Hey guys, I’m leveling up my Mesmer and I have a question regarding AoE capabilities. My Mesmer is currently only level 23, but I’m experiencing some difficulty when it comes to quickly completing hearts or earning gold on events. My Elementalist, level 25, has no trouble taking down groups of foes. However, since illusions disappear when your target dies, I seem to only be able to fight one enemy at a time when playing my Mesmer. I’m using a greatsword and sword/focus as my weapon set. My strategy has been to use the berserker, then spawn two clones and shatter them. From there I will finish my target off with the sword. This works great for single targets, but if I’m fighting a group of foes, then the others often have half of their health remaining.

Is this an issue due to my lack of experience and skill with the Mesmer, or is it a weakness of the profession? What could I do to improve my AoE capabilities? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should learn how to use the focus pull, which is called “Into the Void”. This replaces Temporal Curtain after you lay it down.

You can position the temporal curtain in front of your foes (about 400-ish range). Once you’ve placed the curtain, cast iWarden. During the iWarden cast channel, destroy the curtain (Into the Void). This will pull all your foes into the center of where the curtain used to be and your iWarden next to them hacking away (AoE). So here’s how it would go:

Cast iBerserker > Swap to Sw/F > Temporal Curtain > iWarden – Into the Void

At this point the mob is balled up together. Now, you can use iLeap/Swap to AoE immobilize the mob you just pulled:

iLeap > Swap > Blurred Frenzy/Mind Wrack at the same time. That will shatter 3 illusions (iBerserker/iWarden/clone from iLeap).

It takes practice to get the curtain/iWarden combo down:

Place curtain down > During casting of iWarden > Into the Void.

I demonstrate the combo numerous times in this video:

For groups, you have a few options. One is to do more or less what you do already, as the zerker and shatters are all aoe, so should hit the whole group.

What I personally do is I use temporal curtain to group the mobs up on a wall, drop the warden, leap/swap and blurred frenzy, swap to drop the zerker and mirror blade, then shatter if necessary. That’ll take out pretty good sizes of groups.

I was having the same issue. I’m sure more experienced people will go further in depth, but I just tab target frequently so not to have all my clone disappear when I kill the first mob. Often times I will even ignore some targets if I have a mob in my face. Sword/Sword is great, but like you I use GS, Sword/Focus most of the time while running around. Focus #5 is great for AoE as is GS #4.

Sword hits multiple enemies, staff bounces between foes for auto, greatsword has 4 attacks for AOE, just about knowing your weapon.

Los line of sight then. Then when they get to you use iwarden plus blurred frenzy. Before you know it they are dread.

I like to spread out my illusions. iZerker on one guy, tab target, iSwordsman on another. Blurred Frenzy the group. This way if one goes down I don’t lose all my illusions. When you shatter it’s aoe so if you bunch em up you’ll hit em all.
