So, I recently switched from a primary staff ele to primary dagger/dagger ele. I also switched from a rabid build to a knight build. And everything is going quite fine. Killing things is a breeze. Except for you pesky mesmers. I never had a particular problem dealing with them. But recently I’ve been having more trouble than ever before. Is it my build? Are all the mesmers getting better?

Well to get to the point; what kills your builds? What is the weakness to a good shatter mesmer? Is it conditions? Is it shear power? And more specifically what types of ele do you hate fighting? I’d be most grateful for any replies.

well i play an ele aswell and i got to say.. going staff as u said u are now. bad idea.. specially if ur going up against a mesmer u loose alot of mobility sure u have some controll skills now. but ur not going to kill as fast as u where when u are going with D/D its just not going to happen especially a shatter cat mesmer. ull probably get bursted down quick. I would switch back to D/D if i were u. U can use ur staff for WvW zergs and sieges.

BUT try conditions really. i play a sort of hybrid shatter/condition spec mesmer and ive faced a few shattercat mesmer lately and they die off really quick. lack of condition removal is funny. my Build is 10/25/15/0/20 stacking massive confusion while still doing rediculous damage this is for my spvp tho idk how this fairs in WvW yet. soon i will.

Conditions are pretty bad for me. High burst kills all classes and especially a Mesmer if you can ignore all the illusions. Conditions on the other hand just suck the life out of me. I have no reliable condition removal in my build.

You misread. I switched from staff to D/D.
Edit: Also thanks. I figured it might be a lack of condition. My rabid build had ton of condition damage and I never had trouble but I switched to deal with other classes that wipe condition easy.

Well I’m currently full knights geared. I’ve been running 0/10/0/30/30 for the added boon duration and attune swap as well as the added heal from EA. That said I just switched to 0/10/10/30/20 to see if the extra condition helps plus having some toughness and armor of earth doesn’t hurt. And its for WvW.

Alrighty umm i run 0/10/0/30/30 period for all i want that full boon duration and recharge on attunements but anyway i run with clerics armor for the extra heals (PVT is good aswell if u have that) run with 6x dolyak runes for 100% regeneration its small but ur constantly getting healed so w.e more tanky i run with PVT daggers bloodlust sigil on one battle sigil on another and finally i run with carrion accessory’s i might change to rampagers idk yet but carrion will do for now u have alot more condition damage now ur dragons breath is verry verry deadly aswell as ur churning earth and other bleeds on u have on earth #2 i still use EA for earth dodge adds even more bleeds got to time it right but for this set up ur basically staying above 15k health at all times while putting the hurt on ur enemy the only thing about this set up is its low crit chance. if u wanna adjust it you can for extra crit chance but this is basically my tanky tanky super tanky build that never dies lol.

Just while facing a mesmer keep a cool head dont get angry because i know it can be verry annoying confusing the crap out of you trying to find the real mesmer but its kind of easy u can tell mostly by the clone movements and where he is going to pop up next or some mesmers like to use signets that is also an even easier way right thier.

The thing is that mesmer doesen’t have a lot of weaknesses when played well. A supprising burst is one, usually coming from thiefs or warriors. Conditions and aoe are the best counter to mesmer I think. One important thing is to keep steady dps on the mesmer and see through the “tricks” (the faster you will find where the “real” mesmer is, the faster the fight ends in your favor). Shatter Mesmer, the most common you will face, is fragile after all.

To be honest, I haven’t lost in 1vs1 situation to an ele in so long time I can’t even remember when, though a good bunker ele could maybe kill me given time… a lot of time.

What I like though is that a lot of players are getting better and fights against different professions are getting a lot tougher, so we’ll see.

I see us having two key weaknesses:

  1. Getting jumped. We rely on setting up the fight, more than many other classes.
  2. Someone running away. We are the slowest class, so people can often get away from us.

However, outside of that we are quite good at overpowering opponents.

The strength of heart to face oneself has been made manifest. The persona Carighan has appeared.

Try condition and avoid their burst. Most mesmers run a burst build and arcane thievery + null field are rarely seen utilities in burst builds, atleast in wvw.

If it is 1v1, the first thing I do (D/D ele here) is engage but play defensively and save my utilities. I want to test the water first before I fully engage. I want to see what build they are. Use RTL and get out of combat and heal up then re-engage once you have found out what build they are. If they are power, I slot armor of earth. If they are condition, I slot cleansing flame. Either way, I always engage them aggressively. This is for WvW of course.

You can have a decent condition removal Mesmer, but it is definitely a weakness since we have to devote traits and utilities to it, none of our weapon skills will innately remove conditions.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat on a capture point with a god awfully long Poison stack keeping my out of combat regen from kicking in, I usually at least bring null field but it has a decent CD.

In WvW, it’s probably a good idea to run Arcane Thievery regardless of build. Swapping boons and conditions has ended the fight more times than I can count.

Thanks for all the great tips guys! It’s hard enough becoming good with a new set but fighting mesmers has been a new hell for me. Hopefully I can put some of this to good use.

I play both a Mesmer and a D/D Ele. As a Mesmer I don’t have any problem fighting D/D eles. As an Ele, I die to burst from mesmers and nothing else. If I can avoid the burst I generally win. This usually means alot of mobility and playing it safe. Flying all over the place limits burst from shatters, if you suddenylu lose a chunk I would get the hell out of there and keep running circles around as you heal up then straight back in. As an ele your strength shines over the long term. I wouldn’t be afraid to switch and attack phantasms if the mesmer is using them, particulally bersekers as that cripple is annoying (even thoguth you can cleanse it) and phantasms die reasonably easy.

I gear both to be tanky.
