Best PvE necro build?
^ Brazil’s build
I really like those 2 builds.
Only sad part is. Your DPS is about 1/2 that of an engineer. And engineer isn’t even the highest DPS in the game. (Granted it’s a bit harder to get the max dps out of an engineer; but even facerolling you’ll out dps a necromancer :P)
Which would be OK if we brought something else. But all we bring really is the life steal, which isn’t enough. Especially considering the top DPS classes also bring a ton of team buffs and smoke/fire/water fields and blast finishers.
As an almost pure PvE necro, the most common builds I see in dungeons (outside of condition) are the dagger build and the DS build. Variations of both builds can be found on metabattle.com with specializations, rotation explanation, etc.
Dagger build is fairly self-explanatory, berserker’s gear, Dagger/Focus and Warhorn in second weapon slot, use Warhorn 5 and Focus 4 while spamming dagger AA.
The DS build also uses similar weapons (although the axe can be used as a second main-hand if you really want to) and the goal is to be in DS as much as possible, this ones nice because Valkyrie gear (Power, Vitality, Ferocity) is viable because deathly perception (SR grandmaster trait) can boost your crit to nearly 100% which means minimal investment in precision and more survivability.
Either one does very well, or you can make up one and see how it does :p like I said, deeper explanations for both those builds can be found on metabattle.
I notice im actually Running A Hybrid Build right now , Mix cond/zerk with axe/scepter.
Should i maybe just wait for the expansion to see if new and better options come up???
thanks again every one.

Don’t you want Staff secondary for DS build to grab that extra weapon damage? So like Dagger/Warhorn (or focus) or maybe Axe then staff secondary to swap to for DS periods.

Yes, you used to be able to take the axe and the axe trait and the difference between axe and staff for DS damage was minimal. Now you have to take staff because the axe trait only effects axe skills (Please revert Anet). Commenting on the thread topic. D/F and D/W is the best dps weapon set when your party is stacking might and other buffs for you, d/w and staff Life blast spam is better when your team doesn’t. Either way, both of those builds are subpar compared to every other class in dungeons.
extra dodges, real stability, mobility skills,
burst skills, sustain, or good support. GG ANET.

Staff is a great weapon. I prefer it to having the other offhand swap.
Like you said good base damage for wells and shroud.
Nobody ever talks about the utility which I will list:
- Regen spam with mark of blood.
- AoE chill.
- AoE weakness (putrid mark is a blast finisher)
- AoE blind with wells
- AoE retaliation with well of blood
- Condi transfer
- Fear (yes you can actually use it, just go outside the stack after the mobs get in and you just fear them against the corner)
So almost every fight I start with mark of blood → chillblains → putrid mark which really cuts down the initial damage the party takes as the mobs first engage.
The best build for a necromancer in GW2 is (in no particular order):
Elementalist
Mesmer
Guardian
Warrior
Engineer
Thief
Ranger
I am soooo frustrated right now with my necromancer, I’m ready to give up on it altogether. It’s OK (or, at least, you may not notice it’s NOT OK) if all you do is play by yourself doing map completions/event farming/ect …but once you play pretty much any other part of this game or with any other profession, it will become painfully and frustratingly clear just how NOT OK we really are.
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend Necro to anyone right now …unless they were my worst enemy.
Full healing power Transfusion jesus necro
I don’t get the “Necro has no damage” argument anymore. It competes solo with an ele’s combo (who can’t sustain damage after Fire Grab) and while stacking Vampiric Aura with other life siphon sources, your DPS and sustain skyrocket. On an average high tier Fractal comp, Vampiric Aura adds 45 damage to each hit each ally does – including all hits from Ice Bow, rapid attacks such as Hundred Blades, Life Transfer, Guardian Symbols, Wells (which should be trained to siphon already adding to the damage), fire fields, and all other damaging fields. My fractal group calculated that Vampriric Aura alone adds a 14% average full-party DPS boost, and the front loaded damage of wells combined with Signet of Vampirism (which adds nearly 8k damage by itself to a target) competes with that of an extra Ice Bow, and you can attack with 11.8k auto attack chains during that time (your wells combo should be doing upwards of 41k over 5 seconds).
Yet, every day I find elitists who write off necro as “unusable” in PvE, despite our damage being superior to Mesmer in PvE (though we lack the utility Mesmer brings).

I would love if this was the case.
But I’m putting more faith into the damage calculators, which show necromancers struggling doing roughly 40-60% the dps of the top DPS classes (Thief / Ele / Warrior). And even though we’re not too far behind say Rangers and Guardians, we still fall majorly short, because we bring very little to the group other than Vampiric Aura.
Also I’d love to see your calculators (or even just rough math) for VA adding 14% dps on top of your entire party.
Because that would practically mean VA doubles the necro’s dps in a party format.
It depends on how you look at damage. There is theoretical and practical. What can you actually pull off. That’s a value that varies from player to player based on skill, but theoretical gives you an idea of potential. When you look at potential mesmer actually very highly outshines the necro in damage. It’s in practical where necro rotations are actually pretty easy (for power builds, as I understand it maxing condi is a bit troublesome), meaning you get a practical dps close to your potential. Mesmer on the other hand has all these issues in actual gameplay with their big damagers dying so easily (illusions).
So Engi is mentioned here, potential dps is through the roof, I’ll get back to you when I see a player actually pull it off. That said you can play at like 60% efficiency and just toss well aimed grenades around with an occasional bigger attack and you’ll still be outshining a necro by a decent amount.
And, well, that’s what it comes down to. While necro isn’t horrible and much closer when you actually start playing, they’re still behind by a notable amount.
Necro has Unblockable AoE and impressive cleaves – second best only after Elementalist. I main elementalist and have played all classes in all kinds of runs: bad pugs, super pugs, casual runs, semi casual elitists, super elitist hard core runs, etc. From my experience, the simplicity in rotations and mechanics plus necro’s robust DPS/HP makes it really easy to achieve at least 80% efficiency of the class full potential.
Necro really shines in casual runs and semi-casual runs – like a 35-45 min fractal 50 pug run. When played right, they survive well through bad fractal pugs. For group support, they give out decent vuln and protection up time. They also give plenty of CC that can be used to prevent damage – in lieu of aegis, reflect and stability.
When I play necro, I don’t even feel as much frustrated as playing ranger and thief!
