Your cries fall silent
The problem is that mesmer really isn’t that ridiculous in PvP (compared to thief cough, cough), people are just stupid as hell. After playing a mesmer for a while you learn their tricks, you learn their weaknesses and strengths, and you learn what to watch out for. I can say with certainty that in sPvP, and especially WvW, I can kill 90% of the mesmers I find regardless of what class I play. I know I’m not that good and I know they’re not that bad (most of them). It’s simply the case that I know what to expect from a mesmer and I know how to spot them in a crowd of clones, which isn’t hard.
Now what upsets me is when I see some idiot ranger or warrior sit there with two or three of my iBerserkers blending them into a fine paste every couple of seconds while mashing buttons trying to kill my clone. It upsets me because these are the people complaining that mesmers are OP and these are the people Anet is listening to.
As a result we get more nerfs on things that weren’t really broken to try to appease these imbeciles. The problem is these imbeciles will still die to the nerfed mesmer because they can’t figure the class out fundamentally. They will continue to die until they figure out the mechanics and they will continue to moan until the nerfs effect us so much that even these basic mechanics can’t kill the lowliest among them.
It is because of this we have such a monstrous reputation in sPvP while our PvE is utter kitten. It is because of this that we continue to see (and will continue to see) numbers nerfs in every patch, despite our abysmal PvE numbers.
I’ve come to the point where I’ve pretty much had it with this game. This last patch has been the straw that broke my mesmer’s back. Until they get their act together and actually fix things that are broken, stop arbitrarily changing numbers, and stop listening to the people who are upset that it’s a bit harder to kill a mesmer than clicking the person and rolling their face on the keyboard, then there’s really no hope for the future of mesmers. On top of the gear treadmill they’re adding, I’ve lost all hope in the game.
Exactly that.
Playing a Mesmer, I find it extremely easy to single out the realm Mesmer and focus them down. It’s just obvious who the real one is.
Yet I see plenty people constantly waste their stuff on my Clones. Clones which are so obvious not the real me, since well, 3 of me are standing still attacking at a veeeery slow interval. One is right now doing a dodge roll while spamming different skills.
Extreeeeeemely difficult, yes.
:(
All I know is we need EVERY defensive ability currently tied to illusions moved to signets or targetable aoe.
The ability to negate illusion summon by simply dodging, blocking, invulning, or blinding will mean we not only lose the attack that summons the illusion, but any passives it provides (I can think of DOZENS) , as well as the next shatter.
I think the main mesmer dev went on extended holiday leave, because no sane person who has ever played mesmer would ever suggest a thing.
Having phantasms fail to connect if blinded – sure
Having phantasms fail to connect if invulnerable – sure
Having phantasms fail to summon if out of LOS – sure
Having them fail to summon PERIOD from any of the myriad of ways people can negate incoming damage? HELL NO
These are our resource. We are balanced around and depend upon rapid generation of these things.
Haven’t you people played gw1? Anet is one of the all time worst when it comes to nerfing. They break a skill(s) instead of balancing. Its like the person making decisions is a kid who put random numbers or something… They killed so many skills in gw1 during 5y i played it its crazy to even think about it. The only HUGE difference between gw1 and 2 is, in gw1 we had tones of skills to chose from, in gw2 you have FIVE lol amazing…….
Not liking the portal cd increase. Fun abilities should not be nerfed.
ok, so i check out how bad the Phantasmal Berserker was nerfed and kitten A target is obstructed if there 3 steps on top of some stairs. That’s unacceptable. The enemy is clearly with you field of view. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED.
Mesmers still suffer from the world completion star problem after such a long time. There’s obviously not a team specialized on each class, or – sorry – whoever is in this team has no idea of the game, which is pretty much the only way to explain the portal change for example. Which is actually not a nerf or a change but just a case of “uh, let’s do something and see if it works out”. Nope.

Welcome to the way other players feel, I have had this obstructed problem for way too long on other professions than mesmer. Maybe now it will be looked at…

I’m just quoting this in the hopes that arenanet sees this. Cause they need to see this and do something about it. Revert the changes, cause stuff like the last update makes me want to quit the game for good (or at least till they fix it).

This is a very well written response about the current state of Mesmer due to general complaints about them in the past. You cannot beat your opponents until you understand about his strengths and weaknesses. Any profession in the right hands could be powerful and Mesmer is a profession that requires the players to have decent amount of knowledge and skills to make this profession shine. I remember when I was first playing the Mesmer after trying out more straight forward approach classes like warrior, elementalist, and guardian, I tend to find myself struggle a lot to survive and be able to kill things in comparison to other classes I’ve mentioned. After a long series of practices, research on Mesmer’s basic and advanced game play mechanics, and testing different skills with trait synergies, I’ve become a better Mesmer player. Mesmer the profession itself doesn’t change, the player is the real factor.
The profession is ONLY as good as the player’s knowledge and skill. Mesmer is the profession that requires the players to play right and properly, and not just mindlessly button smashing #X to deal damage and be viable most of the time. By now I’ve well over 1100 hours clocked on my Mesmer, I know the strengths and weaknesses of our profession very well by now. Any challengers who has little to no understanding about the basics and advanced mechanics of Mesmers will not going to have an easy fight with me, and anyone who has put their precious time into understand about Mesmers will make my time very difficult. The difficulty in challenge against a well prepared Mesmer will scale with the amount of knowledge that the contender has.
Whenever I had a challenging fight against profession X, I know that #1 he must have been a very well prepared player and equally skilled as myself. #2 he must have understand the basic + advanced mechnics about Mesmers game play and ways to counter them effectively. I do not go on their forum and start ranting about profession X. That is just an immature attitude and shows poor sportsmanship.
I really hope the devs who founded and build the GW2 Mesmer to take a deep look at this profession again. Changes are bound to happen in MMO, I can understand that. Changes have to done in a balanced way and does not bring up new cause of concerns and issues.

