Tips for newbie
Mmmm…..perhaps think of your sword as your main and your staff as your defensive, use when necessary secondary weapon? When you start to get overwhelmed, switch to staff and punch #5, bring up your phantasm and hit #2 to bounce back and gain chaos armor. As soon as things get a bit less squirrely….switch back to sword, run forward and hit #3 twice then blurred frenzy to finish. Rinse and repeat FTW. And dodge, dodge and dodge some more!

Get used to playing with Sword-focus/ Staff and shattering timely. By the time you reach 80 you will probably have gotten used to the playstyle and be doing good already.
don’t forget upgrading your gear and weapons every few levels. Don’t buy blues and focus on vitality on early levels.
Thanks!
I really like using focus, but the phantasm on that one can stink sometimes because it doesn’t move….
Also, blustein, what do you mean by dont buy blues.?
Goot tip is pracitce your movment in combat. Not many other classes is so depending on mobility ingame as mesmers as its a source of our dmg aswell as a way to stay alive. Practice on keep enemys just out of reach, have em bunched up in piles and deal dmg in bursts of aoe.
Also life gets ALOT better for a mesmer at 40 but even there mobility is a key.

Utilize your sword#3 cripple/immob to keep your foes on your phantasm. Or you can draw mobs in with temporal curtain.
Also, chaos storm and temporal curtain are combo fields. Use your leaps (staff#2, sword#3) and your whirl finishers (focus#5) for added functionality like chaos armor and condition removal.
Think of staff as your defensive/support weapon. You’ve got chaos armor, boon generation, an escape and clone generator.

blue equipment. look for master-gear (green) or yellow gear if you can afford it or craft it (which will give you a few levels on top).
Thanks!

if this is your first character DO NOT waste money on crafting, from 1-80 you may be able to afford 10-20 levels through crafting, it will also cost you between 6-20g, its much better to just level normally so you can afford an extra piece of exotic as soon as you hit 80, crafting has no benefits to it at all unless you want a legendary or a buyable title and even if you want a legendary its much more efficient to earn the crafting after you’ve managed to hoard a few hundred gold

number 1 tip. You will get better as you level up. Mesmer have the best traits of any class. You may fell under powered at 30 when you hit 80 you will feel rather overpowered
I posted this in another thread but I recommend buying masterwork (green) gear with power as an attribute. Also I prefer the sword or a pistol over the focus. And don’t forget to upgrade your trinkets.

I’m of the opinion not to spend money on gear at all until you hit 80 – just use what you loot from exploring.
Greatsword is pretty good in pve levelling – fairly relaxed and you can stay at range and doesn’t require much of the finesse of MH sword.
Grab decoy and blink asap – useful to avoid things you can’t be bothered to fight.
Explore maps for xp as much as possible and don’t be worried about running away from things if necessary.
