Dagger fun
Use warhorn or focus as your offhand instead. Personally, I recommend warhorn. Each hit of the Locust Swarm gives life force, procs siphons, and stacks cripple, so people have a harder time getting away from your #1 spam. Use the 4 to interrupt heals.
I don’t understand why people go D/D on necro, really. Dual wielding daggers is cool thematically, but just from reading the skills you can tell that mainhand dagger is for a power build, and offhand dagger is for a condition build.
Using the dagger mainhand can be a little boring, because its most efficient to just spam autoattack.
However, there are some other things that can make it way more fun! If you use Wells as your utility skills, you can use dagger #3 to immobilize an enemy and then drop all your wells on him for best effect. However this is only really useful in PvP, because in PvE there are usually a lot of enemies and you cant immobilize them all.
Also like lettuce said, try the focus or warhorn. Warhorn is just for the speed boost (#5, Locust Swarm) and it cripples making it harder for enemies to get away. The #4 is a daze, all it does it prevent enemies in front of you from using abilities for a couple seconds.
The focus has a bouncing attack that grants vulnerability, while healing you, the the #5 chills and removes boons.
Using either of these weapons can really add a lot of variety to the dagger gameplay
It’s kinda a hard topic.. since Necromancers are Scholar-typed classes, and the only other class to compare a #1’s Chain is to a Thief.
Dagger off-hand #4 is perfect for throwing away the Bleed stacks you get from Blood_is_Power, or for the plain ol shrugging off conditions that come in your way. They both stay at a great point of power because it has a range of 900, making it a good-to-go both at melee and long range.
Dagger #5 too serves it’s purpose both in melee fights and/or long-range skirmishes. It both weakens and bleeds numerous opponents, but only one of them is in your favor depending on your build (pro-Condition or pro-Power). Someone who uses it for the Bleed won’t be seeing the Weakness help him/her as much as when he/she is in melee range with a Dagger main-hand.
the Necrotic combo on Dagger main-hand is great, but really, it needs us to be in melee range to deal it. It’s how you can use it’s #2 and #3 to get it done (on players) that count. A Scholar profession is especially good at pinning a target down the “yes-you’re-screwed” hole.
(This “theory” being crafted only in a sense where -getting- into melee range is either counter-productive for you [like, against a Soldier class] , or just plain avoided by your foe [fellow Scholars, select Adventurers].)
But, in PvE.. I don’t think it can get more exciting than using #3 when the enemy switches aggro on you, and #2 to fill in the damage that you cannot when your HP drops too much below the comfort zone. #4 and #5 serves the same purposes in both modes.. don’t they all!
I’ve recently switched over to using a power staff & dagger/warhorn build and am loving it. I don’t shy away from getting into melee fights with soldier classes. I run in with Locust Swarm to help build my life force and add extra damage, pop Dark Pact to root them, drop my two wells, and start going to town with Dagger #1. Wail of Doom from Warhorn is also great for interrupting or just preventing your opponent from attacking for 2 seconds.
You will be build lifeforce quickly so you can easily pop into DS to absorb some damage.
I have a love-hate relationship with MH dagger.
Love the damage
Hate that 1 is the only thing effective to use
Kind of boring to just spam 1. But using it with Well of suffering and corruption makes up for it somewhat. Would like to see 2 at least not be a dps loss when you use it, otherwise it’ll remain situational.
Well, since we are in topics of Daggers.. What are the best dagger skins? I can not for the life of me find 1 that appeals to me as a necro

Beaded Spike or Steam dagger.
I have an 80 sylvari berserker thief and i skinned dual beaded spikes on celestial dye armor. i look like an icy reaver angel.
Malfactryn just screams Necro. Of course, it’s best for an off-hand dagger since it has Rabid stats.
I love dagger/dagger… for getting from point A to point B (quickening thirst), and pve.
Other than that its staff, forms, and traits. :p
alts: Fangyre (Necro), Hardrawk (Ele);
Jade Quarry

I really like the Pirate and Bandit weapons, personally.
Dagger/warhorn is nice, atleast in PVP situations since NPC mobs are up in your face anyway. Dark Pact followed by a 3 second daze does in most opponents, if you can manage to land it. Gives you all the time in the world to spam your auto-attack and wells on a static object.
For my lifeleech build, dagger 2 is very nice and is like a second healing skill on a low cooldown. Since it’s a channel skill, it works on thieves while they are cloaking.
As for the dagger skin I use the Krait ripper which looks more like a sickle.

I’m gonna try and make a necromancer build similar to the D/D ele.
Still exploring the possibilities though.
I prefer the mystic dagger skin, it costs a bit but it still looks decent and I like the electricity coming off of it.
Also does the necromancer not have any good healing skills? I just find ’m all to be so weak…

I find the healing skill which removes all conditions and gives extra healing for each one pretty good myself. It’s like a better version of the warrior’s Mending. With certain skills you can stack conditions on yourself, so with you can potentially get a lot out of it.
Especially nice in WvW where you get spammed with a ton of conditions. Sometimes gives me 10k+ healing on 25 second cooldown.