Yes but you also have AE attacks which aren’t blocked as a whole by a single target block.
Well put Mystic. I mainly play a condition P/D thief, and typically never fought Mesmers 1v1. That was the one class that really gave me a hard time. The fights got so confusing for me that I just decided to avoid them altogether. I never thought the class was overpowered or anything, I just didn’t understand anything about it. My solution was to roll a mesmer as my first real alt. Mid-20s now, I feel I’m really starting to understand the class, and now understand what tools I’ll need to beat them in the future. Of course, with this new patch, that should be quite a bit easier since my build is built heavily around, stealthing (auto blind, remove conditions), and evading. It’s going to take a pretty talented mesmer to actually cast a phantasm on me. I’m still not experienced enough on the mesmer to understand how deep this change goes, so I’ll continue to level up the alt, because I do love the class.
What breaks my heart is, every patch, seeing Guardians with PvP-only nerfs and mesmers getting smacked across the board.
I don’t PvP. I don’t give a kitten about it. I just want my mesmer to have a point in PvE. As is, everything mesmer can do in PvE another class can do just as well or better while bringing more DPS to the table.
Portal is already probably the most useless PvE skill mesmers have. It’s useful in like, 3 situations, and it’s incredibly broken with invisible limits and randomly breaks, can’t be cast on ground with aoe effects, or if you go up a ramp, has no visible timer so you can’t see how long or how far you can go to use it, and has half its stated duration. Instead of fixing it, instead of nerfing it in the situation where it’s dangerous – WvW – they nerfed it everywhere.
Every update makes me more and more glad that I switched my main. I don’t know what we did to make Anet hate us, but a PvE mesmer is a waste of a character slot. The lack of response on game-breaking unannounced bug/stealth nerfs is infuriating.

I don’t think there is a mesmer dev, last I heard during the BWE periods there are only two people doing balance. Jon Peters, a warrior and Ziggy, a thief.
That would explain why warriors were left in a good position and thieves got buffed.

it was stated in a post last night by a dev that there is 2 devs for class programming. So to restate yes that is 2 devs for all classes not 2 for each. You sir are correct.

1,100 hours? You played 100 hours a week since launch?
No offence, but surely you are aware of the fact that you are an exception and that Anet should not listen to you, but to the other 99.99% of the players, right?
Always carries a towel – Never panics – Eats cookies.
If mesmers were so OP my tpvp group wouldn’t be yelling at me to win my 1v1s against experienced players that know how to counter a Mesmer or people that play instagib classes(theives and 100b warriors)

If this is true, then there is no hope. Dev shouln’t be put in position to have their favorite class ditch the one they dislike or so to speak, the one they find too hard to encounter on live server.
In fact, there should be at least 2 dev at each class plus 2 producer supervising all thier work. Also, all new implementation/nerf should undergo an extensive talk where all those team discuss about why these changes are needed.
Sure, you can split those team to have 2 class at once but not more.
If the situation is like you saying, it’s a joke. A bad joke i’ll add.
(edited by Tekla.2139)
I sincerely doubt that. There might be two dev team leads, of two separate dev teams. But a team on a budget like ANet, producing a game as big as GW2, they don’t do that with just two balance devs (which would extrapolate to ~6-10 devs not counting programmers and artists).
That’d be … odd. Also highly doubtful they could deliver the content they do from that in the time they do.
Still no movement.

All this is breaking my heart. Mesmer enthusiasts need to represent at the next AMA and drive for some solid insight of Anet’s vision for the mesmer’s future.
I just wish the devs showed that they cared about them breaking the mesmer class with poorly thought out nerfs and changes… but they remain silent. In most games you’ll at least get a “we’re sorry and we’re working on it”… I guess we’ll have to wait until the next patch to see.

Okay, I’m going to come clean.
I am a HUGE fan of the Guild Wars 1 Mesmer.
I love it, every little thing about it.
I DETEST what has been done to us in Guild Wars 2 :-(
I still play the Mesmer. Ascalonian, Mesmer at that.
I want Hexes, I want controls, Degen, proper ruddy interrupts, not this half baked clone shattering that interrupts 20 seconds later!
:-(

Loved the GW1 Mesmer like no other MMO class ever conceived. Today I actually started pondering whether to play Prophecies from the start again, while the GW2 Mesmer hopefully gets patched up. Can’t stand all the bugs, all that lost potential.
Doesn’t it bother you that not a single dev has posted in these forums in other a month, yet other classes get updates? (Such as the ranger forum).
I also play an 80 engineer and I assure you it’s just as silent over there. ANet actually posts here more often which is scarey.
