[Speculation] If chronomancer gets traps...
I think it would be ranger since their traps are getting reworked.
But, I would like traps to have slow, chill, blinds, confusions or anything.
We have no trap traits. I don’t even know where that speculation came from. It’s either Ranger or Thief spec.
They seem to be spreading out traps and shouts to make those Runes more useable. I think Thief will get the trap build to be honest, I think they’re getting a sniper like specialization and will put heavy use of preparing for fights in advance.
Chronomancer’s I honestly haven’t a clue how it’s going to work. we’ll know how they work this week when they announce the first.
Honestly, I’ve also been thinking traps are likely for Chronomancer. Magical traps, mind you. This is a Elite Spec, so in a sense it’s unlikely for Thieves and Rangers given they already have traps, plus it can fit Chronomancer if you think in terms of AoE fields used for mass control. At the least, if we eliminate Thief and Ranger, Chrono is indeed a suspect to being a trap-based spec.
This is speculation, of course, but I don’t think they’d throw more traps on professions that already have traps.

This would be for the elite chronomancer spec. Any traits for it would be in that line, not the core ones they just showed off. The devs have stated that elite specs would spread around skill types like traps and shouts, which are currently only on a couple professions.
Ranger and thief have enough traps already, so giving them six more would be overkill. Since mesmer has always been a rogue-ish profession, it is a logical choice for a skill type currently belonging to the other two rogues. Lastly, the ability we saw the chronomancer use in the trailer looks very much like a trap, and it would neatly tackle the oft-cited issue of mesmers not being able to fight more than one foe at a time.
Altogether, I’d guess the likelyhood of us getting traps in HoT is pretty high.

It could be a comeback of offensive glamours and the GWEM meta they destroyed a while back or smaller scale of it for PvP (it will shake PvP meta they stated) leaning to it to be AoE condition based.
The Dhuumfire thread
I also can see the chronomancer as a sort of “glamourist” with their etheral fields that twist space and time (slow/quickness & some “wall” or even some enhanced portal, maybe an inverse portal => teleporting enemies to him/herself (there’s already in game mini-boss with that sort of inverse portal, in map 75).
If mesmers get traps, I am gonna pick up trapper rune and PU… even if the stealth duration bonus won’t be applied on trapper rune stealth.
Chronomancy works, I am proof of it. Now stop asking me questions. Time must be preserved!
Just bring back offensive glamours some how at least roaming squad scale.
The Dhuumfire thread
If the Chronomancer fields are traps that’s basically just a big “screw you!” to glamours.
I don’t think they’d do that.
(More than they have in the past, I mean.)
Yeah, I’d honestly be really surprised if Chrono is a trap spec. We have no traps anywhere else in the class, so they’d basically be adding a new specialisation that has zero synergy with anything else about Mesmer.
Trap spec as a Thief thing makes more sense, since they already have some Trap utilities that the new spec could tie into.
Tanya Larina – Human Thief
Finchy Whyte – Sylvari Ranger
The new Trap utilities won’t go to Thieves or Rangers. I really don’t get why people keep mentioning it. Those classes already got Traps. Specializations will bring new utilities. There is no point in providing a class with two full sets of Traps.
This leaves Traps for:
- Engineers
- Guardians
- Warriors
- Elementalists
- Mesmers
- Necromancers
- Revenants
Now, we don’t really have a clue which class is going to get it. So this is just an educated guess. When looking at Runes of the Trapper… I really hope that Warriors will never ever gain such an access to stealth. It would be ridiciulous. I think we can also savely rule out Guardians due to thematic reasons (plus they got Symbols and Consecrations) and Engineers (Bombs, bombs, bombs. And Turrets.).
This leaves us with Elementalists, Mesmers, Necromancers and Revenants.
- Mesmers already got access to stealth so introducing Runes of the Trapper to them would cause less balancing issues. This might sound silly but is a quite significant consideration. They also no longer have any offensice area effects (Chaos Storm and MoD aside) which makes them a good candidate.
- Elementalists will be Tempests. Traps could be suitable ‘stormy’ area effects. Why not? I also feel that stealth for Elementalists will be less problematic than for Warriors since they are squishier and rely on more active defensive/recovery mechanics. They also lack area effect utilities like Glamours or Wells.
- Necromancers fit the theme of stealth quite well. However, I really don’t have a clue what kind of niches Traps would fill here since they already have Marks and Wells.
- Revenant… who knows?
I’d say that Mesmers (Chronomancers) have a very good chance at getting Traps. As long as there is some form of CC on Traps (preferably Dazes and Blinds) we will have plenty of synergies within our existing trait lines. The thing shown in the HoT also looks very trappy. However, this could also be our new class mechanic (area effects triggered per ‘shatter’… at least the animation could imply it).
I guess we will have certainty soon. I’m really praying for the latter since this would be a cool twist to our class mechanic and would perfectly work with existing shatter traits. Plus I’d hate Traps forever because they would be the reason for Glamours being stripped of half of their original design.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it after answering on the thread. I wouldn’t be surprised that shatter becomes AoE traps that can be activated. That would help us in the AoE departement.
/hype intensifies.
