Are Necros as bad off as the forums suggest?
Point taken. You forgot Unholy Feast, but it still doesn’t tip the scales much in favor of the necro.
I picked the most absurd example of boon removal to counter for dramatic effect. In reality, I would say we are just behind mesmer, and really not that many mesmers are going to run boon removal on shatter, and most are going to use phants instead of just keeping up sword clones.
The biggest problem is that boons are often in fractals reapplied so frequently, or are like perma-stability and not-removable.
What would be nice about boon conversions in this game, is that if I flipped a boon, it should lockout that boon from being applied for say 5 seconds. That would really favor flipping instead of removing.
Boons being reapplied doesnt happen too often in fractals. Its more of an issue in regular dungeons (golem in coe or butcher in hotw). Necro spinal shivers is enough for the ettin and rabsovich in fractals. Mesmer however has way more options, either burst aoe (null field/shatter) or sustained single target boon removal (sword auto, sword clones and phantasmal disenchanter). And then theirs arcane thievery to steal the jellyfish’s 25 might stacks and copy them to your party.
Anyway if it was more important to remove boons in fractals then you would see necros more often because they have better aoe and dps than mesmers. Problem is the only scale where boon removal and condi damage really is worth while is when you get to scale 70-80 fractals. Which is being removed and they have said they are reducing difficulty of 30-50 which is a bit of a joke.
