mesmer commander
first since Mesmer is slow you need something for speed (runes of the travler)you don’t need the zerg waiting .
second you need to be the last man standing a tanky build with condition damage and staff would work.
all you utility should be about group support.
Zergs typically chain-cast swiftness, so IMHO Traveler Runes would be a luxury item, not a requirement.
I’d say go Knights/Rabid gear, or maybe even Soldiers.
Yeah, The zerg will drop their swiftness on the commander, especially if his kitten is slow and falling behind.
Building to survive is a solid option. As the commander, you should be the last to die because the moment you’re dead, the fight’s lost.
You’re going to want melandru runes as a commander. You can keep up with the zerg no problem, but wading through the front line of a fight needs a bit more specialized runeset.
You’ll want staff and probably sword/focus. I’d recommend going for gear that’s very tanky, probably a mix of soldiers, knights, an cavaliers to keep you alive and kicking in the middle of the pain train.
I’ve known a thief commander who would just port to the other side of an incoming pain train, and everyone was to just push through to him. Slightly different but the same thing in the end. You could achieve the same thing with blink.
You might try the Immortal Build, or you might (gasp) go for a phantasm build with gs/s-f, or you might go for the new lockdown options.
I would recommend against using a staff because you don’t want to vanish into the middle of the zerg when leading the charge – it sends the wrong message to see the commander yell charge and then move in the opposite direction.
Be aware of the power inherent in the mainhand sword and the offhand focus, the versatility of your greatsword, and the immense power at your disposal with the offhand sword and the offhand pistol. Know that the scepter and torch are not for the noob-hearted. Look deep into the portal until it gazes back, and be driven mad with the power within. Cast veils upon thy zerg, and laugh mightily when you assassinate heaps of enemies by the score. Use thy Null Field well, and strip thy enemies of their boons, sending them weeping into the loving embrace of their spawn waypoint.
Thou art the Mesmer.
Thine power is infused with the laughter of the gods.
Go forth, and troll.
youd be better off with more defensive runes or maybe even runes of speed =, you should be running null field as a commander anyway, so with glamour reduction in adept inspiration conditions shouldnt be too much of a problem.

Just roll guardian, mesmer becomes even more useless by making himself a tank in raids.
But anyway since you want a build, I’d say get a party with at least 2 guardians and pick something like this:

With the new patch you’ll have +600 toughness while channeling a mantra. I’d say don’t charge your healing and cond removal mantra before the fight, only the stability. Once you get flanked or go head to head with the other melee train of the enemy, get stability from yourself or from one of your guardians and charge 1 of the mantra’s.
If you flank the enemy, leap in with #3 sword, immobilize them and use your shatters besides F4. Safe F4 if you get stuck in CC without stability ready.
Oh and btw, don’t use #2 staff. Blinking is the last thing you wanna do with a meleetrain. Especially pugs get disorientated quickly like that and you’ll have a big spread out mess, you don’t want that.
Use #4 and 5 staff if you feel like you need some protection/

Eh, haven’t tagged up in a while, but my gear’s the same overall spread it was when I did.
Celestial trinkets (Except that darn backpiece), I generally go frontline with one of the following:
- Mixed Soldier/Knight’s with Traveler.
- Rabid armor with Perplexity.
- Mixed Apothecary/Shaman’s with Melandru.
Build depends, although heavy Chaos/Inspiration specs tend to take more of a beating when you get focused…and as a Commander, you WILL get focused. My usual “Zerg” build’s either Triforce (20/0/0/30/20) or heavy Interrupt (0/20/30/0/20 or 10/20/30/0/10), but I can drop Inspiration a little easier, due to Celestial trinkets all packing some spare Vitality.
