Alright here is the deal I really like both those classes but I am having trouble picking one for a main. I was wandering if I could here from veteran player reasons for me to pick a mesmer or thief. I honestly cannot just make up my mind.

That really depends on your playstyle. I suggest to create both and test them in spvp to see which profession fits your interest.

if you want to melee pick thief if you want more ranged fighting pick mesmer. I think thief is a better class at noob to mid skill level, mesmer is better at mid to high skill level and thief is better at the very top end. I have both and ended up with mesmer because I don’t like melee play style.

What type of content are you planning on primarily doing? That greatly influences the answer that I’d give. Both classes have pros and cons, so how you plan on using them is what matters most.

I don’t agree with this, I play melee on my mesmer.

I had the same problem, in the end I went with the mesmer because its kittening awesome.

Out of a Mesmer and a Thief at the same skill level, the Mesmer will win 1v1.. until the Thief realises he can’t win and runs away with super high mobility and seemingly endless stealths.

Not if it’s a condi thief (eg P/D).

/edit @OP: Both classes are great for trolling opponents. Mesmers can spent a great deal of a fight with kiting and mitigating damage while the illusions put further pressure. The downside: Mesmers are SLOW, horribly slow. I reactivated my thief for this matchup and there are worlds apart between thief mobility and mesmer mobility.

ive had this very same problem for about three months, almost walked away from both and picked up ranger. Honestly im leaning towards my thief because mesmer nerfs make me sad and apparently I suck with them in WVW and PVP

Well I would really like to play all aspects of the game. WvW, Dungeons, and maybe eventually try the higher end PvP. Although since I do not have a lot of time on my hands the majority of my PvP will most likely be WvW, but I would love to try some of the other forms as well.

Both classes are excellent at spvp, however, if you want to solo roam in wvw then take a thief, but if you plan on doing a lot of dungeons and if you have a good group of friends to capture camps in wvw with (like a group of 5-10) then I’d probably go with mesmer again.
Btw, I was in the same dilemma as you are, the deciding factor for me is that i wanted to be kinda supportish do that i could play with my friends, so I went mesmer.

I have both at 80 ( the only two at 80 ) and tbh I like both, out of combat thief is much more mobile but in combat the Mesmer and theif both take the crown depending on builds and weapon sets.

The Mesmer is very fun and very good at roaming solo or on small groups I can’t take camps at the same speed with my Mesmer and thief the only thing thief can have above the mes is the mobility to escape but again depends on builds mesmers can get stealth we can target ambient animals to escape via staff #2 then blink and stealth etc etc.

Honestly there’s not much in it, thief is the easiest to use as a solo roamed due to stealth access but thiefs if fought go down very fast more than any other class, the difference and here comes the skill ceiling when a thief can and does predict a lot he becomes a very tough foe to catch however the majority u see sent that good there just on the bandwagon for roaming.

As for Mesmer and the skill ceiling it is high for sure but not as high as our community makes out 90% of the time the thing top mesmers have above every other player is there positioning same with most other classes however I still think the Mesmer has the most diverse builds.

I love both classes but Mesmer edges it as I find it more interesting and suits me more though I am playing my thief more lately as he is a new 80.

Pve… I think all classes are good thief has a ton of blast finishers which are awesome and to be honest I think is more challenging in Pve than most classes simply due to how squishy they are mesmers are common place a lot but you can tell the good from the bad however there is a much bigger gap for thiefs especially in fractals and when you start to get to high level fractals a good thief can put dps most with the most dodges etc the best add killer by far and add support into that too.

Mesmer I would say is much harder in PVx and thief harder in high Lvl Pve and as for spvp well there both easy for Tpvp however mesmers are not desired too much at the moment and thiefs have a love hate relationship but prettying pigeon hold into a sword and dagger build and it’s variants.

Take your pick there completely different what do you prefer though more melee or more ranged? Both classes can do both a bit but yeh.

Depends on builds, but 9/10 times a thief will kill a mesmer.

Thieves are very specialised, they do some things exceptionally, and can’t do other things at all (They are very poor dungeoneers)
