Hey fellow Necromancers, I want to know if I’m really going to be missing out when I’m done leveling.

I started playing about early August. I started off with a elementalist but I got kind of bored of it and stopped at level 46 (I still have it).

I then went and started a Necromancer character and he has since become my main. I really enjoy playing him and using the AOE’S on Staves, certain Wells, Death Shroud and some minions occasionally. I have been using a Dagger and Horn and a staff as a switch to use the marks. At the moment, he is level 77 and I intend to get him to level 80..

However I have defintley heard some bad things about Necromancers. For example, I have seen several people say they almost NEVER get accepted into Dungeons. Can anybody explain why? I haven’t done any dungeons yet but I would like to experience them all and possibly get armor and weapons from them. I’ll probably join a guild and they’ll most likely be more lenient towards necromancers I hope. I’d still like an explanation though.

Secondly, How are Necromancers in PVP and WvW? I have looked around and seen some mixed opinions on them. Some people say they are really good and some say really bad. How would you say you do in PVP with your Necromancer? I haven’t experienced any pvp yet but I’d like to once I reach level 80. I will probably be a “powermancer” and use things that increase power like soldiers/berserkers and runes that increase power. Throughout leveling, I have been choosing armor and weapons that primarily favor to power and has been working out really well so far.

Finally, gear wise I think I will be okay but would still like a few tips. I plan on just buying a lvl 80 Exalted set since it’s Exotic off the trading post and adding Runes to them. I’d like some tips on Runes but I’ll probably add runes that increase power or have some other effects I’m not too sure of.

I have 38 Laurels at the moment. Should I wait until I get 2 more and buy an Ascended amulet with an infusion? If so what infusion? If not, what else?

For weapons, I found a staff (forgot the name) that’s a level 80 exotic off the trading post for 7-8 gold which seems fine. Not sure what sigil to add to it though. Also going to buy a Exotic dagger and horn for about 4-5 gold each? Still not sure of sigils to add.

If somebody can also give me a rundown of how superior runes and sigils work that would be great. Do I need 6 runes of the same type for the 6 effects? or does 1 rune give 6 effects?

Thanks in advance.

It’s really not as big a deal as people make it out to be. Necros will not get accepted into any speed runs for a dungeon, but I’ve never had a problem getting a party when I wanted.

PvP, it’s a mixed bag. For tPvP, we’re in an odd spot. Our hardest of hard counters are less popular now, but we still have to effectively justify two spots on a team. Some teams find it worthwhile, others, not so much. sPvP, necros aren’t so popular, but there’s nothing wrong with it. In a bit of a rough spot when dealing with Longbow rangers, but otherwise, generally fine.

WvWvW: well, it’s called the *G*uardian *W*arrior *E*lementalist *N*ecromancer meta for a reason. Roaming is tough, but doable if you’re careful. Necros work really well in small-man havoc groups, though.

Find a good group of people or a guild and you’ll be fine man. I don’t pve much but it’s not that we can’t do the content just that other classes typically bring group support along with dps, all we really have is dps so don’t try building a support build.

I would say PvE you can make it work but it’s not ideal, pvp is fine if you’re not a baddie, WvW is in a really good spot for necros.

Every class has their Chicken Littles. If you like the class then you should play it.

in wvw you are all sweet even tho they killed your purpose a bit after the lich wells nerf

pvp I would say you are without a doubt one of the easiest classes to kill you have 0 defences cc will literally prevent you from using your class mechanic or doing anything really, again no defences at all… oh and anything you do will require way more effort to stay alive then the other classes.

other classes spread condis faster and easier then you and have faster cast times on their defences then you. it will always be a down hill fight. your only hard cc has 2 ways to get out of it and can also be prevented

pve lol! no chance if you are looking for people that care but with friends you will be ok but that’s about it

Necro hasnt lost its purpose since the lich nerf….. Using lich in wvw only works when the people you are playing against are just awful. It’s a great way to say hey I’m a necro I’m an easy kill!

At what point can’t you use deathshroud when getting cced?

We spread condis fine epidemic.

We have other hard CC besides fear. And we have soft cc.

You won’t be limited by your class for PVP. Any class is viable depending on the team set up and personal skill level. A skilled player can make any class viable at top tier pvp.

As I guess you know. Conditions are ‘group wide’. A solo necro can easily hit cap, so any other condi types, your just removing damage from the group.

Anyways, as you say power necro that dosen’t have that issue.

The big problems for PvE wise tho.

Minions each count as a extra player, and are stupid. So they will be ‘upscaling’ elites/champs/and world challenges as tho your a group of players. There’s dungeons where they’ll spread the fire over the group and other annoying bits. Even Mega world boss in volcano, ya’ll prob spend more time being frustrated at your little guys taking lava bath than doin there job.

