Why do you <3 Mesmer?
Scepter is great if you want to run shatter heavy/confusion build. The greatsword is my weapon of choice because if you notice in mobs when your beserker goes off it is a HUGE AOE. Also when fighting a boss with a GS it is possible to get 3 out at once. I recommend it for any build… And the main hand weapon selections arent too bad.. I do GS and then Sword/Pistol… Blurred frenzy really helps with survivability… Its just learning how to time your shatters… What level are you at right now?
Also the number 5 skill with the pistol is really good for crowd control. If you trait for ti it can do 4 bounces…
They are very fun at 80. When I bought the game- I was pretty sure that I was going to be a mesmer. Made my character and shelved her at about level 10. I then went back to her and finished her up to 80 and she is by far the funnest character to me. I cannot even level any other class now because it is missing so much from the mesmer.
1. Blink- cannot live with out it. To get out of trouble or just to shoot ahead.
2. Portals- I do not keep it on my bar all the time but it is super fun and when I do puzzles with my husband if he falls I can port him up :P
3. Confusion- it is so fun to see the numbers pop up as people hurt themselves lol
4. Focus- I don’t use this all the time but if you wvw pulling people down to their death is always a blast.
5. Invisibility- Love it just for fun only other class I know that can do it is a thief and I am dead as a thief lol so doubt I will have an 80 of that class.
Edit-
How could I forget— Butterflies!
. . . because it’s so good it has to be nerfed each patch!
Mesmer play styles are exactly the kind I like and the profession calls to that younger me when I first started playing video games; that role playing side that simply loved being the smooth talking, deceptive, confusing and intelligent character.
- Dr. Alfred Lanning, fictional character of great intellect.
But watch out on the sPvP forums people ARE STILL WHINING that we do too much AOE damage with our mindwrack and we are too survivable…. SO on and so on… Its getting really annoying.
I like the mesmer due to its complexity and deception. I’ve never played any character like it. Its appealing because I’ve played so many mmo’s over the years but I’ve never played anything like a mesmer.
You wont like hearing this but I felt my mesmer just wasn’t complete until I hit 80 due to important traits. I felt forced into playing a certain setup when I wanted to be playing another style…. until I hit 80.
Mesmers have been nerfed consistently thats for sure. Mesmers nerfed… Thieves buffed… working as intended?
Because they are the most fun and a charr Mesmer us kitten even with butterflies! (love the filter bad—- becomes badkitten perfect for charr!)
Proud player of Crusader, Arcanist,
Beastmaster, Shadowraider, and Shieldbearer Zakk!
because i can one shot thief’s with mindwrack and sit their and laugh and roll on the floor before they respawn ^^
Because it gives me an incredibly diverse toolkit at any one time that lets me too all kinds of things. I can melee, and be safe from harm. I can shatter, or hold onto my minions. A teleport is just a button press away at all times. I have a stunbreaker tied to my sword 3.
Mesmer just has so many perks that, moving to any other class, I always find myself missing.
I love Mesmers because I love burst damage, and casters.
I love my mesmer because I can build nearly full glass cannon and get away with it both in PvE and PvP.
Thanks for all of the replies so far, and keep them coming. I have a bit more time to post now, so I’ll try to touch on some of the key notes from multiple posts here.
First, my Mesmer is currently 13. I played around with GS a bit more last night, and I suppose it is OK, though still not one of my favorite main hands. I can see how it would be a useful AoE source in DEs though. I also want to try out more with the Scepter and a shatter build, but it seems this would not be very viable without traits.
Which brings me to some other posts. A couple of people had said that the Mesmer does not feel complete until level 80, mostly due to trait setups. I thought this might be why the Mesmer feels a bit unfinished at lower levels. I never had that feeling on my Necro (main), because, frankly, Necro traits are not very game-changing. With my Necro, I felt mostly whole at level 30, based on weapons and utilities alone, while traits were there to grant minor bonuses while leveling. I get the impression that traits are far more build defining on the Mesmer, meaning you need to be a high level to specialize.
My Mesmer is a Norn instead of Charr, but giant Norn clones with butterflies are still pretty awesome…
Lastly, I really find the in-combat mobility entertaining, especially coming from the Necro. I am also glad to hear that Mesmers can effectively go glass-cannon zerker gear, as that is something I am looking for in an alt as well.
The skills mesmer have, shattering with ~15k damage… blink, decoy, mirror images etc, and you can make alot of confusion if you know how to play, and I mean by confusing who the real player is, or just annoy enemy by running around and making clones
And what Lordryux say, instakilling thief and laugh at it.
Someone say game crash must be related to OOM
when you read the log it’s not related to that whatsoever…
I love my Mesmer.
