So, our best build?
It’s been a week now since the patch. So what do you feel is our best build right now, and how viable is it in the current meta?
I have been trying a few things myself, among others:
- chrono shatter (dom-duel-chrono)
- core shatter (dom-duel-X)
- mistrust (duel-ill-chrono)
- crusader interrupt (dom-chaos-chrono)
- chronobunker (chaos-insp-chrono)
and I feel like chronobunker is still our best. Chrono and core shatter feel like subpar version of thieves. Mistrust build could do very good damage, but were too glassy and simply outclassed by condi reaper. Crusader interrupt dies too easily to reaper to be the “bruiser” I intended. Only chronobunker seems to hold its grounds.
Note that my analysis is very likely biased because of the very bad unranked team compositions. I often played alongside 4 DPS/roamers, usually at least 1 or 2 thieves, so playing a node-holder and team fight support spec was the best way to “rebalance” the comp. At the end, even in a more thief-rich and DPS-centric meta, the team that can win team fights has an edge.
I’ve found a few builds I like, I’m going to get a lot of hate for this probably but double ranged shatter (power mesmer) has almost always been outclassed which is why I never liked it to begin with.
When they weren’t relying on +1ing, they were thief bait. People can say “condition and bunker builds are so cheap blah blah blah” but when power shatter always loses to both of them I don’t care about what takes “uber skillz” I care about what gets the best results. How many zerker mesmers I’ve seen lose a point because they can’t hold against condi or tankier mesmers.
Leave the +1ing zerker stabbing to thieves, mesmers have unique qualities and inflicting confusion and doing interrupts sound way more mesmer-like than swinging a greatsword, bursting and then leaving.
Paladin chrono “bunker” definitely works, as well as condition builds, of which there are many workable variants in my experience, both core and elite.
This is soloq specific, we shall see in the season finals what actually makes meta for mesmer/chronomancer (if anything at all).
My suspicion is that the best role Mesmer can bring to the coming meta (if anything at all) will be a home point defender. Keeping in mind that whatever this build looks like will need to
- run portal
- be able to ward off a thief
- offer something when rotating to mid (be it condis, utility, etc) before porting back to defend home.
Whatever this build is, it’ll only function in a greater team comp.

Yes.
Suspect high damage and more deaths. So technicaly a single mesmer and maybe one or two team mates could portal back from mid, explode a thief/decapper, and still take the same portal back to mid.
I also suspect a variety in classes in coming team comps, and the best teams might create at least two compositions each (with same classes different builds, or different classes/builds), so that they can “duke” on setup/strategies to outplay their opponents. Expect more class swapping pre match.
Some mesmer builds will be flat out silly in certain matchups, while others might work in one match but not another. There will, however, likely be a ‘best’ “meta” setup, i.e. that build that cover all, or as many bases as it can. I think the portal running “home point defender” is likely the role this build will play.

A Paladin bunker mesmer offers all this. The question is: is it worth taking in your team over a druid? But in soloq, definitely, it would work.

Druid doesn’t have portal.
Highly subjective title there, since “best build” depends on what you’re trying to achieve. From the PoV of a relatively casual player playing mostly PuGs, I am really enjoying the below build the most so far. (And I’ve tried quite a few, both Condie and Power, most always either leave me very susceptible to Thieves or Conditions. I’ve found that none of our utilities alone suffice for Condition clearing in the current meta. Not even 3x Mantra of Resolve, which was what eventually brought me to this build. )
So this build aims to balance sustain and damage output. I like being self-reliant, because in PuGs you generally have to be. I also don’t like unforgiving Power Shatter builds that require godly twitch skills, and often require team coordination just to keep you alive. I hate being Thief bait, and I hate being cheezed by the currently OPd Condition builds of other classes.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it’s pretty unconventional, but I finally found a post-nerf build that I can almost kinda live with. It gives a good mix of damage and sustain IMO.

