I decided again to play Necromancer. And i try not to look the way it is, but the feeling, i play a Necromancer.
And it is working in some way. Exspecially since its fun to play a barely played class anyway. But as soon as i started to PvP, my most beloved Role, or combat style is lacking.

I did research on the topic and found out, am i the only one that finds Nekromancer way to short ranged?
I mean, i cant stand up on the rooftop of a house on BAttle for Kyhlo and nuke ppl runing under me? Even mesmer can put down a Chaos Storm. Enginer can use Mortal, or Fling Granades, effectively when they are supposed to be a skirmish class, but Nekromancer cant, when is a “pure blooded cloth” caster??? Or is it me? Do i miss something?

I didnt found anything, but i still list the things i found out so faar. Why it lacks. In my opinion. (or if anyone can offer me a good way go on dont be shy)

1, Staff : 2-5 no go, many playeres simply wont run on them, or they are insanely hard to place from that range, to hit. Besides you cant place them to faar, and dont becouse of the big cd-s they are not really an option to spike or constant dmg.
2,Dagger Main hand, – no go, its more of a melee range. Not even with ofhand anything. Focus has no real nukes for long range.
3,Scepter main hand – Seems legit, (but its not a burst, its only auto attack) there are no real ofhand items that could offer decent skills for range besides daggers enfeebling blood again.
4,Axe is just totally medium or almost close range.

Most ofhand items also offer only support skills, and not real nukes. Exspecially not for long range.

Looking at utility i only see wells and signets (since pets suck and are not option on long range, exspecially if you are up on a roof). Wells are good, but they also have a long cooldown and must have a trait to make them placable.
So utiliy would be out of question anyway, even if you had good utility, they are ment for utility and not for constant dmg.

SOOOO is it me? Or I must leave my Necro again becosue the lack of something i like?
I mean whats going on? Necromancer is supposed to be my favourite class in any game, or rpg, or fantasy. Why is it so different in this game? I understand many players love the Necro as it is, but understand this Anet. MANY players are totally dissapointed in your improvistaion.
Anyone solution? Besides rerolling? Or hoping for more weapons or anyting?

You can spec for a focus to have a 1200m range, too. Targetable wells need to be 1200 but they’re not :/

If you spec Greater Marks, even the nubbiest of nub should be able to hit with them.

I see. So we are viable in Ranged constant dmg in some way. I just didnt notice it?
Or Marks are not really ment for that?

Do focus skills deal dmg at all?

Try something like this for ranged nukes if you don’t want to mess with wells.

Edit: You could also dump the Death Magic points for 10 in Curses for a little more crit and life force gain on crit, if you feel comfortable with the smaller marks. Weapon swap is also up to you, but axe/focus is probably the best for pure ranged damage. I would probably use dagger/warhorn though, for close targets and kiting/swiftness/CC options.

With a minion build:

Flesh Golem charge from 1200 range. Staff 4,3,2. By this time, your bone minions should be close and they should just be getting up from knockdown. Blow both minions.

That’s some pretty decent ranged burst if you ask me.

Alternatively, you could do the ground targeted wells thing with Dark Pact. Necromancer isn’t really a “nuking” class so don’t expect Thief-style numbers.

Unfortunately necro is one of the profession that is not the best at longest range 1200 combat (I know right). There are two builds that I like the most, first one is blood is power + epidemic build but I am now running with Power/Crit range build below nowadays:

Your best bet for long range combat is

  • Power/crit build
  • Staff, Scepter/Focus 30/30/10/0/0
  • Greater Marks, and Spiteful talisman
  • Double marks for utilities

This is for 900-1200 combat

1200 Range:
4 skills from staff (with greater mark, it’s easy to land)

1080 Range:
2 skills from focus

900 Range:
2 marks from utility
1 spell from deathshroud, lifeblast
2 skills from scepter, grasp/feast

You’re probably thinking, power/crit build with scepter (lol) but that aoe snare + double marks is a killer, along with feast of corruption scaling very well with power/crit

Since this is power/crit build, you’ll hit hard with life blast / lich form – just do lich auto attack with that and /laugh

EDIT: in that build above, you don’t auto attack with scepter

In regards to what Chronologist stated:

I think most people overlook how much condition damage you naturally receive from placing points into curses for the precision. Might buffs, the curses line, blood is power, and condition duration from spite add up to some impressive condition damage without even specializing in it.

Zintair wrote up a great guide on hybrid damage here that I believe would emphasize the usefulness of not putting “all your eggs in one basket”.

What Kayotik said. I would also recommend watching Mwiff (correctly spelled?) from Team Paradigm on streams … and look at his builds. Gives you a pretty good idea about how what works.

I just read the warrior forums… I’m playing a power necro and thought my damage was decent, a warrior posted his highest rifle kill shot was 32k damage on a lvl 80 mob and 1.2million damage on a bunny or some white mob.
