If you’re running a build that uses deceptive evasion, running energy on at least one weapon set is important. I think in some cases you can get away with not running it on both with the understanding that you’re making a huge trade-off in damage and survivability with whatever sigil you choose to equip instead.

Mesmer has a lot of pressure on dodge use due to DE trait and the fact that if you dont have illusions up you have much more limited options for both offense and defense. Also, on a shatter trait spread you have a 50% uptime on vigor which gets you one dodge back in a five second window.

A huge trade off in damage versus survivability is probably overstating the magnitude of the decision, but I would suggest you test and record your play if possible to help you decide. Typically you are going to be camping GS a fair amount to range pressure and if you aren’t swapping weapons you essentially have a dead sigil in the sigil of energy in which case the fire/air combo is typically the go to on the GS. If you are on duel ranged and running staff on the swap set then there could be a case for going with an energy sigil on the staff because your staff is a very defensive weapon and well suited for kiting. If you are going this option keep in mind that you want to have capacity in your endurance bar before the weapon swap, so if you are at 100% endurance you should dodge before swapping into staff.

If you are on s/x it could also go either way. Torch stealth and blind and defensive use of Blurred Frenzy can be enough to work as well with or without sigil of energy depending on the matchup. Going with sigil of energy isn’t a waste on the set as its more offensive in nature than the staff so the clone you swap can be used for burst more easily in the sword set. The sword and pistol in offhand are a more yolo in nature versus decent players and with pistol especially the sigil of energy likely still wont be enough to bail you out when focused.

Some general suggestions/tips for any shatter build:
- Learn to kite. If at all possible you need to learn to relieve pressure and reset without spending a cooldown.
- Manage your dodges. Mesmer is much less forgiving to random dodge syndrome than many other classes. If you can, record yourself and watch your own play. There should be a reason for each dodge you use. Also watch to see if you are getting the full usage from your sigil of energy on your weapon swap.
- Realize that some matchups are absolutely terrible for mesmer and if you are soloQ’ing against decent and/or organized opponents you likely won’t have someone lineback and/or peel pressure for you. In these cases, sigil of energy isn’t enough to level the playing field in these matchups.
- Map awareness. You are a zerk amulet and often will be a priority target. Be aware of where the other team’s burst is at and try to position yourself and manage your cooldowns accordingly.

I like to run fire+air on gs for bigger burst or for example shooting at some running target at max range. Then energy+something on staff.

Another dodge would be great cause like frost said you’ll need every one of them.. but sometimes the extra damage from fire sigil translates into better defence too, I think this is especially true when fighting thieves.
