Q:

I’m curious, i was following a discussion in /map and (as always) everyone had his own opinion about this.

Some were saying that taking money for transporting people with mesmer portal is against rules and so it’s bannable. Is it true..? Some instead were saying that is only forbitten to ask for money, not to receive it as a free donation. I can go on posting other’s opinions but i think my question is clear now

Thanks!

And no, it’s not against the rules, it’s just incredibly pathetic. Especially considering how close knit the community is, charging people for portal use will only get you higher on a list of “People to avoid.”

People seem to forget (ok, ANet doesn’t really shine in that regard) that this still is an RPG. ANet doesn’t even really intervene in cases of scamming, except for rare cases. Simply because it’s your decision to trust somebody instead of using the TP, or in this case use a portal instead of doing the JP yourself. So no, it’s perfectly fine. Unless you mean real money :p

It’s a free market economy. I have no more problem with a Mesmer charging for portals than I do with a weaponsmith charging to craft 250 sword blades.

In both cases if someone doesn’t like they don’t have to use the portal. They could (“gasp”) do the jumping puzzle themselves.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

I do the jumping puzzles in Lions Arch and I announce a port to the end. Although they aren’t that difficult to do I still offer. Some will send me mail with some silver attached. Way I see it, if they have the coin and willing give you some, hey, I won’t complain.

I wouldn’t charge for portals, but I certainly won’t object to taking any donations that come my way.

I’ve taken a few portals for JPs before, and no one has ever asked for money. but I’ve sent them a few silver as a tip. I dont know why someone would stand at the end of a jumping puzzle advertising portals on map chat and dropping them every 5—10 minutes if they didnt expect a few donations. It is considered gauche to demand them, though….it’s also probably kind of rude to hop a portal and not donate anything.

along those lines, I’ve been thinking about wvw…should we be tipping good commanders? they’re running around leading us, using their own siege blueprints…isnt a tip in order?

I usually give 5-15 sliver when I get portaled up depends on my mood that day, and when I do the portal job myself I do take donations, but I dont ask for portal fee, I dont know why I dont ask for it but it is like everyone’s agreement that take donations/tips feel like the best way.

Before these posts it never even occurred to me to tip a mesmer at a jumping portal. Usually I just say “thanks .”

I’ve honestly never seen a mesmer say you have to pay them for the portal……honestly it’s pretty kitten hard to force payment from everyone, even without another mesmer such as myself coming in and ruining it for you.

At most, I’ll see mesmers (including myself) saying donations are appreciated, but nothing beyond that.

…..no, no it really won’t. The community isn’t THAT close knit.

I don’t charge for portals and always return any tips i’m given.
It might just be me, but I like to pass on the idea that mesmers are a bunch of cool guys.

No. There’s nothing forbidden about it.

Do keep in mind that it’s also not against the rules for them to say “yes”, then run away after being ported… Likewise I wouldn’t advise anyone to pay before being ported… It’s a risk you’re both taking.

Nothing forbidden but from my experience on my mes – I get quite a lot of pleasure from offering a free portal in map chat.. These moments arent worth coin.. The appreciation from fellow players is worth more than a few gold. If i want gold I’ll just run fracts or lol’cof a few times.

Yep.

I have given back up to half of an offering, just because I felt like the guy gave me too much for the service; but otherwise I just accept it gratefully and move on.
