Advice for a returning necro
You can try a reaper shroud/spite – blood- death magic build, with direct damage. Dagger+Warhorn in pve are great for the life steal and high damage, expecially with minions. You will never die and inflict a high amount of damage. To level up is one of the best build.
You can also try wells, they’re good against a big number of enemy.
Condition damage is also a good choice but at low levels with a random equipment it’s lesser efficent than direct damage.
When I leveled my necro to 80 (granted that was over four years ago now) I found minions to be the most fun. They provide some CC and damage-soaking that seemed to help out alot.
Once you get to 80 (if you’re even thinking that far ahead) minions tend to die down in favor of other skills depending upon what you do. I still use Flesh Golem and the Healing pet sometimes, but most others I only use on rare occasions.
Necros have a lot of different builds and combinations from minions to super-tanky to condition/direct damage to total DS usage. I would try them all and find what you like – see if you can combine more than one into some wonky super-build.
If you like minions and being tanky, use the death magic, blood magic, and soul reaping trait lines. Take the top row of traits in death magic, and experiment with the other two. You could also go with the spite traitline instead of soul reaping. If you have HoT, once you unlock reaper, pick up Rise!. Lich form also has a skill that produces more minions as well.
Weapons are personal preference for a minion build. If you want to do condi, scepter/x, if power, dagger/x (melee) or axe/x (ranged). Staff can be ok with this build as you will likely not be targeted (your minions will hold aggro), so you can stay at range easier, and the AoEs will get more use.
Keep with minions until 80, if summoning is your most comfortable style. You will want either Blood Magic’s Quickening Thirst trait or the utility Signet of the Locust for 25% movement speed increase. Use power, vitality, toughness or condition damage stat’s for equipment. Critical hit rates and bonuses are small until you hit 80 and can use exotic equipment so precision and ferocity are not recommended.
The rest is up to you.
