Hi Everyone. Just like to say my Mesmer hit 80 a couple days ago and I’ve been very pleased about the results… one thing in particular.

I have a guardian friend that I sometimes play side by side with, who is also 80. Were both specced into power & precision pretty much, except I have some toughness due to the Chaos tree. We were comparing our gear once I bought all my exotics, and I actually noticed that in total I had around 2500 armor.. and I also realised this equated to about 150 more than my Guardian friend…

See, I was not aware that the gap in armor could be bridged that easily. So granted I have as much armor (or a bit less) as a heavy class, what is exactly so ‘squishy’ about a mesmer? on top of their relatively high base health, as you all know they’ve got lots of survivability – evasion, protection, heavy buffs etc.. and yet I still see there are still tons of dungeon groups calling for a warrior or a guardian to be in the party… presumably for their heavy armor. I gather guardians have some excellent party support with AoE protection – but Mesmers can achieve this too with the staff.

I’m probably massively oversimplifying things – and granted in this post I’m only using the one example. But I do have a level 80 Warrior so I’m pretty sure on the extent of what they can do. It would be great to hear your opinions on this.

Thanks Guys!

well the thing is, your friend is specced for power/precision, if you spec your guardian with tanky stats/traits it becomes quite invincible, in exchange i dont thinka mesmer can do the same, i mean, we have no holy trinity here, but there are still some things you will be better at, we mesmer can do a really good job as dps/support wariors and guardians are kinda strong overall, but by going tanky they loose damage power, meanwhile we can do support and still do pretty decent damage if not the same as a full dps build

Memser stil has a lot of damage mitigation passives. Like 9% reduced damage and the idefender + all of the evasion abilities like with the sword.

So a straight up comparison based on stats is like only half the story. I am sure warriors have some nifty damage mitigation abilities themselves.

Yeah, warriors have some mitigation – they got Defy Pain but it’s on a huge 90 sec CD and lasts for 5 seconds, but Mesmers get the effect from evasion – and can do it alot more often than every 90 seconds, depending on what sort of build you use. Other than that I don’t think they’ve got a whole lot of other skills that would directly mitigate damage. I haven’t played my Warrior in a while now though… you’ll have to take my word on that one

I created the topic with the discriminating attitude in mind that some players have towards ‘squishy’ classes. I’ve seen it before in dungeons when people say they ‘need’ a warrior or they ‘need’ a guardian because they don’t already have one… but that’s exactly the kind of thing Guild Wars 2 was trying to get away from. It would be great if I could walk into an instance or join a party without having to worry about this. If only for us Mesmers

From my experience, when a party “needs” something for a dungeon it’s geared towards “what will get this dungeon done t he fastest?”. Your guardians/fighters dish out some good damage, and can generally manage the hard hits the NPC’s deal at the same time.

As for mesmers, or any class, how you build and what you get are generally a tradeoff. Sure you can stack up your armor/toughness, but that will come at the cost of something else. You can average everything out too, creating some balance.

I tank most dungeons on my mesmer…I was floored the other day when I was denied a group because they were specifically looking for a heavy profession to tank a run…

I love this game because a clothy’s stats can look like this…who needs warriors and guardians

One of the reasons I’m guessing people ‘rather’ have per example a guardian, is buffs/squad related skills. Mesmer has some really wonderful skills for party, don’t get me wrong But a lot of people don’t see much benefit in them I’m guessing.

My first dungeon run however consisted out of 3 mesmers, a thief and an elementalist, and we did quite well. Most of the time 2 or 3 mesmers were up, keeping everything busy with clones, almost permanently using feedback on the archers.

I also noticed that my mesmer is quite tough. I put 20 in chaos for the toughness bonus from staff, and notice I can handle myself quite well against multiply mobs, but also against veterans it’s usually a piece of cake.

I gues all we can do to make this attitude dissapear is by showing them what we got

“When we remember that we are all mad.
The mysteries dissapear and life stands explained.”

People who say they “need” a [specify class here] for a dungeon generally don’t know what they are talking about. The build and skill of the player is far more important than the class. Doesn’t mater which class you are, if you build tanky you are going to be tankier than anyone from any class who built themselves out of glass.
