Staff mesmer for general play
Staff is a passive aggressive, primarily defensive weapon. It’s never really the core of a mesmer build, but suplements as a secondary weapon generaly for kiting/defence. It can be used in a condi build (rabid your best stat) or power (gives a full zerk shatter mes a means to survive, for example, plus good clone production). So yeah, its not really good for offensive application (though it can hit hard, don’t get me wrong). If you want to kill trash mobs and be a casual player, there are other weapons you should be taking for various reasons.

I appreciate the input but I feel like if I gear moderately well enough a staff would be just fine. I mostly intend to just get some map completion done and play the story.
Thanks for the rabid gear suggestion though, for sure. Definitely looks like I would get the most bang for my buck if I stuck to condition damage – doubling power does little to improve any of the damage output (125 to 255 damage, or condition damage improves ticks from around 200 to 1000). Maybe it will be usable…just maybe.

Map completion and other PvE on mesmer can be irritating at the best of times. Using a staff will make that go from irritating to incredibly aggravating.
You can do it, but we all strongly advise you against it.

I suppose…I wonder if elementalist would be any better off with staff – my Asura can’t seem to get a staff that’s worth a visual kitten .

For what you’re after a staff ele would be 20 times better (That’s not even an exaggerated number)
Mellowpuff [Champion Hunter]
If you’re soloing Champions, though, Staff + Deceptive Evasion will be your best friends… although you don’t get DE until super late and Staff doesn’t stunbreak anymore…
staff isnt a bad weapon specially if you can get even a little condition damage behind it.
no you dont need full condition gear to max it to make it hit hard
no it doesnt instantly do 2k dmg from its auto attack
its a slow wind up weapon that supplies better defense and sustained pressure and damage in mid/close range fights than a GS can.
I use staff over 80% of the time on my mesmer and it hasnt really ever presented an issue in any game mode for me.
I’d suggest you just experiment with it on your own in various situations rather than approaching the forums where Meta is most important and Min/Max is the only thing you should do..
also staff still half stun-breaks with 2 and 4 (can use while stunned/cd’ed)

Watch Mr Prometheus’ staff mesmer guide for an idea of what you’re looking at. It’s old, traits have changed, probably skills and maybe gear too. But it’ll show you what it’s like to play. Basically, you need to enjoy kiting.
Chaos armor could be better =/

You don’t just have one weapon set. You are severely limiting your character if you think of yourself as a “Staff Mesmer.”
That’s true in all game types, IMO.

Tell that to Greatsword Mesmers…
Staff is a good PvP weapon and you can use it to do story instances many levels above you (lets you kite forever). It, however, is subpar for general PvE due to its low damage.
Its phantasm has good damage in grouped situations when people spam conditions on bosses. The chaos field + leap plus skill 4 itself can upkeep Chaos Armor for some time, which can be useful for keeping you alive. Paired with DE, you can pretty much solo any champion except the Krait witches.
Don’t expect the autoattack to be of any use though. Basically the idea behind Staff is to keep everything away at you until it eventually dies. Nor is it particularly fast or anything. You’re still going to be relying on mainhand Sword for killing anything that isn’t capable of oneshotting you.
