Big difference between building for small scale and building for large scale battles. I have done my share of small scale stuff back when the game launched and for a long time, so now I am focused on the large scale and playstyle.

I have also been around long enough to have the opportunity to extensively playtest a large variety of builds, most of which you will find links to in these forums, and finally arrived at my own hybrid concoction.

Some but not all shortcomings I have found in the other cookie cutter builds posted here on forums were as follows:

- Condi builds – makes your necro completely impotent when ranging siege, doors and most importantly, when fighting other organized groups that have a ton of cleansing.

- Power builds – makes your necro weak against melee trains via lack of sustained pressure and does not provide support for your team mates. Yes, they cleanse condis very often, but its hard for them to keep on cleansing while being pounded on by other sources.

There are also a lot of misconceptions about necros, for example having a high crit rate for condis to proc. In group play your crit chance is calculated “per target” hit (tagged), so even with very low crit rates your condis will proc like crazy, you don’t need to waste too much in traits or gear to have good procs. Only time you need it higher is if its 1v1 or very small scale. But even with my unoptimized build I still win 1v1 a lot, but have a harder time going 1vX then other builds.

The build I currently run is optimal for running in a very organized group of 20-30 (25) optimal, and wiping map blobs, of 60+. The fights are insane and super fun. However, the build also does well in any group of 5+, below that, need to start adjusting and switching stuff out.

My current gear is about 50% carrion, chest and legs are PVT, earrings are knights, rings, amulet is rabid, backpiece is carrion. Although I do carry a full dire armor set on me and a full zerker set for PvE as well. The axe/warhorn set also seems to do better in 1v1 and roaming, while the scepter/dagger performs better in group combat.

I tend to use staff, scepter/dagger, or staff axe/warhorn, depending how much mobility I want or if I want to swing more towards condi or power set.

Build is something like this, but not exactly, since as I stated, I adjust it on the fly as needed:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNAW7YjMad6Zaib8bKCJFY7aTK624gU4ecFVYYA-jEDBIhBCXEmWAm8OQpmRMDNrpoBpMqIasKZAKlYaYJVHLySBso0I-w

It appears weak on the builder but it really isnt. Due to the stacks and buffs my condi damage goes up to around just under 1600s, while power around 2800 without might or other player buffs. The low crit rate is largely irrelevant since during engagements I have fury on most of the time provided by my team mates and all my procs, including spinal shivers and sigils have ICDs on them. With the amount of targets I hit my uptime on both is already maxxed out so going any higher on the crit is a complete waste.

I do have a fairly high amount of toughness and vitality because due to my playstyle I tend to run with frontline a lot. Usually I will plop down well of corruption and/or well of power then go plague on the hammer train right up with the front line, if you play backline more you can scale down from that as I do sometimes.

Also, on large zerg fights I switch out my food, go away from condi duration entirely and go power/condi dmg food instead since condi uptime is useless due to amount of cleansing, so this performs much better. I should add, my alt off-hand set, axe is PvT and warhorn is zerker.

I tend to use well of power and spectral walk for stun breakers, but will often switch out spectral walk if I go more backline for spectral wall or well of suffering to add CC or melt trains quicker.

The well of power with the prot buff is a critical tool for groups while plunging through AOE fields such as chokes, multiple AC fire etc., it helps a great deal.

DS I use mainly for the extra life bar when all my defenses are on CD, though the life transfer isnt too bad, I see some nice green numbers ranging between 1300-2300 per pulse x5 (due to proximity) as I strafe enemy line. Usually I get between 20-40k heal out of it, unless like I stated above, I am using it to tank in which case I save my life force for that purpose, not for transfer.
