Q:

Either

Step 1: Specialization will fix the profession.
Step 2: Everyone will only use specialization and Great sword.
Step 3: People will complain that Necros are too OP.
Step 4: Nerf
Step 5: Necros will going back to being a kittening useless profession

Or

Step 1: Specialization is so underpowered that its useless

Which do you think will happen?
Powerful -> Nerf
Just right -> no change – useless class still useless
Underpowered -> Unused

I think GS will be handled the same way Dhuumfire was handled ie DHUUMLY.

WE NEED SOMETHING OP LIKE DHUUMFIRE BECAUSE WE HAVE THE WEAKEST PROFESSION IN GAME. DONT kittenING NERF THE GREATSWORD AFTER PUTTING IT IN.

…sorry…still haven’t gotten over the Dhuumfire nerf…give us a little hope..then crush it…kill our family and friends…rub salt in out wounds…kitten our corpses…Arena Net…

I vote : Just right.

And, well, necromancer have it’s good point, he just lack some little things that would give him a real value in term of supportive ability.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

We know that the greatsword is melee and power based.

Melee weapons in guild wars 2 need easy access to both a CC and a leap or they aren’t viable. They also need some sort of block/stealth or disengage. This applies to all classes. (Mainhand dagger has a CC, but no leap. There has never been a Mainhand dagger necromancer at any major Pvp tournament)

But necromancer has none of these, and these supposedly don’t finish the necromancer theme.

Or the greatsword theme. I guess Ranger greatsword has a block, but that is not a scaling defense that the necromancer needs to avoid getting focused like Nosoc in the finals.

In addition, necromancer weakness in pvE and Pvp is related to no group support. Group support means boons, fields, and blast finishers. Greatsword is known for none of these things on other classes.

In addition, necromancer condition removal is tied to weapons. The traits that provide necromancer condition removal are super weak, and although consume conditions exists there’s a reason why the warrior is not viable relying on its similar heal for condition removal. So, no matter how über or imba the greatsword is, you still are stuck carrying staff.

Greatsword cannot possibly solve all of the necromancer needs and probably will not address most of them, while at the same time adding an increased weakness to conditions (eg immobilize). If we get any of our needs addressed, that would be one step forward one step back.

The great hope is really a hope that the specialization includes a core mechanic or trait overhaul (replacing all lifesteal everything with some new idea would be nice).

i dont get why they made Dhuumfire 100% useless though

because its in a trait that only powernecros could make use of now since its deathsroud 1 related…. but they have no condition damage….

and its not even the old burn duration
it would still be pretty much useless on power necro even with old burn duration

they should have just reduced the burn duration by 50% and not change anythign else

i mean engineers have old necro dhuumfire as trait too … and not even grandmaster trait for them and its perfectly fine?

For sure, once the specialization is released, almost every Necromancer will try it so there will be an overwhelming number of Necromancers running around with GS.

You can also be sure that the specialization will not be very far from the current design in terms of dps, sustain, and group support. It is not as though, by specializing, you can be L81. I just hope we can trade some selfishness for selflessness and earn more demand in cooperative play.

Its not useless, I can’t remember his name right now but a high tier PvPer used it after its nerfs just fine. You just had to add a life blast into your rotation. The real issue with it was that we don’t have the base defenses necessary to run such an offensive build.

Dhuumfire still likes condition damage and condition duration, leading players to glassy builds.

Other professions can build whatever they like to get burning with a lot lower opportunity cost. I had to laugh playing Ranger power slacker with sword / torch and one utility, totally dwarfing Necro condi on its power build.

I guess I’m the only person who likes the change that was made to Dhuumfire because it adds a more controlled feel to my condition burst. I can control when burning is applied and follow it with torment, fear and various other conditions instead of waiting for the burn to proc on it’s own. Less RNG more strategy.

This. It is impossible for necro be viable as a melee class in pvp. It could be used similar to ranger gs as a utility weapon in a power spec based around death shroud 1 and wells. But i doubt greatsword will be overly useful. I predict it sucks in pvp

´Here is the thing though: It is not like GS is the ONLY thing the Necro-Spec gets. For all we know, it could get F2-F4 skills, an invulnerability elite, a projectile blocking bonewall for an utility and a “dash” that makes you untargetable (like Marjory uses). If we’d get GS only, then, sure (although even then we might get a block/wall/invuln/reflect or something on GS 5 and mobility on GS 3).

I think the new greatsword spec will be just right and highly used. As already stated, we are also getting other heal, utilities, and elite with this spec at minimum.
