Hey I was looking for help in a Deathshroud / Spectral build in WvW. Would probably use for small battles. I was thinking either 30/10/0/0/30 and go full Berserkers OR Valkyrie armour and go 20/20/0/0/30. I would be using mostly spectral skills. I need help deciding also if I should go Staff & Dagger/Warhorn or Staff & Axe/Focus or even Dagger/Warhorn and Axe/focus. I want to know first off if this is even viable. Any help would be appreciated!

Oh yea, its definitely viable. I tried it, and you do at least 3k damage on autoattack (considering you have the correct gear). When I used Dagger/Focus, I could build my DS pretty quickly.

careful with that type of build , ive got 30/0/0/10/30 , got quite literlly 2 shot by a thief (from 100% LF pool DS , literallly 1 shot that) , only saw him do 2 attacks , 1st was from stealth which destroyed the DS in 1 shot , the other just flatout took me out before i could react. DEF DO NOT USE BERSERKS cause thats what i was running gearwise as well , so yea….lol so great how a 2nd healthbar works in defense XD

Using Full Zerker gear will get you 2 shotted no matter what class you are.

I roam solo/small group occasionally with a spectral/DS build in full zerker, and its glassy, but it’s not impossible to do and it’s also a lot of fun. It’s not all bad, but you really need to pick your fights because once committed to an engagement there’s no going back. I typically run 30/10/0/0/30 Dagger/Warhorn & Axe/Focus. It’s definitely not a good spec for anything other than small group roaming – you will explode trying to use this in a zerg.

If you get ganked by a thief there’s little to be done about it. I take Weakening Shroud, and if you respond quickly enough it can often buy you enough time to do something about it. Chill of Death and Close to Death are insane at adding pressure if you can deal with the initial toe-to-toe and get them toward low HP. It’s a risky set up to play, and there are classes and specs that will be often too difficult to do much about, but that’s rock paper scissors for you.

Life Transfer with 100% crit and 100% damage is enough to get a glassy thief thinking twice – consider taking 10 into Curses for Weakening Shroud and you afford yourself a little insurance while dropping into DS. DS1 hits very hard, especially for target’s who are sub 50% hp. If you opt for Lich Form, giggle at the damage for the short time you have before your enemies kitten themselves and focus you.

The best advice I can give is try it for yourself and see how you go. Prepare to die a bit until you work out when/how to engage and finish, but it’s very fun for what it is in small scale.

Your gear choice might be dependent upon which server you play on and the general population/meta they generally use.

I see mostly T1, T2, T3 competition and even the roamers tend to run with less Zerker gear and more defense.

The build is viable in the situation you are looking for because I run this very build.

It helps a great deal to have a good support group of players with you that know your strengths and weaknesses. One example of this is stomps. You have limited access to stability unless you trait for it or your party has it to share. You will down plenty of people but if they don’t get stomped they can be rallied or healed before you do much else.

You will also be under focus fire a great deal against knowledgeable players. They believe you are easy to control and down, and they tend to fear (no pun intended) your utilities and potentially fight changing skills. Your group can a great deal to help you stay out of focus fire and keep the pressure up.

Don’t be afraid to put some vit and toughness into your build. I run with a fairly tanky form of this build with some heavier gear and can still put out some consistently decent damage against all but the full bunker builds, which to be fair is normal.

No matter what you will be a target for CC and when thieves, eles, GS warriors, and Mesmers run, you will fall way behind in any chase situation. This can be detrimental if the rest of your group can chase and leaves you lagging behind. This is usually when you get picked off. This is why a good group dynamic is going to be your friend.

These are my opinions and observations. I am certain someone will arrive in this thread with all of the “just do….” advice so take it as general information you can use to understand exactly what to expect.

I have no idea how much experience you have on a Necro so I gave my points as if you are fresh to playing the class.

I carry two sets of gear.

One set is zerker and the other is PVT for zerg fights which I can perform extremely well in as long as I don’t try to be front line.

I will swap out different pieces based on encounters. Sometimes after a few days facing a server in WvW you recognize certain players and groups and tend to know better what to use against them, is these situations I might have a blend of zerker-tank gear to balance out damage/crit/survivability.

It did take some practice in this build to make it zerg friendly though and I firmly believe the Wellomancer build is better suited for zerg play.

I run 30/10/0/0/30 with knights armor with ruby orbs, zerker daggers, and zerker and knights ascended trinkets. Not very squishy especially in death shroud, and I also hit pretty hard. Unless my target is very tanky. Thieves I do have some complications with but I can get them dead most of the time, unless they run away

Agreed.

I run with about 3.5 armor sets, too many accessories and weapons etc to poke a stick at. In regards to how I described what I said earlier, I run in T1, and this referred very specifically to lurking about either solo, or in a group of 2-5 people max. I loiter around zerg island looking for a good time near there. In my own experience, I find its not really suited for anything other than roaming havoc style play.

Large group-wise (15+) I run wells, staff and oodles more toughness and vit, because that play style lends itself much more to that gear/spec setup.

Thanks everyone for their contributions! I am going to test on which build I like more and make adjustments from there.

So which traits are you using?
