Anet has already proven to us that they don’t want us to survive big bursts of damage, given the change to DS in the 7/23 patch. This is in addition to our lack of blocks, vigor, etc. that would also help with avoiding single-shot damage spikes.
So since we can no longer mitigate damage in that way, how about reconsidering allowing us to heal our actual health pools while in Death Shroud? I can’t be the only one annoyed by the fact that we have an entire trait line dedicated to healing/vampirism, and yet it can’t be used in conjunction with our class mechanic. It still wouldn’t address the burst damage issue, but it would make us a lot more sustainable in longer fights. Aren’t we supposed to be the masters of attrition? LF generation is still unreliable enough that we can’t always count on DS to save us, even with the recent set of buffs to it.
If the devs are so worried about this being unbalanced they can just tweak the healing numbers a bit. Make it so by default healing is only 50% effective while in DS, and then add a trait that increases this percentage. Maybe that’s not the most elegant solution but I’m sure the devs can think of something.

Hell I don’t even need that. I just want my Blood Minion, and traited Siphons and MAYBE my regens to go through. Kinda kittenty our “defense” does us more harm than good by blocking our heals.

Aiming a little high aren’t we? I’d start with siphons only, then re-evaluate.
Give us the ability to heal while in DS already! It would make necro in WvW so much better and it would be worthwhile to stay in DS.

No… I wouldn’t say so. Right now DS can effectively (even flashing it) eat a heal from Blood fiend who can already be killed, evaded, ranged, LOSed, etc. You don’t design a game with poor mechanics to fix the issue of too much healing (IE DS absorbing heals, which our healing isn’t even that powerful), you balance numbers around mechanics so you don’t have abilities that make you shoot yourself in the foot so to speak. The whole DS and the way its designed right now is just that, poorly designed.
Even if we did not have access to to our own heals it really bites to have no access to any heals provided by our parties and groups.
In a dungeon the timely use of DS can punish you for missing a water field and the same thing in WvW or pvp although more so in WvW where larger groups offer more resources.
I would like to see more testing but it seems like our heal skill goes into a cool down out of DS now too which makes using it properly as a defensive tool even more difficult if there are plenty of enemies around to CC you.

One day, DS will be great. But not today. It’s a work-in-progress. One that almost completely functions differently than its original design concept. Some things work, other do not. Some things are too strong, others are too weak. Trial and error when searching for the right balance. You don’t run before you walk, don’t walk before you crawl, don’t jump straight to healing in DS without testing to see if it (in this case, siphons) would throw balance out of whack. If you do, then which collateral option will the necro use to pay for such a thing? What kind of hit will the necro take to gain straight healing in DS?
Actually, I would start with just making the Regeneration boon work while in death shroud, then evaluate from there. Siphoning numbers are quite low, so they wouldn’t change anything balance-wise anyhow. Regeneration, however, is very common and comes very easily both from self (Mark of Blood, Reaper’s Touch), and allies (too many to list) as well as providing numbers that are low, but still significant.
