The coolest class with the lamest graphic
That just doesn’t have a place in my game.
Hehe your game hehe.
Nukeyak, you are an erotic man…
Only 2 reasons why this an issue
Reason 1: Op doesn’t like butterflies..But what kind of person doesn’t like butterflies, wonderfully enough, reason 2 provides a possible answer but first…
Butterflies represent the very nature of a Mesmer….OP keeps asking for why they are in the game, there you go chap..
‘I appear to be what I am not’ – Direct quote from Cederic, a butterfly I met -
Actually it’s a Lyric from the a song called, wait for it – ‘The Pretender’ – I feel like I’m pwning the universe right now…
In short, if you don’t like butterflies, you don’t like the Mesmer, considering they are, one in the same…
Other posters have already gave solid reasons for the butterflies, I don’t need to repeat them….
Option 2: You’re insecure with your sexuality and somehow believe the butterflies undermine your sense of….manliness???
‘I had testicles, but then I liked the butterflies, and well, they fell off and in their place, well……’
Now of course I’m not saying you are insecure, that would be foolish, I could be wrong, and I don’t like being wrong, I’m a mesmer, tact is key…
You could choose reason 1 if you don’t like reason 2 – Which leaves us with the following conclusion…
Why would ANet change the design of a class that is so wonderfully unique and conceptualized due to one arrogant individual who can’t reason beyond circular logic????
I’ll leave you this…
Grandiloquence as you’re so fond of, as has already been pointed out by other posters is in most cases, a sign of pretense….
Pretense and insecurity go hand in hand, in fact, they don’t leave home together……
Profound knowledge, delivered without the pretense of verbal ponce, of course, the irony is that my delivery is both condescending and pretentious going someway to rendering said profound wisdom, moot…Hoisted by my own petard and what not….
Why would I write a post that seemingly in it’s essence, undermines it’s very purpose…?
Perhaps, in very Mesmer fashion, I played with the art of distraction to maneuver a Mirror where I wanted it to be…..
‘I seem to be, what I am not’
Chucked some butterflies in your face….I hope the hairs on chest didn’t fall off…..
De gustibus non est disputandum. But I absolutely LOVE the graphics darling …

I think he is disguised thief.
It’s people like this that drive up the price of red and black dye.
The butterfly has been a symbol of the Mesmer since the GW1. As has the color scheme. Heck, if anything GW1 Mesmer attacks were less purple, and more pink!
I’m a guy. Last time I looked I was straight, not that it matters. My masculinity isn’t affected by some colors and a flying insect. A real man shows the world he is one by his actions.
Wow you guys have gone off the deep end. Comfortable with your own sexuality? Arguments defending your masculinity? And yet you give those of us who don’t care for the butterflies crap over it just being a video game. Err… okay.
Anyways, depending on how much I liked the game at the time and how much it was, I’d probably consider paying for alternate spell effects. That’s actually kind of a neat idea and would be an interesting addition to the gem shop.
Oh, and it was brought up earlier, but I don’t know if it was directed at my comments on the very dark nature of the class… but i’m not looking for black clothes and eyeliner or “Necro Lite” but you gotta admit… this is not a goody two shoes class. This is class that specializes in breaking people’s minds. That’s pretty evil. Once again, though, I’m not looking for black and dark effects. I’m just not at all fond of the butterflies but it ends there. I like the class for what it is and that’s why I play it.
i got bored at mesmer at 80 level suddenly. and i made necromancer. lame.
Didn’t care for the butterflies at first but I kinda got used to them. In fact, I think mesmers should have a short blink animation with their dodges, including the butterflies. It’s not fair that the thief has his shadow step dodge.

While correct, it’d be bad for PvP I fear. It’s already very difficult to tell what effect is what. If every class had 2-3 variations of the effects… ugh.
Good point. I was thinking aesthetics and not WvW/sPvP tactics at the time.
I think the butterflies are more of a lavender color, really. And I think they’re great.
The motif is perfect for an illusionist class — though I’m never against options for anyone who wants them, if there’s a practical way to implement them.
Considering how big ArenaNet’s to-do list is, however, especially for the Mesmer (fewer broken traits would be nice), along with the obvious popularity of the butterflies, I wouldn’t suggest anyone hold their breath waiting for a change.

What mesmer is missing is a melon hat.

You make an interesting point! Yes, the Mesmer is one of the more sinister professions. But the whole beauty bit is also a keystone in their design whether you think it fits or not. I think it does, if you take note of certain conspiracy theories revolving around the entertainment industry and the government.
Personally, I think the Mesmer’s animation graphics are a loose allusion to Monarch mind control. The shattered glass effect seems symbolic of the shattered personality victims have once they ‘break free’ from programming ,or in the Mesmer’s case, once they release their victims from their own grasp. It’s all theoretical of course! My own interpretation.
It’s also worth noting that the ancient Greek word for butterfly is Psyche, as in Psychology, Psychosis, Psychoanalysis, see the trend? I think this reference is more believable as opposed to my theory above, as anything with the Psych- prefix has something to do with the mind. Personally, I dig the butterflies. It’s a bold move for sure, but without them I fear the Mesmer wouldn’t have that extra ‘oomph’.

