iMage aka Torch Phantasm needs some love
Uhm, just throwing some randomideas out here:
- It would be cool if the mage had like a channeled non-projectile attack, like those purple beams that the risen in arah use.
It could pulse confusion every second, 1 stack for 3 seconds. It would keep channeling forever, unless the target moves out of range or line of sight. It’s like a perma 3 confusion untill it dies/broke line of sight or range.
- Or it can be like the fire ele dagger skill where they breath fire, but instead of burning, confusion :D
I guess the cleansing conflageration trait can get kitten or so cooldown so it doesn’t become overpowered.

Idk, I like it from a pvp perspective. But obviously any confusion based attack will be very lackluster in pve due to the fact that enemies just don’t attack fast enough for it to be worth all the condition damage you’d need to stack. Retaliation is great everywhere except pve because honestly it is just easier to dodge trash mobs attacks and safer to dodge boss attacks. Although it does seem out of place as a weapon phantasm due to its double sided effects(IE, buff and debuff in one skill) and probably could’ve been combined with phantasmal disenchanter to make it a great 6 pt utility.
If it were to be replaced it would definitely have to be condition based due to the nature of torch and I’d suggest something like a ranger phantasm that lays down bonfires that apply either burning or confusion, possibly both, to enemies that remain within. It would fit the torch’s blast finisher nicely and would still fill the role of condition damage.

Back then I suggested the following:
iMage
- Casts purple homing orb (e.g. Guard Staff#2)
- Orb explodes on hit (area effect), deals moderate damage, applies 3-5 stacks of confusion
- Leaves behind purple flaming field for 3s (light, ethereal or fire)
- Field inflicts 1s burn per second to enemies
- Field applies 2s retaliation per second to allies
I still think that every Clone and Phantasm should be unique. The iMage however is a mix of Staff Clones and the iDisenchanter. The area effect would make it stand out and would be very appealing for condition builds (PvP/WvW). The burning field would be nice for either PvP and PvE. Making it a light or fire field would both fit the spirit of the Torch.
I just use it for clearing conditions now. Not even brilliant for that purpose alone, 1s casting time is silly, but its good when I’m stealthed.
However, people have an irrational fear of phantasms and don’t pay attention to the damage it really does, so a plus there.
I do think it needs to be slightly buffed, either make it a 1/4s cast, do more physical damage or 5 stacks on confusion. One of these 3 and I’d be perfectly happy with it, less of a wasted second.
It’s no secret that this phantasm is nearly worthless. As mentioned, its best use is:
A) traited condition clear
B) triggering clone on-death traits
If I’m not in search of one of those two things, I won’t even bother casting it.
It’s beyond sad that the confusion application of the iMage is weaker than the number 4 bonus on perplexity runes (3×3sec vs 3×5sec).

How about they breathe fire but apply Chilled, as a result, enemy also gets Confusion.
;)
How about just upping iMage’s damage by about 50%?
I’ve always thought it would be cool and thematically fitting if he threw a purple fireball that inflicted Burning & Confusion in an area around the target.
image is not the Worst phantasm ever. iWarden is. There is no place in the game for iwarden except combo finishers and reflects. Damage sucks since you can’t even hit your opponent with it. Lol. That’s the truth I have to say. They should really somehow modify iwarden so that it follows the enemy more precisely. They have to rework the animation tho. I would rather have that than have the reflect on the phantasm itself. Just my own opinion.
I am positive you are probably one of the only people to think that menace. iWarden is amazing and I love that it stays stationary so I can keep it between the enemy and myself. iMage needs a bit of a damage boost but I love it when traited.

iWarden is a great phantasm, you just don’t know how to use it properly. This again shows your lack of experience with the Mesmer class.

I still think it should:
- Attack using a “Rain of Fire” move, like the Ascalonian Mages. (Purple, of course)
- Crapcan the Retaliation, tbh – since ANet’s been doing their level best to make Ret. suck eggs for months.
- Replace said Ret. with Burn … seriously, it’s a Torch Phantasm, this should be basic, for kitten’s sake.
Congrats. IMage now:
- Is bloody useful.
- Justifies having a frigging obscene C/D.
Also. Sorry, Menace – but IWarden is a freaking monster. The sheer amount of mindscrew one can employ, even with it untraited, is epic. Traited, that thing becomes almost obnoxiously strong. Not to mention the amount of bleeds you can toss on someone with him and/or Duelist.
