Elite Specialization: The Ritualist
I would love Ritualist as a elite spec for necros. But i think the next e-spec will already be using a touch and is sand/mummy themed.
Unfortunately I think they cannibalized ritualist into the revenant, which is why we will never have our kitteny mummy themed light armor wearers ;(
when cantha hits, sure this might be a nice idea. for now though, i would prefer to get “Necromancer Munne Elite Specialisation” allowing us to wield hammers or vampiric dragon swords

But Necromancer and Ritualist channel energy from the same god. So these is a lot of cross over. I dont believe any GW1 class should be bound to any. Necromancer in GW2 doesnt really channel the dead currently. So things can change.
Spirits were already transformed into engi turrets. Spirit weapons were transformed into those ghastly guardian spirit weapons. Not much left to use.

Well spirits are already in game (ranger). So i think spirits of an ritualist e-spec would be more like them. Also more support orientated. Somehting necros are lacking though some gw1 players may be disappointed with that since ritualists were more then simple supports/healer.
I am sure Anet can design a ritualist e-spec if they want to. I think the more important question is do they want to make one? And if they want one, it would necros be the ones to get it or revenants (i dont think it would work with the other professions)? Personally i think it would work better with necros…

Those spirits were inspired by gw1 ranger nature rituals though, focusing more on giving buffs to allies rather than attacking foes. Though I’d be more than happy with any kind of support spec for necro in the next expac.

Actually the ranger spirits from gw2 are more like the defensive/support spirits form the ritualist. In gw1 the ranger spirits actually helped (or harmed) all characters (exept some types like other spirits) in thier reach also enemies and allies alike.
Since ANet has confirmed Elite Specialization are going to be the way Professions are changed and “new professions” are introduced into the game from this point out, I thought I would bring up a Profession many people have wanted to make a return. The Ritualist. and I have some ideas on how it could work.
Elite Spec: Ritualist
New Skill Type: Spirit. The Ritualist’s companions from the Underworld.
Profession Mechanic: Spirit Shroud. The Ritualist’s connection to the Mists grow exponentially, allowing them to hold ground in both planes. In this form, the Ritualist can rip the spirit out of their enemies.
Weapon: Torch. Burn your foes with Spiritfire.Having traveled to Tyria in the company of the Order of Whispers, Ritualists from Cantha give insight into the Mists to any Necromancer who wishes to learn.
Anet, please make this a reality.
I don’t think we’ll see ritualist for a while. Not until Cantha. But my god.. Cantha… I want this so badly. Necro really needs a support elite spec.

Turrets took the mechanic, but that can easily be changed by making Spirits mobile. And spirit weapons and actual Spirits aren’t really the same thing. Considering the overhaul Anet did for Mesmers and how different they are from GW1, I’m sure they would have no problem doing to same to Ritualist. Plus, it’s only an Elite Spec, so they wouldn’t have as much to do.
… I think they cannibalized ritualist into the revenant…
Why do you think this? Did you play ritualist in gw1? I’d genuinely like to get to the bottom of this common opinion.
I mained ritualist in gw1 and I honestly don’t see any similarities at all between it and the revenant.
All I can tell is:
- They both start with the letter R
- They both use magic associated with the Mists
- They both use blindfolds
The gameplay isn’t even remotely similar. The mechanics of the old rit are closer to engineer. (spirits = turrets, ashes = kits, weapon spells = elixirs)
If they add ritualist I hope they add some slight synergy to minions. In gw1 ritualists had the spawning power stat which greatly increased the health of summons, including necro minions. They also had spells like explosive growth and boon of creation to augment minion creation.

Well… In guild wars 1 necromancers could control a lot of minions, they had really good support as well and siphons used to be something. The profession evolved into something… different.
What ritualists used to do is dealing with the spirit of the deceased. They mainly used these deceased to borrow their strenght by various mean (sumoning them, putting them into the weapon of their allies or simply borrowing their remain). Revenant are very close to that since they basically borrow the strenght of a few strong characters from the past. They are also far from the ritualist, the same way that necromancers are far from the old necromancers in the way that they lost the ability they got to bestow the power of the spirits to their allies. They’ve become more straitforward and selfish in their approach by deepening their link with the spirits where the necromancer became also more straitforward and selfish in their approach by trepassing the boundary between life and death and thus creating the “shroud”.
I think the ritualist will eventually make its way back into where it belongs, the revenant.
I wish it was added as a core legend, but it will probably be saved for an elite specialization, which is pretty depressing, considering how core revenant is missing so many skills and how ritualist should have been the first and most important legend to begin with.

All the core themes are there. If that’s not enough, you can always look at the revenant’s PvP title: Champion Ritualist.
M: Bladedancer – N: Scourge – En: Occultist – Ra: Swampstalker
T: Sharpshooter – G: Sunspear – Re: Hierophant – W: Corsair

Ritualists called upon known figures in Cantha. So do revenants with legends. Ritualists used the magic of the mists. Their entire kit is about spirits and channeling the spirit’s power.
Necromancers meanwhile raise the corpses of the dead and curse opponents. Their minions are fleshy and made of bone, and their guidance is from Grenth and Dhuum.
Rezah was encountered in the realm of torment, and revenant channels the legend of Mallyx.
I get that there are connections between ritualists and revenant.
However why do you guys seem to dismiss the connection between necromancers and ritualists? The actual definition of necromancy is “the supposed practice of communicating with the dead, especially in order to predict the future.” Furthermore it is described that necromancers (not just in gw2, i mean in general) summon spirits and use them to animate corpses. Like that’s how they actually get the undead flesh and bones to move… By energizing it with a spirit.
The GW2 necromancer, like any necromancer in fiction, is based on these real world myths and legends. Sticking strictly to GW2, necros use life force in their magic. Well what is lifeforce? Is that not spiritual energy collected from dying creatures?
My interpretation of it is that the ritualist is more of a willing communer with spirits. They form a mutual bond with the dead and have a more balanced relationship. Whereas necromancers are more scientific and forceful. They force the dead to bend to their will.
Revenants seem to be somewhere in between because they seem to get along well with some spirits like Jalis, while struggling to control Mallyx. They don’t summon Joe Bob from Cantha to give them a buff. They don’t collect every nit picking sliver of life energy from rabbits and trolls to feed their power. They focus entirely on the “big” ones. They are more or less imbued with their powers whereas necromancers and ritualists have to study extensively to perfect their arts.
