Aggro.
Despite what most people say and what most testing reveals, mobs aggro on the best-looking person of the group.
High toughness bumps your priority up in the aggro-forumula. To make matters worse, a lot of groups in PvE events wear berserker gear with no additional toughness or vitality, essentially volunteering you to be the group tank so they can 100b under reduced pressure.
Game balance issues like this go all the way back to release but they only apply to PvE.
Toughness is a major factor, then vitality, both of which the necro has. After that, damage ticks per second usually help bump up agro, and a condi build pumps out damage ticks like…well you know what it’s like. The mob doesn’t care if each tick is only 150, you’re doing 30+ packets of damage per second (if you hit epi, ect) and that makes you a higher threat than that warrior getting off 8 hits of 100b that might do 5k a hit. This is why CC is so important for a necro in pve, I can never stress that enough. Every weapon set we have has some form of it, and you need to utilize it to the fullest.
~Surrender fiend and you will get an easy death
~I could promise you the same…but it would be a lie…
That reminds me of the time I was in AC with a PUG after putting together my first Rabid set. We went to pay our respects to Kohler and they guy took one look at me in the back and ran past everyone else. I began waving my scepter at him, stacking long-duration bleeds, while the rest of the group rushed to pull him off of me. He still favored me even after I was downed. It was kind of scary and funny at the same time.

Yep, kinda. I wish i can use dire armor and keep crit chance for proc bleeds, so i can become ultimate pve tank
Your aggro is determined by a few things. Its been ages so I don’t recall what priority was, but Armor, Vitality, Damage dealt, Proximity, and being a Guardian all are included. If you don’t want to have aggro, generally speaking for a Rabid Necro, wait for the rest of your team to start the fight then start dropping your damage at max range.
I blame it on my sexy manskirt, and the PvPers pointing out to NPCs that focus the necro first.
