Q:
The illusion-phantasm sindrome.
If you dont like illusions or phantasms I dont think mesmers is a path for you. You can run without them but it will limit your range of builds to run.
The low hp on a mesmer is countered with active defences, you have to activly protect yourself with stealth, blocks, chaos armor, blurred frenzy, F4 (whatever its called), phase retreat, blink etc. As you can see the defensive capabilites with a mesmer are quite many and adding a large haelthpool to that would be nice but all the other kids would freak out and kill Anet.
As with dmg, it isnt INSTANT as when you swing a sword. As a mesmer you prepare your attack and then burst it either with blowing up your illusions, syncing with your phantasms or slamming conditions all over the place. This need practice, a lot and isnt easy to pull off. Thats also what makes us strong, it can be hard to predict our burst and one of the most annoying professions to meet. I really HATE fighting mesmers, they’re all over the place and then you’re dead all of a sudden.
AOE dmg is not our best friend clones and phantasms die instantly, maybe thats why a lot of mesmers seem to be roaming more than zerging.
Dont know if that helped you, I only do roaming in wvwvw so I cant really tell about support capabilities.
Your question in the top isnt really a question..
Basically my question supposed to be something, that you almost awnsered.
I wanted to know, if Mesmer can still be a good pick for me if i overlook the Illusion and Phantasm Cons.
But not sure if it is, since you assured me, the problems i had with playing Mesmer are still the same and they are real.
So right now i am still struggling to make a good class pick. Sadly Warrior and Guardian is only in my second tier of choices, but with mesmer sorted there is nothing left to do.
My pros on Warrior
-Are mostly based on the look of his gear (since it can use a lot of weapons including rifles, and shields that are my fav weapons.)
-Its tough
My cons are
-That its basically melee and this game is totalyl not melee friendly. (you can go range but its not really detailed, on this class, and is boring spam dmg skills all the time)
-Its a generally boring class to play,
-There are a LOT of other Warriors.
And the list is almost the same with Guardian, trough it can not use rifles or longbows (lack of range) but is more tough and has a lot of utility and support skills, that is a really good thing.
So i am REALLY not sure what to play anymore :P
I’m new to the game so I don’t have a ton of experience, but there are builds that work mostly based on damage done by illusions, and other builds where the damage is done in other ways with the illusions mostly a distraction. But they pretty much all use illusions — it’s what the class is about.
You’re not quite correct about all illusions being slow to get into combat and requiring flat ground and so forth. There are illusions that spawn right on top of enemies, and ones that do ranged damage.
My suggestion would be to do some PvPing against some mesmers, or even spectate some in one of the dueling arenas.
You should level up a Mesmer to 80 even if you decide you don’t like it. From a lot of your comments, you really don’t know the class very well. For example, a mesmer can melee as good as any other class can.
Level it to 80 and decide for yourself. No one else can decide for you if you like it or not. Besides, even if you don’t like it you come away with a better understanding of the class and how to beat it. You can then just keep it as a bank alt.

I agree with Xavi, you should really level up your mesmer before deciding.
But have you looked at Engineer? I got a lvl50 engineer I level when I get bored with my mesmer, there you can use rifle, pistol/pistol, pistol/shield and medium armor that can look a bit more “hard” than clothes. All the kits can be confusing at start but the profession seem to have possibility for many different builds. They are very fun to play too and dual pistols look pretty awesome
syndrome not sindrome.
it seems to me that youre just being picky over classes.
If you really got into the nature of a mesmer they can literally take down any class if played right.
I love mesmer personally, but also have good fun on my engineer as well.
and if you’re just being picky on kit swapping- which can actually give you perma speed and vigor then maybe stick to the simplicity of a warrior or spam of a thief.
@OP
I have both Mes and Engie at 80 and I like each in different ways. Depending on what you want to do, they are really quite different classes to play.
Mes-
- more single targeted burst dps, although sword/focus CAN work with cleave and iWarden.
- lots of utility
- phantasms are like disposable turrets (esp iDuelist) on a much lower spawn CD, so you can use them and be more mobile. most of them follow the enemy if they move out of range (except warden)
- lots of escapes, both skills like decoy and your own skill at using clones to distract enemies.
- slowest class, but there are ways around that (runes)
- my preferred PVE build – phantasm build sc/pistol – sw/sw
Engie –
- more AOE centered sustained dps.
- similar utility (in different ways)
- Turrets are stationary and I’m not a big fan of the dynamic (long CDs)
- potions and gadgets for fun for buffs and escapes
- speedy kits feels like rowing… even set up kits to Q and E to alternate kits.
- my preferred build – FT/EG – Yes, I know its ‘nades or nuthin’, but.. meh. FT is more fun :P. though nades underwater is also quite fun
Truth be told, I really like both. I have a warrior too and yes, I realize its more powerful, but both mes and engie are more fun for me to play… I get where you are coming from with the thief. Try the engie. See if you like it… experiment with different kits to see how you like the way they play. Check out the “Dec patch notes” for each class to see if anything is changing that you care about.
They had to SPAWN MORE OVERFLOWS!