Note: The Amulet should be Paladin!
From range I can pepper iZerker (plus MW), MS, and AAs with MoPain. For close quarters I have a lot of Condition removal and healing, and active defenses like Shield and BF. Decoy, F4, and Gravity Well provide cover for recharging Mantras which AE heal.
While not a bunker by a long shot, I can hold a point against a single attacker and somewhat contest it against 2.
While not a DPS powerhouse, I feel I make a solid +1er and 1v1er if need be.
I have not run into any Thieves that had an easy time killing me, and more often than not I seem to be able to either kill them or make them run. (Which btw is pretty hard to do, thanks to the MoP. It has the nice habit of killing Thieves that are trying to reset the fight.)
It’s a bit oddball and certainly won’t be meta, but it does deliver a nice balance of damage output & sustain in PuG PvP. I have never run Rune of the Wurm before, but in a Paladin build I’m liking it. It brings my Crit Damage to ~165%, which isn’t too bad. Not sure if that or some other choices are perfectly optimal, but after a LOT of testing I am liking it for now.
I’ve tested other Paladin Power Shatter builds too, but I feel this one brings both more damage output and sustain then most. The Dueling line fits it nicely to boost damage and make the 2 Mantras worthwhile, which are a key element of both the sustain and damage of this build.
I’ve been running these builds (both with mercenary amulets Power, Condi, Vitality, Toughness) or you can switch out the offensive build with a different amulet.

I’m really liking condi mesmer. The pressure they can put out is insane. I think it would be so much better if slow was somehow part of its core mechanic. As well as better access to bleed and cripple.
Also, since the big chronobunker nerfs, I feel like some classes passively out tank mesmer.
(edited by Stand The Wall.6987)
I’ve been using a bruiserish(maybe??) Paladin build. Illusions/Insp/Chrono trait lines; with 2 phantasm summon skills, blink, signet of ether, gravity well, S/Sh and GS, and runes of the wurm. Thanks to the 2 traits in chrono that resummons phantasms and 1 clone for every 2 shattered you can get incredible uptime on illusions. This allows lots of shatter/grav well/continuum split combos as well as good sustain thanks to inspiration. Coupled with mobility from blink its pretty great I’ve found…and its super fun!!! I love the tanky shatter play style!

i know what you mean by tanky, its fun having that much phant/illusion uptime. i manage to have constant alacrity going with a build like this.
but it’s 10x more powerful if you switch the amulet up for a condi one and trait shatter for torment imo, unless you’re up against dh or daredevil, then it’s just a waiting game for their condi cleanse to run out
A somewhat tanky point holding mesmer being the only some what viable soloQ build we have, doesn’t sound far fetched.
If alacrity was not nerfed, I’d be running similar.
Now? meh. I’m not even bothering with PvP.
I can’t validate taking a mesmer of any kind into an organized 5 man.
Nor can I validate it in soloQ.
To me, solo q PvP is already frustrating to some degree.
Having to play boring builds/an inferior in every way build for the class I love, makes that feeling notably worse.
But, I digress.
I don’t think portal is that valuable in team play.
I know, I just shot the sacred cow.
Actually? My ideal line up is looking pretty weak to conditions.
Scrapper/Engi (Doesn’t actually matter to me), Medi Guard, Reaper, Glint/Shiro Rev.
Those all have at least some issue with heavy condi pressure.
A mesmer providing null field & well heal could be useful there.
Although, taking both of those in my opinion makes you an easier thief/2v1 target…
The medi guard could be swapped out for a bunker shout guard for some group condi cleanse. And then the rest is up to whether the team feels they need a dedicated +1 (Daredevil) or more condi cleanse, auras + some damage (Tempest, please don’t kill me for suggesting tempest might actually see some play).
I don’t think the resistance mesmer could give out, would be worth it though.
Resistance is corruptable. :/
So essentially condi cleanse bot. + maybe portal, but I feel like it’ll get wasted a lot.
Portal play was never easy, and it certainly didn’t get easier with thief buffs.

What about hybrid shatter. I’m using this build

MercenaryAmulet. It’s not perfect and I did not try this with all oponents but it gives me quite good survivability, quite sustain damage and some nice tricks for suprising oponents.
@TheOneWhoSighs
When you first wrote that I thought it sounded a bit too negative nancy, but just 3 days later I feel that pretty much everything you say is right on.
I’ve slowly come to realize that it’s bad enough in solo Q that about half the time you get stuck with a bad team (or just much better team on the other side) that has no prayer to beat the team you’re up against, no matter how well you play. However, now add to that the fact that you’re bringing what is easily now a bottom ~20% profession, and thus that ~50/50 win ratio is creeping lower and lower.
I find myself looking at the line ups before the match starts, facepalming when I see my team lacks the Necros, DHs, and to a lesser degree Reavers or Engies that the other team has. Then at some point I realized that everyone else on the team must be doing the same thing, facepalming as they sigh “oh great a Mesmer!”
It’s definitely time to hop onto the bandwagon, or take a break from the game.
i found that chorno bunker and condishatter are the best options atm.
the group composition probably will look like
thief – must +1 rotation
scrapper – must point holder and sustain
necro – good boon rip and sustain
DH – good on point dmg
the fifth class can be revenant or druid and maybe mesmer depands on the enemy composition
portal is not a must again depends on your team and your role and team communication.
bunker mesmer will be eaten by necro boons rip in team fight. thus i think condishatter may be our only viable option (and funny one) although we can burst nicely so the pressure is high.
so maybe home point holder which will need good team to support if being pressure.
for me so far in unranked team or pug the condi shatter shines (low mid lvl)

