What Armor/build for WvW?
Thief 80 | Elementalist 80 | Mesmer 80 | Necromancer 80 | Revenant TBA
wvw roaming – pu condi rabid gear staff +sc/t or sw/p
www zerg – power pu zerker gs + staff
I’m struggling a bit with this as well!
So far, power-based builds are giving me the most oomph. While I love conditions, especially in dueling, a good portion of my condition damage is unfocused and therefore unreliable. While things like Mistrust are good for tagging, I just haven’t seen the kind of “confusion bomb” scenarios I would hope for.
Build-wise, there’s obviously PU anything. It strikes me as more of a dueling play style, but don’t underestimate the value of getting a single target downed in a large fight, plus the survivability is worth mentioning.
I’m really liking the interrupt builds as well. With Mantra of Distraction and Chaos Storm, I can usually get a few good interrupts off pretty reliably. Paired with the Domination trait that stuns my enemy, I can’t overstate the benefits of an instant stun/immob on a fleeing foe enough. Plus, if you do interrupt, the 3s quickness from the Domination Trait lets you get your mantra charged pretty quickly.
Inspiration… I’m still struggling with. The healing output feels low and the condi removal seems inconsequential. Someone in another post said it’s best played more aggressively, and I think I need to try that out. I tend to stay in the background, but all the boon sharing, distortion, condi cleanse, and healing are probably better suited for mid-line.
You can also use variants on Chaos Maestro 2 for boom share build.
What I tried: Dom(1,5,9)/Chaos(3,6,9)/Inspiration(1,5,8)
Staf/sword+focus, Mirror, Signet of Midnight, Signet Illusions, Signet of Inspiration, Signet of Humility.
Zerker gear + pack runes.
PU is nasty, I met a team 2 mesmer + 3 engies with nades, camping camp from stealth ….
What I think might also work (and I will try today) is Temporal Enchanter build with PU with: Veil, Null Field, Portal, TW/MI
It depends whether resistance works against stun/knockback conditions as well and whether PU traited Veil gives more stealth to zergs.
For the Rabid WvW Roaming set,
is this the sort of trait setup I should be going for?

And this for the PU Zerker setup?

If you’re roaming at the moment and for whatever reason not taking PU, you’ll find yourself at a disadvantage against pretty much every other mesmer who is taking PU. :/
Zerker gear. Try Dom/duel/inspiration. Pack runes. When zerging make sure in group take heal on mantra charge. Your shatters heal and remove condition by taking blurred inscriptions. You share every 24 seconds by just summoning a phantasm. Really strong when you want to roam take off mantra and blurred inscriptions and take shattering removes boons.

Dom/duel/inspiration is a killer. Think better than pu for roaming imo.

It’s good, but PU currently makes it so incredibly easy to engage/disengage from anything – especially if suddenly getting 1vXed by a group.
Might be true. But with torch decoy mass invis I am plenty slippery. Conditions are wrecking but by taking inspiration (unicorn!) I have no problems.
Plus since conditions are a non issue I can slot signet of inspiration to take advantage of swiftness. Plus the random boon really helps with pack runes and inspiration line.

Yeah I must try the signet of inspiration with + swiftness duration.
I’m finding with the amazing mantra buff that I have enough condition removal from Mantra of Resolve (pretty much have 4 casts of it at the start of every fight with a small recharge delay halfway in between, so 8 conditions can be blown off in quick succession – at which point I can run/reset until it cools down again in around 18 seconds by the time you’ve used the second two charges – but in practice I never need to use it all in one go so I’ve got a steady stream of condition removal) and the torch trait.
For roaming, I am currently running PU shatter. It has very decent dmg and incredible survivability. I use full zerker to keep the dmg up and PU will keep you alive pretty much. The build I run is something like this. You should decide if it fits your play style tho.
I run PU / Condi shatter, I do great against vast majority of players, especially the zerker mesmers. Once in a while one will get a really good jump on me when my CDs are not back up or I have mobs on me etc, but otherwise I basically eat them for breakfast.
Build is obviously PU, remove condi on heal, remove condi and heal on shatter, phantasms give regen. Rest is all condi generation, confusion on blinds, shatters, etc.
gear wise I use a mix of dire / rabid / carrion with Antitoxin runes. My chest, legs, and amulet are dire, rest of jewelry is rabid, rest of armor is carrion. Weapons are staff, scepter / torch. Staff is Dire, scepter rabid, torch carrion. For sigils I use Superior Sigil of Generosity and Superior Sigil of Torment on each set.
I run mirror, decoy, and moa signet when solo. Alternate the last spot between blink and signet of inspiration or whatever else I need, for solo, small group dont really need stability cause have enough stun breakers.
Condi duration stat is mostly irrelevant cause of opponents condi removal, so I went for pure damage value instead, works much much better.
This build also does ok in zergs when I insta shatter, but is noticably worse at tagging targets then power builds, not by much though, my chaos storm is freagin amazing, any group that gets caught in it as my guys jump in is a guaranteed dead group. they just straight up assplode.
Downside is low maintained swiftness, I dont have trouble chasing people down cause I have a ton of cripple, and also, if it gets to the point when they start runing with condis on them, they often down anyways despite runing, but I do have to switch to signet of inspiration + blink when catching up to my groups.

with fullzerk PU I feel myself thief. Now it’s possible to run out from any fight what was impossible whis prepatch PU.
Full zerk power PU build is godtier while roaming, gs/sword torch hoelbrak runes -condifood (since there’s lots of bad condibuilds out there).
mirror, decoy, MoD, blink, mass invis.
dom duel chaos
I’ve been absolutely loving this for group WvW:
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-R;4ZUV1107RVV71;9;4TUV;0148258138;9;9;0k51-DY10y
A few things can be swapped around. Feedback/Temporal Enchanter for MoDistraction and Illusionary Inspiration if you want.
It’s been a great WvW build for me. Less focused on shatters landing, more focus on reflects and support. Sturdy, supportive, with plenty of bags. :-)
Dom/Duel/Insp with Greatsword and interrupts is amazing. Pure zerk or close to it, of course.
