Q:
A power necro tPvP build without a staff ?
A:
Staff is almost essential in tPVP.
- is quite fail at hitting, but when it does, it gives a decent amount of lifeforce.
- is decent for a regen if you’re in the area,
- chills, and can be used to help with kiting
- is amazing for removing and transferring conditions from everyone.
- isn’t that good imo, and is only slightly useful depending on the situation.
Don’t waste the marks, I’ve fought a few necros that just use all four at once at the start of the fight.
Staff also results in significantly more Deathshroud #1 and #4 damage (although it shouldn’t).
(1173 #1/1881 #4 Staff vs
1041 #1/1430 #4 with dagger/warhorn. Same build, no damage affecting sigils.)
Axe on the other hand, just isn’t as viable.
- does slightly more damage, and hits more often, however does not offer LF regen.
- is a decent channel
- for retal is decent, however after the recent retaliation changes, it is not as effective since its more or less a 200 damage reflect/hit.
The vulnerability stacks just doesn’t quite make up for the regen/large AOE condition cleansing staff offers.
I’d also prefer staff’s #4 skill over #4 or #5 of OH dagger/warhorn/focus.
axe + horn with power/crit build is a great but you do not really need to build for those weapon increases. they are fast enough and depending on gear hit hard enough without having to waste traits. But swapping into axe/warhorn from staff with a sigil that grants might is even better than starting a fight or having axe/warhorn as primary. with range of staff it easy to get down the aoe before they are in range and swapping. i fought not using axe in my swap weapons for using a dagger + horn. but after a few weeks i could not deny that axe +horn is just better and can be used in so many situations, especially pvp. tpvp for me on necro is all about buying time. being able to get off well of darkness and unholy feast on a thief/warrior on initial group contact is priceless and in 1v1 situations is insta-win.
Run 30-20-20. And mostly run the same abilities, may swap well of darkness to spectral walk if the melee on the opposing team is bad. With warhorn locust swarm and spectral walk you always have swiftness on demand. But with build and well of darkness adding chill to blind really screws baddies up, lol.

this thread has some good and bad discussions, its about wvw, but what the guy is doing is legit

seems the trendy new thing is to run bunker/tank spec on your necro, but still love power/crit build and rely on movement to stay alive while melting faces

Staff is a team support weapon. Use it for team support.
tPvP is a team support playtype. Use Staff in tPvP.
2+2 will always equal 4.

the most serious issue would be to not have putrid mark.
Powermancers, unless built with well of power or plague signet ( removing well of darkness+ chill trait, so indeed losing a lot of offensive effectiveness) rely only on Consume conditions as a cleanser, and against trapper rangers ( a choice that is becoming more and more common in teams), or any high condition stacking proffs, you’ll be dead meat.
Another alternative would be Oh dagger, but it’s just not viable in power builds.
overall it seems MH axe just can’t be used as it is actually.
You’d probably benefit from increasing the curve for your max damage a little more. a 30/20/20 build with staff + axe/x setup isn’t pushing the potential for what traits you’re picking up.
personally, tPvP wise, I found dagger>axe because the channeled skill does more damage and siphons health.
30/30/10 with bleeds for utilities, rely on not being seen and closing/finishing your opponent quickly. staff + dagger/dagger (in this case, dagger OH > Horn because you have dag4 for condition transfer+blind and dag5 for AoE bleed when closing the gap)
use rampager’s or carrions. BiP/lich can buff you up to relatively same stats as a powermancer situationally.

My build is 30-20-0-20-0.
I’ve actually grown bored of the glass cannon 30-30-10 condimancer, and i was trying to find a build in order to maximize wells power and AoE bombing.
Usually bunkers go down in 10-15 secs, no matters how many mitigations they have, but i’ve found fast condition stacking enemies (mesmers/engies and rangers above all) a real pain in the kitten.
That’s why i’m so reluctant to give up my staff for something else, altough having OH focus + OH warhorn in the same build would be overkill.
A friend and I have had quite a bit of success with Dagger/Focus and Axe/Dagger weapon sets.

and how do you deal against shatterkitten mesmers ?
i find mesmers extremely difficult to handle without AoE effects, and i hesitated a lot before giving up the greater marks. And now i struggle a lot more against them.
Really, i’m not being sarcastic, i just want opinions.

You want to destroy all mesmer regardless of the build or their cooldowns?
Greater Marks, Dodge Mark, 3% Life Force per Mark, 50% DS cooldown reduction.
Juggle your DS with your utilities and even a full shatter with time warp is nothing.

We actually have been dabbling with minions/wells a bit.
