Now that Mesmers have gotten shields with the Chronomancer, we’ve come up against a serious obstacle as the most stylish and fashion-forward of all professions: shields hide your back item while stowed, resulting in a) not being able to see your glorious back item of choice while standing around (and don’t tell me to swap weapons, I don’t want to) and b) weirdness in the combat transition, as your back item appears out of nowhere when you’re in combat stance. Please either let toggled visible back items override the stowed shield, or put a toggle on the slotted shield itself, allowing us to choose whether or not to display it.

I agree the transition looks weird, A shield actually would cover/hide items such as a pack though.

A few of them are small/transparent though, and even if they weren’t, while it would cover the backpiece if you wore it like that… you wouldn’t wear it like that, you’d either keep it on the arm, or, in the case of smaller bucklers, wear it clipped at the belt.

This. Kittening this. I hate how my big kitten wings get hidden behind my shield. Also, when you simply go from stowed to wielded, your backpack does a weird thing of following your shield to your hand for a second and then snapping back to place on your back. Strange, to say the least.

You don’t have to use Shield just because you’re playing Chrono (at least in PvE).

That doesn’t change the fact that the shield hides the backpack.

Except I want to use shield. It’s both fun and really good. I just don’t want it messing up my look.

You could always switch to your other weapon set or constantly run around with your weapons out instead of stowed (a bit of manual labor required). I believe the clipping would be more annoying than the shield covering the back piece, personally.

Back items are aesthetically displeasing, along with shoulder and many headpieces.

That is all.

Just think about how glorious and radiant it will be when you take off that shield, and bam! Your wings comes out and blind the enemy into fashion based submission!

The new legendary backpiece hovers at a distance, and is higher up than normal, possibly reducing/removing the clipping problem. It would be a shame if we couldn’t see it and our shield by the time we manage to get one.

My Sylvari has a top that’s mostly backless so she can show off her glowing marks. Shield totally ruins that.

I’m afraid we’re going to have to “suck it up” because i highly doubt they’ll be changing this.

What about some buckler skins that are stored clipped to the belt instead of on the back?

Mesmer weapons are either casting implements that aren’t used in any physical capacity (staff/greatsword/scepter/focus) or seem based off the typical image of duelist weapons that are easy to carry (sword/sword, sword/pistol), sword/buckler also fits into that theme, it’s just that every single shield skin currently in the game but dreamthistle is huge.

How would you do it? It’s a serious question, as having both on the back would lead to tons of clipping, but carrying the shield on the arm leads to tons of clipping, too.

Rare cases? Every profession with a shield has been using it for years. Guardians (even moreso with Aegis change), Engineers, Warriors, and now Revenants too.

Mesmers getting access doesn’t make this a new or unique issue.

It’s not a problem. What would be a problem would have the shield massively clip the backpack.

Guardians? Using their shields? Shield was garbage since launch up until a month ago, which made shield viable at most
Warrs took them only for Pvp
And honestly on Engis I can’t say anything because I just don’t know.
Rev’s using shields is just as new as Mesemers using them
Fact is this problem didn’t have a very large spectrum up until recently, it just became plenty more problematic because plenty more people are using it.

Guardians were using shield in pvp to bunker since launch. It might feel new because it’s in the Messenger forum, but every other class has long since dealt with it.

The point is they shouldn’t have to “deal with it”. This should never have been an issue in a cosmetic-based game to begin with. Now that other professions getting shields to use has raised the visibility of the problem, it’s time something was done about it.

I DO really want smaller, nicer looking “Bucklers”, but even then having some shields that clip to yer waist and others that don’t… I don’t think any game designer would bother with that, when it’s purely an aesthetics issue that affects a smaller number of their players.

And no, having all shields clip to yer waist would just look odd.

It’s something we want, to be able to use backpiece and shield together, but it’s not really feasible:/ (Aesthetically that is)

As far as toggling to hide your shield… why not toggle to hide all our weaps then…

Clipping is already unavoidable. Have any of you chosen a particular hairstyle for a female character because the longer hair would clip through her weapons?

They’re not really solutions, they just trade an aesthetically problematic mechanic for a gameplay one. Seeing the weapons of someone else is an important aspect of combat.

Seeing their stowed weapon, which is all that is talking about, isn’t. Obviously if the shield is “out”, you’ll see it.

Having the Herald shield on my back instead of wings looks ridiculous when gliding and I’ll not even start on the godkitten weapon draw animation thing. This needs to change ASAP.
