Well, the first trait in illusions is pretty much mandatory. Beyond that, it depends on how you want to play and what weapons you use. Respecs are cheap, and unlike some other classes we have a lot of viable options.

Deceptive evasion from dueling is pretty popular, and also gets you critical infusion+sharper images along the way.
Crippling dissipation from domination is fantastic when soloing.
The weapon cooldown traits are very useful, particulary for the focus, greatsword, and phantasm heavy playstyles.
Illusionary elasticity is very nice for the staff.
Illusionary persona and mental torment are great if you shatter a lot.

Put 5 points in Illusions first. Then, it really depends on your playstyle and weapons.

If you are using a power/crit build, 10 in Domination gives you Crippling Dissipation. When you add clones on dodges from Dueling it compounds the effect or adds shatter fuel.

If you focus on staff, put some in Chaos and continue the Illusion lines to add some great survival that is needed until about level 40 when you really start to define how you want to set your traits, or respec.

Respeccing is so easy don’t worry too much about making bad choices early on. Just stick to the guidelines more experience player give until then.

Don’t abandon staff because of the game changes — it’s still great for conditions and can be quite tanky. Most phantasms die before their 2nd attack anyway (because of shatter or because the mob dies), so the ‘small’ decrease in iWarlock attack rate really doesn’t impact most activities.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

If you’re using the Staff, you’ll want to use Condition Damage. If you’re going GS, go for Power.

You’re safe to build like a glass cannon in the early levels. Depending on your weapon stack power, precision, cond damage, and crit damage. Later on I decided some toughness was required, right about the time I went to a dungeon and we all got our kitten handed to us.

Deceptive Evasion isn’t just a good idea, it’s dang near essential. The two minor traits you get along the way in dueling just make it even better: you dodge, you get a clone. Clone crits, inflict a bleed. You crit, you get to dodge more. All in the trait line that gives you a better chance to crit.

Up to level 15, though, I agree with the consensus of putting your trait points into illusions for the skill recharge minor trait. 20% is a big deal. Not to mention +50 to condition damage is a good thing…

Beyond those 25 trait points, though, it’s pretty much up to you. Me, I went 10/25/25/0/10 because I like the chaos benefits (and toughness lets you take a hit without falling down every time), but I also have a major focus on inflicting conditions and clone spam. If that’s not your style, I encourage you to try something else.
