Advice against Rangers?
Let them stack conditions on you, use staff 4, use blind (weapon or well) to counter their burst attack, jump into DS to fear them when they want to heal (faster then staff 5)
I run scepter/focus and staff, so rangers that wants to kite is no problem, condition rangers needs some better concentration, but staff 4 works marvelous on them, never use your heal to cure conditions vs a ranger, send them right back to them.
and save your fears as vs everyone, to interrupt their heals.
Rangers shouldn’t be a problem for a necro, remember to change utility skills if you have the chance before the battle starts, necros are very Dependant of doing this.
No need for corrupt boon vs a ranger for exampel.
Hmm.. I play a tanky ranger. Run, die, or phone a friend.
If you’re a power necro, I’ll just kite you. If you’re a condition necro, I’ll just root you and burn you down.
For all the griping they do, you’d never know that rangers are one of the best 1 on 1 classes in the game, but they are.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
Try to save Dark Path (death shroud 2) to get out of entangle if they use it, especially if u are a condition necro since it takes too long to destroy the vines.
Many rangers use entangle right after u leave DS and then they have 10 secs (untill DS is available again) to do anything they want with you (eg lay traps, use barrage) and u cant do almost anything about it other than transfer your conditions on them or fear them with staff 5
Edit: u can cleanse the immobilize and then dodge out of entangle, but u only have a 1.5 sec window to do that, which makes it hard to pull off.
Finally as Zorion said corrupt boon is not good against a ranger. But if u get stuck with corrupt boon against one use it if they use Warhorn 5 or better yet Rampage as one. If they dont u can always use it to get the self poison and transfer it to them. Its not optimal, but its better than not using CB at all.

Remove root and then dodge… yes it blows condition removal but its better then sitting in the blasted roots. Anyway roots are never an issue for me as necro. And tbh ranger dependence on los is their #1 fall. Give me 1 tree and I’ll block 80% of their damage.

Thats great too!
Especially since u can aplly conditions to their pet and use epidemic to tranfer them to the ranger even if there is no LoS
Transfer conditions if you can. If you’re not using staff or offhand dagger then you should invest in Shrouded Removal.
If you’re using dagger and get rooted, just spam the 1 key, you’ll get out in about 2 seconds. If you’re using Axe, target the roots and use the 2 button. Dark Path will get you out, too. Otherwise transfer the immobilize and dodge away before it re-roots.
I never had a problem killing rangers when my necro was power. Depending on your build you have 4-6 slows, they can’t run away forever.
Well I used to play a Tanky ranger so I know the ins and outs of them. Essentially the way to beat one is to kill his pets. Tank rangers are all BM, so killin their pet kills their dps. Don’t do it in range of their weapon though. Fake a retreat. You (should) have perma swiftness most Rangers don’t. Root/chill and run. With sufficient distance, turn, kill the pet. Wait. Ranger will send his other pet as he comes after you. Kill it. Then his pets are on a 40 second cool down. He just lost one of his sources of passive regen and condition removal (natural healing and empathic bond depend on pet being alive.).
He might run away at this point if hes smart. There is nothing you can do when a Ranger decides he wants to run away. Rangers have the second best escape techniques in the game next to Ele. (Swoop, Monarch leap, counter attack, RaO)
I’d still count that as a win.
Apparently, most of our esteemed colleagues missed the part where the OP said Tanky ranger. This would be the GS/SB or Axe Ranger that wipes conditions and keeps a constant regen going.
If you are a condition Necro, it’s best to avoid the fight. While you can win it will take so long it’s not going to be worth it. You don’t have the burst to pressure them, and you won’t have the mobility to keep up with them. The tank ranger is incredible in terms of vigor and condition cleansing. Your biggest chance is with a fearmancer, but you have to time your fears correctly.
As a power-mancer, you wait until you force two dodges, you lock him down and double well bomb him, than pressure with dagger and use fears to keep him locked out. Even in this case the fight may take a few minutes.
As a bunker killer on my tpvp team with Mininons, this ranger is still an annoyance to kill. It’s best to kill him off with a buddy.
Lorelei is spot on with his advice.

I didn’t know power rangers could do double well bombs… ;p

Red Ranger and Black Ranger can, the yellow one just dodges around infinitely and no one cares about the pink ranger :P.
Edited :P for correction
…they have so many evades with their sword.
Fight by a cliff and use spectral walk to leap off (then teleport back, naturally) as they reach the 3rd stage of their auto-attack. :P

They aren’t all beastmaster bunker, the new thing seems to be 0/30/30/ or 0/30/25/something condition/trap roamer. I think most of them are using shortbow or gs and s/d. I’ve run into lots of them in wvw and tourney this past week. I’m about 50:50 against them 1v1 which is worse than against anything else in that time. I use scepter/focus staff condition/terror build for wvw and the second build here for tpvp. You need to plan for something against entangle or it’s going to ruin your day. Keep running at them so you can at least get marks on both of you.
As power D/W I just pressure the hell out of them. It’s easy to stick to your target between golem charge (golem also applies cripple), dark pact, locust swarm, chilblains, reapers mark, doom and dark path. It’s easy to burst them down if you don’t give them time to react. Corrupt boon Rampage as One if you have it, stability turns into Fear. I like stacking staff marks on myself, switching to D/W and popping locust swarm for the aoe cripple, and then spectral grasping the ranger into all of my marks. Pop in/out of DS for fury and dagger spam for the kill. Use banshees wail during well bomb/burst to keep the pressure on.

This is SO Evil.
I love it. <3
When rangers entangle me, i enjoy using Dagger 4 and then Dark pact ^^ then bursting them down with my dagger and wells. If i ever see someone 1v1 a ranger i always step in and just attack their pet it makes me giggle
Shrouded Bomber
Give me 1 tree and I’ll block 80% of their damage.

Yeah thats how epidemic used to work. Now… meh you would take more damage sticking your head out to pop epidemic then it would do damage. Thats assuming it doesn’t fail for some osbscure reason like all other los dependent invisible projectiles. Anyway point of keeping los is to use multitude of weapon skills that hit in aoe.
If you fight on stairs and such you can apply aoe from below/sides etc. While unless ranger decides to go melee that doesn’t apply to them. If they wanna play sit in a well and cure conditions… let them. Once its done go and kill them.
And again their elite roots are the most useless ability when it comes to necro. Even your DS allows you to just leave it behind and not care. Use their pet/them to dark path out of it. Or like I said anything to remove the condition for a moment so you can dodge out.
Its too bad most pvp is on bloody grassy plains with not a kitten box in sigh. So while you can’t hid your corrupt boon, epidemic now… and a whole list of other targeted stuff will always find a way to hit some imaginary wall. Last time I did pvp daily I did not get a single succesful epidemic or corrupt boon in 3 games.
Also on subject of tank rangers… thats why kids you should love barbed precision instead of stacking condition damage and nothing else. Those barbed ticks is what gets anything as soon as little spring is out of the picture signet or not.

I should have been more clear….
I know that Epidemic now needs LoS to work but u can hit a ranger with epidemic if u have LoS to their pet and their pet is within range of the enemy player.
So u can stack conditions on their pet (and hope they dont swap it :P ) and then epidemic to get those conditions to the ranger.
Or if possible lay down marks that hit both the ranger and their pet and use epidemic on their pet to double the existing conditions on the ranger.
Finally keep in mind that a big part of the “condition removal” a ranger has is actually a condition transfer from the ranger to their pet which makes their pets even better targets for epidemic.
