Greatsword Boring
In PvE the under 50% gravedigger spam is the highest dps we have as necromancer also the pulsing blind skill.
I think the autoattack hits too slowly to get good RS uptime on it’s own and to feel exciting to play with.
Coupled with the nerfs to chill, it feels very underwhelming and I find myself running D/W until it’s time to spam ‘2’.
I think a lot of things could be solved by speeding up the auto attack and then reducing the 100%-off cooldown to a reduced cooldown to compensate, so there is more visual variety and more than hitting a single key at roughly single second intervals.
Love greatsword, at this point it is easily the most enjoyable weapon we have.

I think it needs to hit just a bit faster to allow you to handle the crowds of trash NPCs that you’re supposed to be able to. It’s reliance on GS2 for DPS gets boring after a while as well.
It just needs tuning and to be a bit more stable.
I love using it, pull, vuln, blind aoe and not to mention grave digger, it’s great as a secondary weapon.
Just reduce the AA chain and Gravedigger by 1/4 of a second and I think we’d be in good shape on GS. The pull works fine, still a bit wonky but that’s just game physics. Could be longer but I can’t complain too much in that. The pulsing blind is amazing against teas, and the 3 is great for when you get those enemies together, love to use 5 and 3, then just laugh at all the LF I gained and critics chance with Decimate Defenses.
Funny, I was going into BW with the mindset that revenant was going to be in focus and in mind while quickly trying the other elite specs.
Reaper was by far the most enjoyable out of all of them and I loved GS and reaper both in pve and PVP. Gravedigger crit for 8k with marauder and strength and with such a low CD while others are around it was amazing and outperformed everyone else I fought.
Love greatsword, at this point it is easily the most enjoyable weapon we have.
Agree completly both in sPvP (suprised how much I land with it) and WvW, dont do pvE but heard good things there aswell. a fix on Grasping Darkness and we have it right.

I don’t find myself autoing much with it in PvP, but you land a lot more than you would expect. I manage to land most of my Gravediggers, surprisingly, though I expect that to change as people get experience. That will mean people get hit by my other skills more often, though, as they save the dodge for Gravedigger.
I’m used to playing hammer guard in PVE, so I’m well acquainted with slow attack speeds.
The greatsword has all of the things that I wanted in a necro weapon. High damage blind + cripple, solid sustained damage, a finisher of some kind that synergizes with its own innate field, a pull + interrupt, and the chill synergizes with a lot of things. It has damage, defense, and utility all in one package.
Imo GS is amazing. Not perfect yet, but with a bit of work it’ll be a “must have”.
GS5 &4 are just exactly what necro was missing (when GS5 work properly^^).
I enjoy a lot GS3, and GS2 have a good dps now (8k without might or vuln is not bad at all when you can spam it, and in cavalier not zerk!)
GS1 feel less “bad” than in BWE1, it is the only “bad” thing on GS to me atm, I barely use it.
So, I don’t think GS is boring at all, actualy I play it more often than I was expected. I was more focus on RS in the previous beta (so strong in BWE2 thanks to the unbug and changes on reaper onslaugh).
It isn’t feeling great to me either, but that’s at least partially because I’m away on vacation and my internet connection is really laggy. Gravedigger seems like it takes just an awfully long time to land, though. Even discounting the lag, I think I’d prefer for the cast time to drop a smidge, even if the per-hit damage has to go down to compensate. Not saying that would necessarily be best for the weapon overall, that’d just be what I would prefer.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
In comparison to GD in BWE1, trust me it feel so smooth in BW2^^.
And once you get use to the casttime you start to use it to land GD on the max target by adjusting your position. I wasn’t a fan of this spell before but it is quite nice now imo.
It feels smoother and more fun I think I’m going to miss the GS win BW2 ends

I’ve used it to great success in PvP as well coupled with Staff for range and condition removal. Works great. Beat a lot of things.

