This animation change upsets me greatly. My asura’s AA was so lively and unique, and now it’s just… bland. Swing right. Swing left.
You took away what I feel really makes the asura attacks feel so different. Please change it back Anet!
as much as my sylvari’s new anim upsets me, that asura one hurts me more. Like… why would you change something that amazing? Snarf balance. Things should look cool first and foremost. Balance brings blandity.

The new animation, it looks so lame and weak … there is 0 momentum in it.

Wow, the difference is so glaring. I can’t believe this change was made. The original AA looks so much more animated and fierce. This new one looks like the player is either completely disinterested in the fight, swinging underwater, or both. Especially the asura. How can Anet muck up the AA for the race that’s supposed to be the most animated? It’s so boring I can’t stand it!
Aesthetically this is such a step backwards. We have such awesome, dynamic-looking attack animations across all the other weapons, and then to see this is just… ew. Really? Can’t the devs fix the technical issue and keep the original animation? I can’t get over how bland and lifeless the new auto-attack is.
Please bring back these beautiful animations for our axe AA, Anet!
The necromancer’s axe animation was taken from the warrior’s axe auto-attack chain, which wasn’t a bad idea, since the warrior’s chain is: one hit -> two hits -> three hits. And since the necromacer’s auto-attack always was two hits, it was obvious to use a part from the warrior’s animation. (Because of this, I could make this beautiful recordings ;-D)
The new animation was taken from skills like Scorpion Wire or Spectral Grasp. Of course they do not fit as a weapon’s attack animation.

Holy crap, more than anything i’m just impressed that people actually use axe on a necro. The only thing it’s good for is slowly stacking vulnerability and i guess you can burst with 2, daggers are better in pretty much every way (if you spike might first they get a lot more burst too because of how well they scale with power) except for an elongated fight that doesn’t really exist. The only fights that long are in the open world and they’ve already got max vuln stacks up 9 times out of 10.

A very good kiting longbow/greatsword ranger reminded me the other day why I always used axe instead of dagger.
Momentum is important in my gaming experience.
I’m sure Anet understand and, soon or later, will put back the great old animation.
But for now, my eyes have suffered enough. Frostfang > Stash.
I use Axe outside of PvP where I play Celestial or MM depending on my mood
I run a wellomancer D/W and A/F. I sometimes switch to A/F to stack on some vun with Focus 4 and a quick LF boost with Ghastly claws then back to Dagger. Sometimes I jump into DS until my weapon swap cooldown finished then back to Dagger. BUT AXE 1 is so bad I never use it. I sometime use axe3 and focus 5 but it’s kinda sad that the primary attack on a weapon is so useless.
My suggestions to improve axe 1 is to add another stack of vulnerability so in 2 slashes you’d add 3 stacks and increase the duration to 10sec instead of 7. Possibly make it a 3 combo attack that adds vuln and weakness on the 3rd attack. Also increase the range to 750. I’d be ok with the crappy damage if it did its job of reducing the effectiveness of the enemy.

I bet it is placebo but i SWEAR my axe animation before that f2p release patch thing yesterday looked slightly different. Now i make a full swing and then draw the axe back in a short snap instead of the one-motion weirdness i looked at yesterday… was my animation just glitched or did they in fact slightly tweak it? The way it looks currently on my sylvari isn’t actually that bad.

No it’s about everything wrong with Axe skill1. Just on top of the crappy functionality it no had a terrible animation as well. Its like a slap in the face.

Is your toon male? if so, i think they haven’t gotten nearly as short an end of the stick as females.
Pretty sure the female one hasn’t changed a whit =(

Thanks to recent skills improvements, I tried to wield the axe again … the horror.
One minute later and my eyes were hurting. No chance. The AA animation is really horrible.

I’ve been using it for 2.5 years relatively well. Its pretty decent now, needs work yes but not that much.
I like it. With an offhand dagger I use 1 and 2 for a ranged option until I can get back in the mix with Greatsword. When I am ready to charge back in I throw down 3 and 5, holding onto 4 in case I need to get rid of some conditions which is never really.

That sounds great in theory but were you in PvE?

I use it in sPvP about 50% of the time. It can be useful but also worthless.
- I like to make players think I’m horrible by distracting them with Axe 1 tickles.
- Axe 2 is okay for stealthing targets or baiting dodges. Mainly baiting dodges to land a Dark Pact right after.
- Axe 3’s uses are obvious, but not very important
- Dagger 4 is really the reason to take it. Everyone knows about Condi bursting after Staff 4, but no one can keep track of Dagger 4.
You have to reallllly try to make Axe work.
I’ve been using Axe/dagger and Dagger/warhorn in pvp lately and axe is working good for me in a MM build, but it still doesn’t seem strong enough compared to how useful staff marks are. The axe trait, skill 1 and animations need more work. We need some on target aoe damage and axe skill 1 should be changed back to its original animation but make it a two hit attack with more damage. I know the original animation won’t be used again because it could be canceled out, but if axe skill 1 gets changed to a skill with a two hit chain, we could get the old animation back and have a better auto attack.

Too true. I’ve been enjoying axe a bit but hot kitten is the AA annoying to use.
Ive been trying it out more. Because its kitten useful when kiting the golems on aether fractal. But after just doing some calculations. Its still a totally terrible weapon.
And the animation certainly doesnt help.
I’m torn.
It clearly does more damage than the /laugh emote, but it doesn’t have the same psychological effect of the /laugh emote. I just don’t know which one to use in a PvP fight when I’ve used up all my skills.

I’ve been trying it again after ages as well. With Reaper taking away our best ranged option I sometimes felt “forced” to take it. I don’t feel comfortable yet being in melee 100% of the time in certain fractals and for some events/hero points on the new maps, but it still just feels so bad using this weapon in PvE =/

Fair enough. I don’t really use axe on my necro, but I’ll admit that it needs work in just about every department.

The current animation looks like you’re trying to gently brush their hair or something, especially for humans.
Robert asked for suggestions a while back regarding the animation. So hopefully he won’t forget about this.

I think axe #3 is ok right now tbh, but #1 and #2 desperately need some more work.
Imo, the auto-attack should do more damage since it is single target and #2 either needs to do more damage or channel much faster.
Edit: Just compare Ghastly Claws with Rapid Fire and tell me that this is ok =P

I found axe useless in HoT, by the way.
Slow vulnerability application in an environment where vulnerability is grossly overused and greatsword can give more than 10 stacks in less than 2 sec.
A channel that does only a bit of direct damage and is mainly used for generating LF.
A cripple that does not cripple.

Sorry for necroposting (yay^^), but the new horrible animation still, and we have no answer if someone from ANet is taking care about that or not, or even notice our post.

why not discuss both?
Axe#1 : very low damage, very slow vuln application.
Axe#2: low damage for a single target, channel skill.
Axe#3: low damage, this SHOULD be blast finisher.
Axe#1 could change from 2x Vulnerability (7s) to 4x Vulnerability (3.5s)
Same cap, reach it faster.
Besides the horrendous animation, I don’t think we need more vuln application on Axe #1. It wouldn’t do much (at least in PvE), because vuln gets thrown around like candy at a carnival parade anyways these days.
What it needs in my opinion is either simply more damage or maybe a rework into being a chained skill, with the current vuln application on the first two hits and a different effect on the third hit, e.g. corrupting a boon.
Then it would be comparable to the third hit of the mesmer sword auto-attack, trading off the damage boost when the target has no boons (Mind Spike) for boon corruption instead of just boon removal.