Somebody is insecure and unaware of all the reasons as to why mesmers have butterflies. OP’s opinion is either entirely uninformed (or they just don’t care because butterflies make them angry), they are a troll, or they are simply the most nitpicky person on earth. The animations are set, so people should maybe figure this out before they get far into a character, only to take issue to the purple butterflies that have always been a part of the mesmer. MMOs don’t just up and allow editing of animations, and they never have.
Sorry for the necro.
Yesterday in WvW, I got jumped by both a max-height norn guardian and a charr warrior at the same time. They were both huge and manly, wielding big jagged exotic greatswords and heavy armor. They probably had names like Pwns Facemelter and X Assassin X.
I killed them both.
How did I do it?
With pink butterfly magic. That’s how.

Yeah I’ve no problem with the imagry of the class.
It’s like people making fun of a brony, they don’t care. Except in a Mesmer’s case, they really don’t care cause they can trick anyone into an early grave.
This thread is a troll-magnet, through and through. From both sides of the fence; masculinity/gamer/hard case vs. distorted perception of reality/defense of what society deems “feminine”/general opposition of a simplistic view. Quite hilarious, actually. I got a good read, plenty of drama for my day, and lost a few calories laughing. Surely, I’m not alone on that.
That said, here’s the bottom line: who cares? Isn’t everything on any topic relative to one’s own opinion? So what if there are not simply 2 sides. Maybe there are 20, perhaps 200. No one party here is “right” or “wrong” for their way of viewing the content they wish to see in-game. No amount of kittening, whining, trolling, “fact-producing”, or otherwise useless exercises will change that fact. OP clearly stated the intent, and the masses agree that answers to his questions were given. Hell, even my reply right now is moot, since it’s an open and shut case already.
The 2 most common responses are both undeniably real and fair: you either love and embrace what currently is, and for the reasons (whether they elude you or not [pun intended])…OR: you’d have liked to see a different motif/cholorscheme/effect used. In the end, a few have stated already, it doesn’t matter; ArenaNet won’t be changing it. We could all unanimously poll, vote, and even go as far as to quit playing – it still won’t change. Why? Obvious: you already paid for the game AND service. You’ve made a non-refundable investment (and quite a small one in reality) into something that took more time, imagination, money, and motivation than anyone in this thread would ever be able to muster. I don’t care what your education background (or foreground) is.
I say kudos to AN for making something that in a big way has caused MMOs to re-emerge into the scene . People like myself, who rage-quit WoW because it became “nerf this” and “buff that” every other kittened week. Now, I’m playing a game that rarely changes in ways that adversely affect either my playstyle or my goals for the game itself. That pleases me.
So who really gives a rat’s kitten if something as trivial as an animation you almost never have time to sit and stare at anyway is being used?
I rolled mesmer solely because of the butterflies. Then i actually played the class and fell in love for the rest of its kick kitten nature.
Personally the whole pink/purple fluff and butterflies is one of the main things that attracts me to the class.
There’s plenty of kitten professions out there so this feels nice.
Also reasons to why it fits are plenty and have been named more than enough.
Eitherway the whole fragile/elegant/alluring/chaos themes work for perfectly it.
Now if they could just update the graphics on the phantasms … those look a bit uninspired and off.
If they atleast looked seriously more etheral with more light effects instead of just a transparent pink :/ … Counters and sword 3 skill also look dull and sound dull…an updated animation and sound effect would not hurt.
What we all think of purple or butterflies is our own perception right.
Does this mean that even outside of the game the Mesmer class is playing with your mind
After all, a butterfly and some colour can cause such interesting reactions (“Lamest graphic”)
In psyc, Purple is associated with certain mental conditions, predominantly OCD, and general obsession, which is rather fitting to a class that causes so much mental anguish. And of course so many of our ink blocks look like butterflies
Butterflies are one of the few natural polymorphs in the real world with 4 different states of being always changing? sounds like a Mesmer. There are multiple butterfly varieties that are classified as Mimics, varieties that can change their look based on seasons, one I personally like is that the adult butterfly is known as a “imago”
Mago being latin for Mage, and the I infront of it…. coincidence??
"i"mago it is
Defences of butterflies include :
Bright colours (blindness? )
camouflage (our invisibility options)
Eyespots and tails to “divert” attention of predators (sounds like a mesmer)
You’re just not going to get me to agree that imagery typically targeted at 8 year old girls shopping at the mall is at all cool looking no matter how you try to spin it.
Mothra.
here’s a butterfly fact you probably don’t know:
there are some species of butterfly that feed on TEARS, their proboscis is shaped like a needle like a mosquito’s mouth, and covered in thorns, it waits until its victim is asleep, and then stabs them in the eye, the thorns cause irritation and make the eye produce more tears.
so yeah, butterflies: THEY FEED ON YOUR PAIN!
for male mesmers, I think the butterflies fit pretty well, we’re pretty much weaponized stage magicians, and so it would be either doves or butterflies, and doves are hard to make.
there are also the chaos theory and butterfly effect references as well for the more… lovecraftian mesmers (kittening with space time, mentally tormenting people until their minds become mush, teleporting into a world made of glitched level geometry from which there is no escape, the usual stuff :P)
ia! ia! Bubbles ftaghn!
edit: and as our class icon shows, it has ties into our masquerade theme as well

I came for the butterflies. I was not disappointed
