With what kind of solo roaming builds do you use staff? I can usually duel alright with it, but as soon as someone chooses to run away, there’s not a lot I can do.

That’s the downside of staff. In the very extreme form of Blackwater-specs, you have ~0 pressure and ~0 stopping power.

You trade it for superior defence and versatility. Don’t fight alone, team up with someone who is good at stopping targets. Then it becomes amazing.

Take x/F, x/P or GS in the off-set.

In theory metabattle is interesting. In practice it’s worthless, and that’s certainly the case here. Shatter roaming is really ill-advised in WvW, and that build in particular has some odd choices in it that really aren’t the best for WvW roaming either. I’d stick to the forums (where OP has been asking question) for actually up to date and accurate information.

Honestly I use staff with sword/torch for my shatter build in WvW roaming (solo or small group roaming) and I do perfectly fine and can handle most specs reasonably well (except maybe certain thief builds and PU condi mesmers, but then again I can choose to ignore PU mesmers and they won’t kill me).

You pretty much just have to live with most people escaping from you as a mesmer. Even if you use a greatsword if an Ele, Warrior, Thief, Engi, Ranger really want to run away from you they can no problem. Even med guardians can do it as well and other Mesmers due to stealth. It is a problem across the board for a mesmer.

At least with a shatter build it has the saving grace of at least potentially ending the battle quickly enough for the person not to escape as opposed to with a condition build. But then again a greatsword would end it even quicker. But using a staff is fine as well as it will allow you to hold your own better from a defensive standpoint. And if you do get focused staff can help illeviate some of that pressure.

And at least with staff you can run away better if you are outnumbered.

The best you can pretty much do is use traveler runes if you aren’t already.

That’s the spirit! I actually tried out GS / Sword+Torch last night and, boy, that torch insta-stealth is pretty nice. I think I still prefer a focus for my off-hand for swiftness.

Yes, as this person mentions, if someone really wants to bounce out of a fight, they will. Just know that them disengaging to either reset or not mess with you again is a compliment. I think we are all used to that 20% HP warrior that runs away and doesn’t come back.

I don’t like runners, so I am a fan of the GS / Sword+Focus weapons.

The staff’s ability to keep you alive is REALLY nice. I hope you have fun w/ whatever weapon set/build you choose. Test many things, see what you like best! As I mentioned before, there are builds here on this site as well as on other sites. Give em all a try. I test stuff in HoTM cuz I’m broke!
