I’ve been leveling a mesmer and so far it’s great for single target. If I some how pull too many I get stomped.

Do you guys have any tips for taking on groups at lower levels? I’ve been using the staff/greatsword. I tried sword/focus but being in melee range seemed to kill me even faster.

The biggest advantage if you’re fighting melee is your iZerker. Try to initiate combat with GS2 to get the enemies focused on the illusion it spawns. Then cast iZerker and start kiting, continuing to channel your GS1 and spamming GS2 on cooldown. If they get close, try to use GS5 to knock them back, then use GS4 to re-cripple them and kite some more.

Also, try Sword/Pistol as your offhand. You’ll have an extra Disable in case you get into trouble with the Pistol 5 ability, and the Duelist on Pistol 4 is solid single target DPS. Other than that, just learn to evade, and if you’re dealing with a lot of ranged attackers, use the Healing ability that reflects projectiles to keep you alive while popping those heals.

Low level eh? My advice is to avoid groups. When you are 60+ you can start working on groups.

Make use of selfcombo’s. They helped me lvl up with ease at low lvls against any type of enemy and numbers. Temporal Curtain + Illusionary Leap/Swap will give you retaliation for 20~ sec which boost your dmg. Also use Feedack or/and Nullfield and use the same skill to give you Chaos Armor which will give you a lot of regeneration.

Basicly the same thing with staff’s Phrase Retreat. (However it can be a lot of button smashing to get the retaliation combo ^^)

Other than that you’ll just need to learn how to dodge at the right time.

Learn to kite (if you’re not needing to hit sword mh #2). Use the combos folks above posted (I use scepter/pistol and staff, so I use staff 5/2 for the armor (to save staff 4)). If you use torch off hand, or pistol off hand, you’ll have some good options for being able to affect enemies in an aoe. Above all, stick it out and before you know it you’ll be fine. Overpulls are always going to be a problem (with any class probably), but you’d be surprised how many you can take as long as you can kite well. It only gets better once you’re able to get the clone on dodge trait at level 40.
