state of mesmer
Terrible in solo content. You will be able to do most of it but at about half the speed of other classes while requiring twice the effort. Often more frustrating then fun.
Every raid group will want at least one Chrono for support and can fill in the tank roll
Terrible in large scale WvW unless you like providing portals and nothing else
Roaming we are decent but other classes are better and will move around the map faster
Good condi build in PvP at the moment but we are always vastly overrated by the PvP community that always demands nerfs no matter what posistion we are in and Anet is more then happy to oblige. Though the last few patches were surprisingly good for us.
I’ll just quote the relevant bits in context from what Pyro wrote as it’s not too long ago
Mesmer performance in instanced content is fantastic. We work extremely well in a party and are a valuable asset to any group, if you’re good. A bad chrono is bad, a decent chrono is bad, a great chrono is excellent.
Open world PvE is different. Overall, Mesmer performance in open world PvE is heavily dependent on whether or not you’re alone. Soloing as a Mesmer is a miserable experience, no ifs ands or buts. It is certainly very possible, but it sucks. Your damage is low, mobs squish your phantasms, multi target capabilities are close to non-existent. If you intend on doing open world content solo, play something else. End of story.
However, you can still be useful if you have a party. Chrono is a great buff slave in any aspect of the game, and your party will enjoy the quickness and alacrity you pump out for any elite mobs or bosses. On the other hand, your buffing ability is worthless for just normal clearing, so most of your play will be grouping up mobs with focus so that everyone else can kill them for you.
However if a raid group or party already has a chrono you will not be wanted at all on chrono. Having a second class that you know how to play well is invaluable. Guardians are in general never a bad class to have especially now boon thieves is fixed.
thanks for the response, and its sad at the same time.
oh the problem that was with guardians and high lvl fractals, that could kill the hole grp? they fixed this with the last patch ?

Yes, mobs used to steal boons and when it stole retaliation usually supplied by guardians it did a lot of damage when you hit the mobs.
If you want to level and play a chrono it’s not a bad choice (except solo PvE), just keep a second class on standby for when a group already has a chrono. Oh and be prepared to put in a lot of effort into being good for a group.

It is acctully great for gvgs. That quckness and ressistance arent going to share themaelves. Same thing in pugs.
Don’t tell anet, but Mesmer is just fine.

The boonshare role is extremely strong in an organized group…but it’s total garbage in pugs, not sure why you’d think it’s useful there.
Power mesmer in pvp needs buffs no one plays them anymore because condi is stronger.
In pve mesmer is good, maybe little damage buff still needed.
PvE, perfectly fine everywhere, but requires you to adapt build to the situation to keep up with other professions. Not the easiest starter, but sure a great pick for the current endgame.

Mesmer is fine and a great profession
With regard to PvE, it’s what apharma quoted. Mesmer is brilliant in (instanced) group content, but poor at any kind of solo PvE due to their class mechanics and lack of core damage.

so how are mesmer right now?
solo HOT content?
fractals?
raid?
spvp/wvw ? (not so important for me)thanks
Mesmer is a great class but is somehow hard to play well.
You will go through HOT content quite easily, as any class, as long as you understand how it works. The class has many tools to survive in open world (mobility, stealth, decoy tanking) and do enough damage to go through every maps. Since HOT, the summoned companions only takes 5% of non targeted damages, meaning they do not die due to AOE anymore so that you can use your illusions both in defensive or offensive ways. But before you think in term of damages, do not compare yourself too much to Ele. Sure you are a spell caster but you won’t do huge lava font-like umbers. Nevertheless, nothing to be ashamed of and PvE content is mostly not challenging dps-wise.
In Fractal and raid, mesmers are sadly only considered through their elite spec, Chronomance, which is awaited to be full support. Not that you cannot fill the role of DPS (some builds are pretty good) but people will only accept you in your support role (unless you play with friends who want to try new things, even not being optimal). The support build is not really easy to play well. You want to apply perma quickness to the party and give as much as alacrity you can in order to boost others’ DPS. There are many guides to play this build you can find.
In sPvP and WvW, while I am far from being an expert I still have the impression that mesmers are always welcome and have strong builds. In Conquest, Mesmers can still pull nice party utilities and their Condi DPS is strong while allowing good defense mechanisms. In WvW I still do encounter mesmer roamers which can be deadly. In big train you will always be useful thanks to portal, group stealth, support or your personal DPS.
