looking for advice after a year+ break.
The rules that were valid 1 year ago are still valid now:
- defensive stats are useless
- offensive stats are useful
- celestial was never good on mesmer for pve
Thus knights, Soldier, etc. are all useless in pve (except when needing to hit toughness breakpoints as tank for raids maybe).
Same goes for Traveler Runes. If you want those for the 25% movement speed passive (god knows I wouldn’t know what else they are good for except as cheap boon duration which can be better gained via Durability or Herald runes) you might find this trait interesting https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Time_Marches_On .
Otherwise currently it’s same old same old, go berserker or if possible Commanders (which now is the must use in raids when not using a budget build since boon duration food gets wacked soon).
That might all change with the expansion though and very likely will.
So do this: get exotic berserker gear, play around with the class a bit, finish up story and achievements you want to have. There is not that much time until the expansion so anything more expensive seems futile until the expansion builds are out.
Gearing up a Chrono is expensive, no way around it. You either need expensive boon duration gear for spamming AoE Quickness and Alacrity, or expensive healing + boon duration gear for spamming AoE Quickness, Alacrity and Regeneration/Healing, or expensive Viper gear for condi DPS builds.
However, there’s a big balance patch happening this Tuesday which will change some things critical to Chrono, namely boon duration, so wait till after the meta resettles to decide what to focus on. Keep an eye on [qT]’s website to see how/if the optimal builds change: http://qtfy.eu/build/mesmer.
That said, all that stuff is mainly for PvE end game raiding and T4 Fractals. If you just want something good enough to explore open world HoT and PoF, then start with a set of Berserker or Assassin’s gear with Scholar Runes, Force/Air Sigils, and Sword/Focus. That’s a useful basic gear set to start with before getting into farming the more specialized and expensive stuff.

Raid aside, PVT gear works in everything across the board. Still the anti-everything else of zerkers I see.
Remember you can’t do damage if you’re dead.
Crystal Desert
alright, cool. thanks for the help ya’ll.
what ascended accessories should i shoot for? i think i have enough laurels to buy a full set. i guess i could just save them until the expansion dust clears since i probably won’t really need that extra however-many stats for a long time.

None, use the Living World Season 3 maps to get all trinkets. Save your laurels.
Stats, can be berserker or commanders (personally I’d recomennd commanders here as addition to berserker weapons/armor which will most likely be exotic).

yeah, i already have berserker weapons/armor and i’m currently using soldier accessories because i had the mats laying around, so i was able to save 30-40g. commander was power/percision/toughness/concentration, right?
