So in WvW i ran into this necro who feared me for 2k in a SINGLE tick. According to the scaling he must have had around 4200 condition damage. This happened right after he got downed… Here is the fight

Bug or delay,sometimes I see +1 k burn on my engi which should only happen on guard.

Maybe death’s embrace increased its damage .. what’s odd is the first fear didn’t tick any damage so they seem to not be trait-ed for damaging fear.

Damage coefficient, unless specified, only alter direct damage. My guess would be delay.

must be a bug, the moment he fears you, you get a 979 tick (half of the 1958) and then the 1958 tick. Somehow the 2nd tick showed damage from both ticks. still weird:P

Fear has some notable oddities with its damage ticking.

For instance, with a 100% fear duration build (traits 64004, necromancer runes), the tooltips report 2.25 seconds for base duration 1 second fears, which makes no sense (should be 2 seconds exactly). I always chalked this up to a tooltip bug, or else the game just combines the duration bonuses in an inconsistent manner for fear (I believe master of terror is the culprit in this case).

But despite this, you don’t always get two ticks of fear. In testing I’ve done, opening up with reaper’s mark results in one tick of fear only, but if I hit the target with mark of blood and then reaper’s mark, I get the two ticks.

I’ll have to check again to see if the one tick scenario is somehow combining the two ticks into one massive tick.

The downed fear skill has a 2 second base duration, so it can be easily extended to 3 seconds. So it seems like the last two ticks of that fear in the video clip somehow got mushed together. It’s a bit hard to tell if it dealt the 1958 damage in one chunk or two separate chunks.

I tick 1.6 per second on people with all buffs (food, guard stacks, corruption) and ascended/legendary weapons/armor. 2.4k condition damage when fully buffed, close to 3k with enough might stacked. I could believe a 2k fear tick, terror is brutal if you’re 100% condition damage. Nothing is more satisfying than when I land my entire burst on someone (which has a bit of a wind up because there are quite a few steps involved) and top it off with terror while I watch their health go down in massive chunks (:

I just hope deaths embrace isn’t involved because than a terrormancer (fully buffed could do 2.5k every tick, for 3 seconds, on a 10 second cooldown. But thank god it isn’t.

So yea I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a bug or someting because he had no might stacks at all :/

The issue here is that the math doesn’t add up that way.

According to the wiki, fear damage scales with condition damage at a rate of 0.25, with a fixed base damage of 302. So in order to have a 2k fear tick, you would need approximately 4100 condition damage, assuming you get the +50% damage for another condition being on the opponent.

Of course, being a wiki, there are actually conflicting values on another page where it lists a base of 296 damage and a scaling of 0.40. Using these values, you could get a 2k fear tick with approximately 2600 condition damage, which is definitely possible.

I believe the first set of numbers are actually the correct ones, but I’d have to test it in game to be sure.

Regardless, it doesn’t explain why the fear damage shown in the clip ticked for 979 on the first tick and then 1958 on the next tick.
