Hi guys going to make a mesmer now, I got no idea how to use them nor how they are so I need your help.

I will mainly focus on WvW and need a decent build.
I like DPS and utility (I mean deal damage in zergs and 1 v 1’s and still help out the team besides the damage output)

Any suggestions?
Mesmer seems really fun!

If you haven’t even started the char it’ll be a while before you need a build. Just go level and get a feel for how things work, first five points put in illusions, doesn’t make much difference after that until you get to 40 or 60 or 80 and actually have enough traits to put together a build. You can level with pretty much anything

I think the best build for taking on zergs in wvw is confusion glamour build unless something has changed recently that I’m unaware of.

Here’s a link to a thread with builds pertaining to that:

It’s basically using your utilities (glamour skills) against the zerg so they dmg themselves, and you also help your team out by reflecting projectiles and dazing opponents etc.

You can’t even start to do a glamour build until you can unlock your second tier of traits.

just a question.
Should I stack 3 mesmer clones and then send them to confuse the enemies or just everytime I got 1?

Generally you’d prefer to shatter with 3 illusions up due to the way that shatters scale, but it’s not that easy. Playing as a mesmer requires awareness and good judgement on the fly- you have to decide when you should shatter your illusions based on the situation, and which shatter to use. Things to consider:

-Do you have phantasms up? Phantams can deal quite a bit of dps, so shattering them in a non-condition based build can actually make you deal less damage.
-What traits do you have? On-death traits don’t activate when you shatter.
-Do you have enough clone/phantasm generation to be able to use shatters on recharge? If not, you may need to save that 1 clone for an emergency Distortion.
-Are your illusions all cast on a single target? If so, you definitely want to shatter them before the target dies, since the illusions will disappear anyways.

There are more things to consider, but you have to think about the situation and be able to decide what is most beneficial yourself, because every situation will be different. This is part of what makes a mesmer difficult (and fun) to play- every situation has a different “optimal” solution, so you have to think as you play.

You’ll get an idea of what’s best through experience and taking the time to learn from specific situations you come across.

Mesmers are one of those wonky classes that no one can really tell you how to play. You honestly need to go through the leveling process to develop your playstyle and find the weapons that you are able survive best with. Once you have that then you can start to look at builds… and there are so many great guides for builds on this forum and people to help if you have questions. Welcome to the mesmer family.

Congrats on starting a mesmer! I love this class and you will too. My biggest suggestion is to stick with it through the leveling. There’s a dip in viability and dps around 25-35 that causes most players stop leveling. Don’t. Mesmers rely on their traits more than any other class. Most of our power comes from our traits. Hang in there till 40, then it gets good. I’d use GS/Staff for leveling. Then, give up GS when you hit 80. The first build I had a ton of fun with in WvW was Chaos Maestro. It seems more like a support class on paper, and it is, but it has great survivability and utility.

There are a ton of viable builds tho, and you’ll have a blast playing around with all of them. Good luck!

The big thing to remember is we are specialists, we don’t have any one build fits all situations. The build you use in WvW zergs won’t be very effective at roaming with a small group or solo, and vice versa. Builds that shine in dungeons aren’t always the best open world builds. Now some roaming builds do translate well to sPvP but you have to compensate for whatever the food was covering in WvW. I have currently 3 builds that I use on my mesmer. One for open world PvE, one for Dungeons and one for WvW roaming. I generally avoid zergs, but if I did, I would need another build for that.