Attrition is another big’ie. No regen for dodge, no block/invul.
Very little stability.
Only really ‘bursts’ of blind if spec’ed that way. Your chills and poisons, any ‘real’ monster just ignores anyway. — Flip side, new Unholy Sanct helps here, there’s also food buffs that give you regen for dodge.

Other’s can’t heal you in DS, it shows your life bar as life force, so your constantly scarring the party looking like your dieing. (And 100% of heals thrown to save you are wasted)

Projectiles shoot over roots – so ya’ll have to drop out of litch/DS & pull out a dagger to brake out

Support – this is prob the big one.
Staff used to let us pull ALL condition off ourself, and anyone in the circle. That got ninja nerfed and is 3 condi’s off us, none off group/circle.
The ‘condi to boon’ other role we had, got nerfed to not all of them.
Transfusion is nice for healing group but as your in DS, it skips you.
Healing on leaving DS not soo sexy as there’s a CD for DS on entry AND on exit. (Sounds silly, but removing the new CD on exit, would let your ‘time’ your save heals easier) It’s def miles behind a guard dodging and healing people.
While we can pump out LOTS of regen. It will VERY VERY often be replace with a shorter and much weaker per tick heals.

Anyway, TLDR; You need to be a ‘good’ necro to keep up with a ‘crappy’ War/Guard/etc etc. You have no ‘role’ or ‘need’ for the group.
It’s not like you can’t do it, ya’ll just never be ‘sort after’.

snip .

while I don’t main a necro (main a warrior) I do play and enjoy necro. in pve ugh well not sure X D to be honest I just play what I want and tend to stick with friends so i’m not stuck with those kind of people too often (although I get furious when I am esp when they don’t know what their talking about sigh)

in pvp however necro’s can be rather fearsome epidemic for instance can be deadly stack pleny of condtions on one guy hit epidemic you just nailed the entire group HARD.

however I personally use the powermancer. oh boy… you’ll struggle in general with cc which at times regaurdlss of how good you are can at times make you utterly helpless (personal experience I was in battle of khylo got hit with a tred and knocked back go up before I could respond got cced then cced by a engi then treb again. you’ll lack stun breaks and have virtually NO access to stable exception being foot in the grave which gives around 50% time if you swap in to death shroud.

you’ll need to make proper use of death shroud learn it love it!. it helps by adding some tankiness to the necro and life blast can hurt. however if you do go melee you need to realize that if things go bad your out of luck. necros have very poor ability to disengage. however all 3 elites are rather useful. flesh golem acts as extra dps and a body bag with some cc. while your plague form can aid in support (indirectly) of your allies by spaming blind in a large aoe.

lich got nerfed and I don’t know how hard it got hit but the auto attack is DEVESTATING. although it is also slow and kinda predictable. (it’s actually hard to hit a running target at times lol)

simply playing a necro can be a Very fun experience in pvp but it can also be one hell of a frustrating one as well. I’ve had moment’s where I lolled at a warrior who saw his health vanishing freaking out using zerk stance to save himself against my … poor low dps necro <(stigma) and died laughing as his health just keeps vanishing. or as a group.

necros focus on preventing escape through their cripple chill. however fear can be funny and absolutely devastating if used at the right time in the right spot you can literally fear someone off a edge of a cliff instant kill. (won’t work on mobs)

if you want to main a necro your going to need to get some tough hide do your dungeons with friends consider joining a friendly mature pve guild but( ofc use power not condtions for pve.)

their is nothing wrong with using a necro in pve if you know what your doing and built properly. however some people will always be elitest and that’s not going to change. so you need to fight back persay by surrounding your self with friendly mature people so your fun isn’t ruined.

runes will work like this
the 1 2 3 4 5 6 shows how many types of runes on your armor of that type you have. for the 4 effect you need 4 runes on your armor your wearing.

if you have major runes do not add with superior but you can get the effects of both
2 major will give the 2 effect 4 superior would give 4. think that’s how it works.

one thing that can help a power mancer in spvp is to swap into death shroud pre engagement use ds 2 as it’s about finshed casting swap out of ds and you can hit your opponent for a few bleeds and chill them. more importantly however it acts as a small cd long range teleport to who you hit. easily avoided though.

60026 or 62006 are you staple power mancer set up depeind on preference.

with reaper might training of the master OR axe training and close to death being options out of the power line
2 in pre gives more crit chance (if you prefer) reaper’s precion gives life force on crit (youll crit a lot) but this is really VERY minor.
0
2 dagger mastery once again kinda minor as the only 2 skills that you’ll really see use of will be dark pact (a immobile) and life siphion. truthfully I think this is better then the other option. but the cd on both skills are still rather long in my personal opinion don’t expect to use them much in a fight and both are single target skills though they can be handy it’s hard to say if the cd reduction alone is worth it (personal opinion) really it just seems better then the pre trait unless you want to try get over 50% crit.

6 soul reaping just like power is bread and butter typically
you want vital persistence near to death deathly perception (50% chance to crit with ds skills i.e. life blast)
