As much as it would be cool to see a mark on greatsword. They dont work against stationary bosses or objects. Which makes them kind of sucky. Id like small wells more than marks.

Although if you mean mark of pain in gw1 format. Then yes why not! Although skill 5’s on two handers are typically control type high cooldown skills.

From the information we know about HoT PvE (new defiance, focus on open world, large scale content) I am expecting the GS to not have a place in dungeons and be a tanky weapon that will benefit that type of content (CCs, fields, etc).

That would be an idea… if Necros weren’t among the very worst for dungeons, and another 2.5 years of dungeon-uselessness would suck major kitten . Also the Warri-Dungeon-build is just as effective in Open World, at least trait and weaponwise. And just as we do not need “dedicated” Control-builds now, we won’t need them in the expansion because Zerkers will still do their thing, and with 50 people laying the smackdown on a single boss there are enough CC’s among them nobody needs controllers. Just a “CC now” shout. And even if they’d need a more Control focused player, chances are the Necros Control woul be so freaking slow the breakbar would regenerate faster than you could dish out CC. Also, current Necro has more than enough Dark Fields so the Zerkers can wreck the breakbar via blindnessspam, and we don’t even have to change our standard-builds for them.

Theres no such thing is a tanky weapon. All weapons deal damage. And you can craft them with any stat combo you like. Even more defensive weapon sets can still be decent for damage (guardian mace).

And its news to me that dps weapons cant have control skills on them.

In that case, a case can be made for Guardian hammer, since the auto can supply perma-protection for a group.

But fair enough :p

Yes guardian hammer is very defensive. But it is also very high damage. Its not far below greatsword sword focus rotation. Which is why its so popular for fractals. Its very high damage and provides the group with so much safety its pretty broken. I always cringe when people think of weapons as being so stuck in one role. Because its simply not the case most of the time. Even necros scepter can be used as a direct damage weapon. Although thats one of the only cases where it doesnt work out too well.

I’m still hoping GS 5 is a pure DPS well of some kind for purposes of trait interactions.

I’d rather see Mark of Pain

Thats not to say the guardian hammer doesn’t have it’s pitfalls.

The auto chain is so slow that against moving targets the symbol will often never hit them beyond the original pulse.

Symbols also require you stand still in them to get the full benefit which can also lead to organized enemies nuking you down or lining up CC spam (or a mixture of both)

The launch on number 4 is also incredibly slow & telegraphed.

I dont see how thats relevant. He said it was a tanky weapon. I said it wasnt so black and white.

Besides this is PvE were talking about. Mobs arent going to dodge your CC and most wont move out of the symbols either. Everyone melees in PvE. The only fights where the boss moves out of symbols a lot is mossman and archdiviner. However with a hammer guard the group can stay closer more so they move less. And the hammer symbols should be traited to allow plenty of space while staying within their radius.

I said a case could be made, not that it really was.

And necro scepter is definitely absolutely horrid as a direct damage weapon.

GS should appeal to both condi and power users, and still have utility. scepter is really the only decent condi weapon, while dagger is the only decent power weapon. Frankly axe sucks, and if we have to lose a weapon let it be axe. i dont want to be pigeon holed into going power just to use our specialization. Would royally kitten me off.

There is absolutely no reason GS should appeal to both. Staff + S/X is an amazing condition weapon set, and making GS hybrid isn’t going to help condi. The last thing they need is to be forced into a melee set.

They arent taking away weapons to bring in new ones. Also necro has more than enough access to ranged weapons that the only thing really needed is a melee cleave with some movement, group utility can be gained through some skills on the gs along with utility skills and traits.

With the greatsword for necro it will most likely be melee, Marjory will be the one teaching us how to use it and she was taught by Rox. The specialization will most likely mean that you have to use that weapon in a slot, thats it.

If marks could be triggered by bosses like the fire elemental, or any world boss like that then I wouldnt mind seeing it on the greatsword, but currently all I use the staff for is trash on things like claw or when im getting in range to use the axe and then I only use the AA.

Now for things that might be cool on the greatsword, ability to use on fleeing enemies or a sell buff that make your attacks be ranged, like the slayer in Tera. It would have some uses and it would be something unique. Its something that they could do if they dont want the necromancer to be really mobile. We have enough fear so another utility would be good.