Let’s see. Insane skill cap. There is just sooo much you can do. While people’s opinion are a bit different, pretty much everyone agrees that mesmer is top 3 in terms of skill, if not first. Illusion management will make or break you.
You’re the best 1v1 class in the game, period. If anyone is really annoying you just Moa-Bird them for 10sec, watch as they can do nothing while you nuke them to death.
Really though who cares about 1vs1? Try 1vsX, with X being anything from 5 to 50.
Lots of utility with Time Warp, portals. Insane mobility in combat with extremely short blinks (in multiples), lots of stealth, stun breakers and of course you confuse the kitten out of your enemy.
In WvWvW you can easily go pure damage and dominate. Mesmers simply don’t die to damage because they can avoid taking any. SPvP is different as you need to stay within cap range and therefore need to be more tanky.
I recommend you check out some youtube clips of mesmers going 1v5 and 1v40 and coming out ontop.
If you’re skilled enough you can take on multiple opponents. Nothing more rewarding than executing a enemy in the middle of their zerg while hitting distortion (full immunity to everything, 1s per clone so 3s) and they can do nothing about it. Enemy dead, stealth, staff blink, blink, mirror image, leave 40 confused enemies behind.
Pve? Time warp and great single damage target, also really good aoe with staff and shatter spam. People love having me in a group, aside from a ocational warrior or guardin (for tank or 4warrior 1mesmer groups) we are the most asked for class.
Negatives? Leveling is a kitten. 80 is awesome so easily worth it. I don’t see many mesmers at all simply due to this, and it’s fun being somewhat unique.
Not really a negative, but requires high skill to perform well vs GOOD opponents. If you’re not fast enough to staff blink or decoy when that rogue stuns you you’re gone. If you use your kit properly he will cry tears.
I can go on and on but give it a try.
@Manditory, you say 1vX , 4<X<51, have you made a 1v50? or did you see that or made it up, cause I can hardly think ONE mesmer can take 50 people?
Also want to add that mesmer is far superior in 1v1 than any other class, like Manditory say, you can soak up damage with shatter #4, makes you invulnerable (forgot the name)
I had a engineer, was boring then I tried mesmer, was something else, fun, the skills(said earlier), and the way you could play, huge damage, or tank, you can choose that if you want, or a condition build. Basically a class that you can make to a whateveryouwant into.
Leveling was a little boring, but with GS/staff you can take leveling quite easy.
Went to WvW, changing to shatterspec, having more fun than ever, but I fail sometimes, but I hope I learn why.
Listening to music wile playing makes me play alot better.
And the reason I still play mesmer, haven’t mastered it, prolly never will, so much you can experiment with, and that it’s a challenge to play actually.

I disagree that the scepter is good for shatter builds. It is probably the slowest of the main hand weapons for clone generation.
ive tried that whole spawn clones and keep annoying the zerg thing earlier lol. was kinda funny i kept about 15 players busy and they constantly kept destroying my clones i did get to like 4k hp thats when i used MI and ran away xD but it was fun hilarious even
I used to but it is getting harder and harder with each patch as PvE getting worse due to the PvP players whining constantly instead of learning the mechanics of the game. December patch gave me some hope and I started to love again but bam PvP whining resulted in the year beginning in a nerf.
Well the game is called Guild Warriors 2 for a reason I guess.
I didn’t mean you actually kill 50 people, haha. But you can run towards the zerg, bait a bit and naturally you will get chased by quite a few people. Ive been so annoying that I’ve had entire zergs follow me.
Once chased start kiting while finding a target and dishing out damage on him. We do great damage on the move via illusions and strafing for auto attacks. Also confusion etc. Don’t run in a straight line btw. Once downed hit distortion (shatter 4) and go for the kill. Or you can leave a clone on him (makes him bleed out unless helped) and continue kiting. You can come out with several kills this way.
I also play with GS so #5 skill is great way to push away people trying to ress someone, then Finish Him yourself right after.
Why do I love being a mesmer? Because I’m a nice guy on the outside but a sadistic prick on the inside. Killing people with explosions that turn into butterflies fits my personality nicely. I only wish we could use shortbows so I could equip The Dreamer and then kill with butterflies AND rainbows!
cause…i’m not forever alone :’)
Ranger is good too for the same reason…

Thought so, about 1v50 :P, only done that to a smaller enemy zerg, like 10-15
Also got chased by 4 enemy once, my friend turned up, we crushed them. I couldn’t crush a necro, ranger, and 2 elementalist myself, running build that can’t take them, but when you run in a small group with friends, you can have a good time killing enemy after enemy, cause you can just burst down their health if you want, depends on your gear ofc.
