Thief how to win..
ahahahah a mesmer complaining about thieves.
Nice one! hilarious! tks for the laugh!!
Thieves hate confusion and torment. It can kill them pretty quickly.
Thieves are generally pretty easy for an experienced Mesmer. Could you perhaps give more specifics of what you find difficult with them?
lol sounds like you just need more practice with the class.
Depends on ur spec but for shatter mesmers in general a thief will beat you 1v1 the majority of the time unless you completely outplay him/her or he sucks/screws up. D/P thieves will be extremely hard to 1v1 esp if they sit in short bow while S/D will basically just evade and avoid ur burst work on timings and spamming blurred frenzy + combo shatters afterward and chaining dazes on your diversion.
Why all the “lol noob”-like comments? If he’s new, just tell him how to play properly instead of laugh at him -.-’’ Noone was expirienced when entering PvP / WvW the first time.

A full zerk thief that spams Heartseeker will die very quickly to any retaliation. I was roaming solo in WvW and got caught off-guard by a full-zerk Thief. Didn’t expect the HS spam (used to fighting Condi Thieves) and so I didn’t react until I went down. While down I brought him to about 5% from full before dying (mind you, this was in the downed state).
I went back to where he ganked me and… surprise, surprise, I get ganked. This time I rolled as he started, casted some CC on him so I could get some more casting in and then just nuked him with Phant strikes —> shatters. He barely scratched me.
Quick tips I’ve learnt over the past year to help you wreck thieves.
- When the thief invis’, keep moving, rotating and never, under any circumstance, back pedal.(Walk backwards.)
- Try and keep a block, invuln or blink for when they’re about to break invis. Try and time this for when they’re about to break invis and burst. This mitigates any backstab damage, and if blocked, returns a significant burst.
- Double energy runes are amazing, pair that with a staff and you’re jumping everywhere. I recommend shatter for this very play style. You can move in and out of combat, while turning that mitigation into damage.
- Using an iWarden as the thief goes invis will spawn on where they’re standing. Using this method, you can get some insightful guesstimation into what they’re gonna do next. ie, come in for burst, back off and regen a little. Make sure that you keep on the harass the moment they start to run away.
- IF you’re playing shatter, feign a flee. Thieves are greedy and will chase you. When you think you’ve got them in a good position, summoned phantasmed while running, etc. and have enough for a burst, send your sword 3 backwards, and blow em up. Nothing counters a thief harder than surprise.
- Stack those dazes when they start to get low. If you can sense you’ve got an upper hand for them, be prepared for them to invis. Stagger your clones, and hit em with an f3.
- and finally. Dont overextend and chase them down. If a thief hasn’t been able to kill you, and is running, consider this a personal victory. You’ve probably hurt their ego.

Well – I don’t play much WvW but … WHAT IS PU ?

Prismatic Understanding, grandmaster Chaos XII trait. It’s key to a lot of defensive/condi/stealth builds.
I found that staff and offhand sword pretty much guarantee a win vs a burst thief. Decoy is also necesary.
Hi.
This video after 3.20 show how I usualy fight thiefs in both sPvP and wvwvw using Pu.
Updated version of this build will soon be avable in video, this is old 2.0 version:

I would say it entirely depends on your build. If you are shatter, then a S/D thief is not a pleasant encounter.
is that the “I get pretty much op kitten during stealth” thing?

Thieves are actually pretty weak, especially after the fairly extensive nerf job they got this week.
I was just in a match against three of them and racked up more kills than I ever had before. (They weren’t experienced, but then neither am I. )
As someone suggested the key to thieves is to get them off their rhythm. Most are strongly oriented around combos and sequences, and IME most thief players are poor at adapting when their plans go awry. Be mobile, use stealth yourself, use defenses, it drives them crazy.
Scepter is rapidly becoming one of my favorite weapons (never thought I’d say that) in part because of thieves. In a 1v1 I see a stealth, I pop up scepter #2, and suddenly instead of a big backstab crit on me the thief has a huge torment stack on him. Thieves have awful condition removal unless defensively spec’ed, and most are not. Swap weapons, toss a zerker at him and usually the fight’s over, whether he dies or flees.
Really good thieves are a different matter. But then, really good players of any class can be a headache.
Scepter/sword, Arcane Thievery, Blink, Decoy. trait into Retaliation on Block and watch the thieve kill himself while attacking you :-)

Play one, so you’ll understand how they work. Get to know the weaknesses of your build and play in your favor. As for my answer, I feel confusion/retaliation are very good against them. Their blind and stealth are very annoying so you need to learn their pattern as well. Always try to face a thief or you get backstabbed (and it’s hard because they move alot).
Lately, I’ve been reading lots of mesmer threads/posts and if I read you guys, mesmer is the alpha predator/face roll of PvP (Which is not). Not everyone are skilled you know ? So yeah, chill out and give constructive answers.
@Krispera, why I linked this vid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1afZXOD8fE
It show how to by use the dodge roll fish for the BS,s as a shatter mesmer. Ofc a PU condition build is alot more efefctive versus a BS thief as it basicly disable the thief but kittenter you need to be smart and take controll of the fight.

