Way to avoid backstabbing?
Single target skills prioritize the attacker’s target, so this wouldn’t work unfortunately.
Predict a thief. You don’t need to see them to know what they are doing/ going to do when they are stealthed.
Phase retreat/dodge around/ strafe around/ keep spinning so they can’t effictively get your back.
Osicat has made some good videos showing how to avoid thieves.
I would link them but you should be able to find them easily enough via google.
Basically what will help the most is leveling a thief yourself so that you understand at least some of their limitations.
I hate to give the answer of “make a thief yourself”, but that really is the best answer. Playing a thief even badly will familiarize you with at least how their basic mechanics and specs work.
Also they’re fun to play though I rarely play mine anymore.
Against offhand dagger thieves, you can sometimes predict when they are going to backstab you. It’s harder vs d/p so keep moving, changing your direction a lot to increase the chance for him to frontstab.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a lvl 70 theif and I’m about to try and get wvw map completion so I an thinking of how to deal with the challenges.
Always when possible, stay near your clones: if you dodge a backstab near your clone, the backstab will land on a clone, revealing the thief. Dodging without anything nearby achieves nothing: the thief will just hit #1 button again.
Block skills are also very useful if you have clones nearby. Normally thief can just spam bs through say aegis, but if there is something nearby, the bs will land on that something and reveals the thief.
Against a p/d thief you can try to move so that the clones will asborb the sneak attack.

Great tips.

This is hands down the best way to counter backstabs. Osicat demonstrates it amazingly. Well worth a watch. In short, he dodges before eating a backstab which forces the thief to hit your clone.