I’ve been playing planetside 2 again. Being a triple factioning nanite bag. Taking my ESF on all 3 factions to the sky, and kittening people off!
But yeah…
Profession counting has definitely been an issue with me in SoloQ.
I’ve always felt like it would be nice, if they would let me select what my ideal profession layout was, and the system would attempt to match me with that as close as possible.
But alas, with a dwindling player base, and an already clusterkittened rating system, I don’t think that would end well.
My suggestion is either queue with friends/guildies, or play a different game :/.

A friend and I two-queued tonight, winning against a few notable folks such as Caed, Ostrich Eggs, and Noscoc (who was three-queuing) while playing this build (Paladin’s Amulet), but then we lost with Chaith on our team… and he called the rest of us bad.
Anyway, it’s basically a bruiser variant of the Bunker Mesmer build.

Yea, you played with Five Gadget and The Team I pug with was The First Straw.
I said to them over TS, that Velimere is the best mesmer of the two… I don’t remember your mesmer name.
We did win this game because you were not been able to kill the sustain of our group fight… and I was playing bunker support like always.
It was an okay fight, but I felt you could had gave us more difficulties. Your other mesmer soloqing was a dead weight doing nothing. Probably, it would had been harder with a necro or a rev.
Your chrono bunker with some offensive crit sigils seems something I want to try out.
Will give some feedback on it.

I don’t really keep track of character names either to be honest. No worries.
Now that I think about it, wasn’t Impact with you guys in that match too?
It felt like Chaith’s build and mine were the only ones with real sustain. It seems to be a current trend now where people think that just because there are more bruiser amulets in place of bunker amulets that sustained builds are now invalidated, and I see a lot more people over-extending from a two-cap into a three-point play trading their team’s two nodes for the one. It’s like they’re ignoring what they learned from the last meta.
I really like my updated Bruiser Mesmer build, but I also recently tested this Elementalist build (Mercenary’s Amulet) and saw great results over a streak of wins while carrying team-fights, so I’m not sure how much I’ll play my Mesmer when the next season starts.
That said, I’d still appreciate any feedback you can provide.
Yeah paladin bunker definitely works (mentioned that a few posts up in this thread). This is my favorite version for anyone wanting more ideas:
Of course precog haters can go with blink; I know it’s bad post-nerf but I’m still finding it at least a bit useful, at the very least for more alacrity.
Highlights are lots of alacrity/boon sharing, impressive personal uptime on quickness (due to leadership runes) and the typical sustain bunker chronomancers bring to the table.

Chaith’s handle is ‘Five Gauge Chaith’. Five Gadget sounds like an intentional look-alike.
I am not shure if cronomancer is the only way to go.
Does baseline mesmer have a spot?
And did you test a viper + Berserker rune mesmer?
Somethin like this. OK looks wired but actually seems to work…
You maintain 3 illusions out and fight shatter only ocasionaly …
Still thinking which amulet is best. Rampager or sinister can be an option here.

Hmm why not dueling. Unless you shatter whenever you can, the bleeding from illusions is noticeable and they crit a lot and make each clone doing damage. Vigor and clone on doge is also not bad + sword CD that adds to illusions CD. Added more HP and retaliation makes your critters nothing to ignore. This build synergizes quite well.

Are you speaking about the build I write before your comment?
I did tried dueling+mistrust. Interupt+Confusion is not good synergies.
Using Inspirations Chaos Illusions is mainly to use shatter to heal/cleanse/stab/torment/confused people up.
Chrono line is good for shatters, but staff and scepter/sword is enough with the iDefender traits. I did removed 1 trait line for the chrono line on all permutations possible. Chaos, Inspiration, Illusions give me the best sustain / condi pressure and power damage with Mercenary amulet compare to other permutations, I did.

I agree with mercenarys dueling gets weaker.
Not shure if a glass amulet like sinister or viper is useful or you die in 2 seconds…
