I have to say I’m quite enjoying this, the extra life bar is a godsend for majority of the new HoT locations. I main a Revenant with my Necro and am finding Revenant before Herald is a struggle to grind with, its so much easier farming on the Necro.

I’m just running a typical dagger/wh with staff minion master built with soul reaping, death and blood magic… I’m then using health pet, golem, minions and the other shroud pet with movement glyph… Is this the correct setup to run or us there a stronger option? Also weapon wise is dagger wise in here or should so swap/carry an axe instead?

Browsing through these threads for tips also which is helping, necro may not be great for dungeons etc but for world content it’s great fun!

I suggest you to stay with dagger or try greatsword. Axe is not good… at all. Or at least is not good because it does not cleave and it’s damage is lackluster (it’s good, though, for burst and Life Force generation). To farm it’s best a greatsword or a dagger.

However you may want to use an Axe instead of a Staff if your build is power based and you need a ranged weapon for boss fight or in those situations you can’t go melee. Staff is not good for power builds in my opinion.

Your setup is just fine. Dagger is a really strong mainhand weapon for power builds (just remember: 2 and 3 are DPS losses, so only use them for the utility) and the Warhorn is quite strong as well, especially with all the break bars in the jungle.

For a secondary weapon, the Staff is also totally fine. The damage isn’t great, but the utility makes up for it. If you want a better option for ranged damage, though, Axe/Focus or Axe/Dagger would be good too (Warhorn is a stronger offhand weapon overall but you’re already using it with your mainhand Dagger).

And don’t you worry about dungeons. We handle them just fine. If you know how much damage you can tank and when to dodge, you’ll have a good time tearing baddies apart.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

If you are going JUST for farming (i.e. tagging lots of mobs for kill credit) I would suggest going condition. It’s a bit slower to play, and not so much “in your face” but you can tag tons of mobs.

I run something like this:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vRAQNArYRjk0QLN2dD20A7NWSGMpLQG4nFPD3hBxoc21KAA-TRSAABUcIAi+EAImyPAeAAMt/Qoq/0xRAgQ9BtpEUUQsF-e

Epidemic is almost a must on the Dragons Stand map. So many enemies always so close together. If you see a champ/legendary just getting drowned in conditions, just pop epidemic and watch every one around them just getting 5-6k burning, 5k bleed, and 3k poison. (Yes that’s per tick. I was able to get 12k burning from epidemic once, it was basically awesome.)

But this of course is my preference, and found it works amazingly well for farming. It allows you to be rather tanky, yet still remain somewhat effective, as well as the ability to easily tag literally dozens of mobs in a very short amount of time.

Farming being general grinding like eventsw, soloing hero points, soloing general content whilst I farm mastery etc…

Is there any point going reaper/greatsword before I’ve fully unlocked the trait line? Is there any point where its more worthwhile than playing dagger/warhorn? And is minion master the better setup to use for doing so?

Yes ofc Reaper FTW , once u go RS u cant go back to base necro lol . I would get GS for main weapon and dagger warhorn for second setup . MM build is best for farming purposes and hard enemies . If u are going to use aoes and kill many mobs in groups go with wells and blood magic

How far along the reaper line should I switch? Or should I wait until I’ve fully unlocked it?

So many viable builds, makes necro so much fun to play. I know my revenant is statistically better but necro is too fun to log off haha.

Hmm so no staff? What about ranged fights :X

Well if u need range fight use axe , but i dont think its necessary.Staff is a pvp weapon. U will be fine with melee . Even if u opened first trait that allows u to have Reaper Shroud u are ok to go with reaper . Reaper trailine helps a lot in pvp , ull make use of minions and greatsword skills . and ofc RS . Rise is really helpfull but u will be fine without that!

So as an example with the first trait line unlocked for reaper. Whhat trait setups should I run if you’re saying reaper is good to go with from the first unlock?

I think I’ll try out dagger/warhorn and greatsword to see how it fairs. Really excited to unlock reaper fully and use rise. So much more exciting than my revenant at the moment.

I ran with your same weapon setup for a while. The melee DPS was absolutely fantastic, but I kept running into situations where I wanted/needed to go ranged.

Personally. I kept the greatsword and used the staff for offhand ranged dps/utility. I was also running Chilling Victory, however, so the added AoE chills were great for me and might not suit your build so well. Now and again I also use axe/focus or axe/warhorn for combat situations, but as much as I actually like the axe, I prefer the Staff.

I’m thinking I’m better off with greatsword and staff just for general ease of use without messing around etc. How does greatsword rate damage wise?