Soul Marks at range to AoE bomb a bit, then get close with GS and Shouts. Messes up an enemy team in an XvX team fight wonderfully
A weapon, any weapon, being boring of exciting is extremely subjective. I, for one, love the slow, powerful swings of great weapons and I actually started a Necromancer just because they get to use a GS.
OMG I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Been playing power necro for years but the weapons didn’t feel right except for dagger and warhorn. Axe and focus were alright but I used staff instead for the some of its CC and extra DS damage.
For power necro builds, the GS feels right at home. The devs did a good job with GS/power/Reaper synergy
I just wish they made the last hit of the GS also take 1/2s instead of 1s. It really, really feels off.

GS got a ton more enjoyable in BWE#2 compared to the first.
Much less rooted in place, and the risk/reward ratio feels much much better now.
I just hope they make the auto attack a bit less backloaded (all LF gen and the chill are backloaded on the chain); increase the range of #3 a bit; and they fix the #5 skill as it doesn’t work most of the time.
in pve that mobs are trash and stupid it’s fun, but the game also has pvp, and GS isn’t that good. casting speed in auto attack and gravedigger is too much. 2s to cast gravedigger? 3sec to do chill from auto attack? hahahaha
GS is only boring for me because right now in GW2 the only thing that matters is dps, which effectively reduces GS to spamming 2. If possitioning, hard and soft cc, debuffs, and combo fields that aren’t fire and water ever become important I think GS will be incredibly interesting to play.

First up, I love playing Necro, I was looking forward to playing the GS when we had access, but after playing it, I have to honestly say I don’t see where this weapon will be of any use in the game, maybe just maybe it could be used in PvP but its that slow that the chances are you will be burst down and splatted before you even get a chance,
Unless there are major changes to it, I don’t honestly see me ever using a GS.

I feel like those saying GS isn’t ‘good’ in pvp didn’t… actually pvp with it during the last BWE.
When I tried it I fell in love with it. Now to be fair i’ll never attempt to us this against players. It’s jut not the kind of weapon that works good for pvp combat, but I would bring it along in wvw to clear npc trash easily and quickly, and in pve it just feels right. There’s still the buggy pulls and range problems, but those are already being addressed.

GS was the greatest thing to happen to Necros. Reaper spec absolutely crushes. I both fear and accept the potential nerfs that Reaper faces once ANet datamines raids, but as of now, I’ve never wanted to play my necromancer so badly once HoT hits.

I Like the greatsword but gravedigger is sooooo boring. It’s basically a second auto after 50% hp on foes with large healthpools(which tend to happen a lot in pve). Was fighting a champ frog in the latest BWE and it took atleast 3 min to kill it after it reached 50%hp. I just swapped the auto to gravedigger and I didn’t have to do anything.
Perhaps it was just the people I was fighting, but I was having very little issue in landing Gravediggers in PvP. Will you land them all? No, but you don’t need to either. It has a short cooldown, even if you miss, and there are ways to set it up. Running Greatsword and Chilled to the Bone means there are 4 must-avoid skills, any of which can be unblockable via NCSY. How many dodges do people have again?

I agree with the OP, I can’t understand where this weapon belongs. In PvP, it is too slow and in PvE reaper shroud offers so much more: constant vulnerability application and permanent 25 might with 100% crit chance. I wouldn’t want to camp great sword in PvE at all. Instead, d/wh has way better life force generation to stay in reaper shroud longer.
I feel GS is amazing. Definitely going to use this in Spvp and Pve.

I haven’t played beta at all so I’ll reserve judgement for release. But I could see where the weapon could feel boring. The attacks don’t really compliment one another.
I still think the Ranger’s Greatsword is the most ‘fun’ weapon in the game. The attacks works by themselves but also can be chained together and the weapon actually compliments several other weapons the class has.

GS#1 Auto with condi <—> Auto with boon
GS#2 Hard hitting whirl attack <—> Hard hitting whirl attack
GS#3 Utility spell with Vulnerability <—> Utility spell with blind
GS#4 Pulsing aoe field with condi <—> Pulsing aoe field with boon
GS#5 Conical AoE pull <—> Radial AoE pull.
GS was a game changer in team fights, one nice time warp on a zerk reaper with stab. Good bye enemy team.
