Trying out a Mesmer!
Yes it’s quiet difficult to master.
Ps: We can’t wield daggers, you must be thinking of either Sword/Pistol, Sword/Sword (Single damage) or Sword/Focus (AoE).
What gamemode are you planning for? I can only really speak for WvW roaming, but unless mesmers get some good condi cleanses, you can expect to autolose against the wave of P/D condi thieves coming ahead.

Different weaponspecs have different levels of skill required, and different max potentials. But mesmer skill generally has nothing to do with twitch reflexes, and a lot to do with positioning, deciding when to keep clones and when to blow them up, and when to use which utility. Thieves on the other hand don’t require as much situational awareness on the whole, but reflexes and timing of skills/dodges are far more important than for mesmers.
Mesmers’ greatest weakness is AoE conditioning, and they’re strongest against direct melee attackers.

Not a lot of skill required to learn what each skill does and its not a hard transition from thief.
Also as far as Mesmers not relying on Twitch reflexes? I dare you to play a mesmer with even a half second of lag, see just how much timing really matters for you to matter in a fight.

Conditions
AoE’s
Stealth
Sustained DPS
Burst DPS
We don’t hold up very well to a lot of things that others can get away with without resorting to things like PU. yes a Mesmer in a 1v1 has a good chance of winning, but a Mesmer vs a Thief is almost a guaranteed loss, vs a guardian or necro it depends on the build, vs a CC spamming Warrior its all about twitch reflexes and who got the drop on who as to who is going to win.
Mesmers are really only Strongest against New/dumb players who actually get confused by the clones.