If you play shatter mesmer, then losing to a s/d thief is normal. The matchup is impossible to win if the thief does not totally mess up.
there are however some tips I can give you
Avoiding their opening is the most important thing vs a thief, their traits will make you poisened for 10 second+the damage their opening burst did. Healing right after won’t heal you for a lot because of the poisen so it will be very hard to get back into the fight. Try predicting when they’ll open and act defensively by either chaos storm, distortion or a well timed evade.
Furthermore try using a knock or pull to get them out of shadow refuge
Standing in chaos storm is your best friend as the random aegis procks and random daze will help a lot versus a thief.
Try to be defensive when you see him popping his steal he got from you (consume plasma, gain all boons) or when they have all boons up from lyssa runes as you can’t really do much vs stability and protection.
Try standing close to your phantasms when they are in stealth as they’ll immediatly attack the thief once he reveals himself.
I hope these tips helped, but if the thief is good then god have mercy on you

Same time as if you play PU a good thief will simply not fight you as its close to impossible to win 1 vs 1 for him/her.

If you are using clone death traits and have your own stealth slotted; you can time it right to force their attacks to hit/kill your clones.
This makes Thieves unhappy. Very very unhappy.
You’ll only fight em off if you have a dedicated roaming or dueling build.
Blackwater is effective in that since it punishes the thief for attacking.
Bad thiefs can even get killed by it.
Good thiefs will just poke you a bit and go away.
It’s a very boring build though and pretty useless in bigger engagements.
So i stopped using it.
Now i just view thiefs as a natural occurring wvw hazard that’s pretty much out of your hands, cant be bothered to have a whole build dedicated to stop gankers.
Luna Solares – Mesmer
kittenter the easiest way to kill thieves is turn them into moa then burst.
Yesterday I’ve found a thief that was almost all the time invis, I tought they nerfed this stuff but apparently it still work (or maybe another build with the same result).
As a Mesmer and Thief player in WvW, I can say in good faith, a good thief will be all BUT impossible to kill for any Mesmer build. Simply put they can out last our defensive cooldowns, and if it for some reason it starts going south, they can simply reset the battle to square one.
Our biggest bane will be any thief who has some patience, and the willingness to try and outlast our cooldowns. Not to mention there are some builds still around that while glassy can still kill us in 4 seconds flat depending on our own build/gear setup at the time. Like every fight it will come down to who makes more mistakes, but the odds should be in the theif’s will house if they have a clue.

If you are casting a phantasm when your target goes invisible, the phantasm will not appear and the skill goes on cooddown. Or is there some trick I have missed?

There’s always a perma-stealth build. It’s typically really, really weak and used for poking and prodding someone until they die (or if they’re generally weak, aka most upleveleds).
The strategy is to wait for a solo roamer to come by and then snap at him and hopefully get him while he’s unaware. Another strategy is to go after upleveleds at the back of a zerg and kill them really fast before you get spotted. A lot of time in zergs people won’t react to getting hit.

No it will. Only reason it would not appear is if the thief blinded you upon entering stealth.
Smallscale <3 Vabbi
The Original Dudes [to]
Know the duration of the thief’s stealth ability he uses and try to avoid/block the initial burst. Do not use big skills while blinded. Try to keep 1 iDefender out at all times. Distortion when you need to heal or avoid big cooldowns. Use daze to interrupt their heal if you can. Try to either keep conditions up if you’re a condition mesmer, or try to get duelists up if you’re playing phantasms. The range and quickness of the duelist’s channel plus the bleeds it puts on them creates a lot of pressure for the thief.
You basically want to make them play defensively. If you are constantly playing defensively and not putting out any offense, then you will lose.

the only thing they nerfed was perma-stealth, which was overkill. A thief can still have a stealthy build, but now it’s not a cheap win.
Against GOOD thieves, I feel the best weapons are GS S/S
GS mostly for the cripple and some DPS from the izerker. Also the knockback is great for shadow refuge.
Sword for the block and the evasive swordsman.
Against good thieves, Duelest and Warlock are probably the worst. All they are is CnD bait, a good thief will CnD off them all day till they make you mess up, usually make u waste a cooldown with a blind or sumtin.

You cant eat what you can’t catch.
Something I haven’t seen in this thread is to use a typical thief tactic against them - don’t be afraid to disengage from the fight and reset if you think it’s going poorly, particularly if you have a number of skills on CD. Pretty frustrating for a thief to fight you for a few minutes, feel that they’ve got the upper hand, and then... *poof* you’ve thief’ed them. xD

The idea that in order to counter something so unspecific as “THIEF” is to use a specific build, skill, trait Is idiotic. I would think that a proper suggestion would be to suggest a tactic that is available to the majority of Mesmers.
