Thief Sword >>>> Mesmer Sword
Mesmer’s Blurred Frenzy feels like a really bad Pistol Whip. I mean, not only does Whip do more damage, but it also has a stun, and best of all, no cooldown! I try to forget Thief Sword exists whenever I use Sword on my Mesmer.
Thief sword probably should be a little better than mesmer sword, seeing as thieves usually stay in one weapon set all the time (unless they are running one of those weird dueling specs), where as mesmers swap and have other tricks up their sleave.
I love Mesmer sword though. Only Mesmer weapon I like more is staff.
Blurred frenzy might do less damage, but with an iZerker and iWarden spinning wildly at the same time theres really no comparison (or hope) for the thief.
As for dazes/stuns, yeah we have those too.
stop comparing proffessions pls
I don’t get the point of this thread, but to humor you, pistol whip also has a long starting animation and a non-negligible ending animation, during which you’re completely rooted and open to counterplay.
In all honesty, I would trade the stun of pistol whip for the faster and smoother blurred frenzy animation.

Scenario:
You are actually fighting a real fight, and not 1v1. People are shooting at you from all directions. You hit Pistol whip. You are dead. You hit Blurred Frenzy. You are dead 2 seconds later. Both are meh, but one works a lot better.
(point being: 1v1 is the most senseless way to compare abilities, at the very least use 5v5 scenarios where locking yourself into pistol whip paints a target marker over your head)
Pistol Whip is nothing compared to the damage the Thief sword auto-attack can do alone. For a cleave weapon, I’m always surprised by how much damage I can do on my sword Thief by simply auto-attacking. But oh well.
I’d still like to see Blurred Frenzy activate quicker.
Thief >>>> Mesmer
Working as intended.
Thief Sword rips boons now?
The two shouldn’t be compared, although I do wish our Ileap worked like there Infiltrators Strike.
Mellowpuff [Champion Hunter]
The thief sword skill you’re thinking of comes from S/P, and would rarely (if ever) be used in a pvp scenario. It’s too easy to avoid, and too unreliable under circumstances. It’s purely a pve set. 90% of the time, a thief will choose s/d for pvp. Where as mesmer sword is strong for both pvp and pve.
@ oxtred: thief s/d does rip boons, yes, and it always has.

If I recall correctly the second phase of pistol whip also has evade frame, though it is shorter and the first stun phase is still vulnerable. Capable thief can still dodge like mesmer after pistol whip ended, or shadowstep out of the way.
Regarding no CD argument…why would you even bring core mechanics into weapon comparison ?_?

To be fair, sword is the only weapon Mesmer’s have for PvE.
Much like focus Mesmer sword is a total shadow of what it once was. Quite possibly the most heavily nerfed weapon in the game.

It makes me sad to remember what sword/focus was – arguably our best weapon set, now arguably one of the least useful (Edit: of course I’m NOT talking about pve).
Even more annoying because sword/focus always required some skill to use – not like scepter/torch, greatsword and staff.
The worst thing about the Sword/Focus nerfs is that it jut feels so clunky now. In previous versions of those weapons, they felt so smooth and polished; you could tell that a lot of work went into making them just feel good… but now it almost feels like we’re dealing with some unpolished alpha versions of GW2 weapons or something.
Like seriously, a stiff breeze will just suddenly remove your ability to use the Sword3 leap, when before the location to teleport to was remained until the duration expired. Blurred Frenzy nerfs ok fine I guess. Focus4 nerfs, putting you into combat… now this is where it feels really clunky, where before it felt so incredibly smooth (even after the applying condition=combat nerf, you could still use “Into the Void” before some random rabbit stepped on it).
GW2 Mesmer balance, one of the few cases where the longer the game’s been out, the more polish is scraped off, when you would expect polish to be added over time.
At least iWarden actually works most the time now, after almost a year of it being horribly broken.
