As long as they make the hammer sufficiently necro-y within the bounds of what GW necros are, I will love it.

Well considering i slapped on a screenshot of a guardian holding the cultist hammer, kinda for the allusion of us not being so necroy as we would just get the same thing as other professions (what i kinda noticed now leveling a guardian, their staff has the exact reverse philosophy behind than our, but identical as warriors hammers; well less hard cc, but way more polished).
Haven’t heard, is hammer confirmed for necro, or just something generally desired?
While a massive hammer or greatsword may eventually appear in the Necromancer’s repertoire, they are the least “necromancy” weapons if you look at it from an RP perspective.
More likely the necromancer will get access to the Mace and Shortbow first, as those typically fall into the “Simple Weapon” proficiency list.

In an interview a dev did was a third party organization, it was said that they are looking to bring every weapon to every class, as a part of their expansion of the classes. So it is not 100% that every class gets every weapon, but it is very likely that we will see at least a lot of them.
TL;DR not guaranteed, but highly likely.
As for lore, I think every weapon could fit as long as they keep the current design going. By that I mean; look at every weapon we have so far and how they work, they are all ritual tools, instruments to enact a desired spell-type effect. Not a single weapon is used to hit something on its own (we don’t stab with the dagger, the swinging causes the Necrotic Bites and whatnot to be cast, essentially). In this way, Hammer and Greatswords would not necessarily be used like normal; we wouldn’t be hitting someone in the face with a hammer, we would use it to cast close range AoE control effects, most likely.

Please hammer, don’t hurt em.
Tenebrous Fivetree – Guardian
Zelots of Shiverpeaks (ZoS) – Northern Shiverpeaks

The cultist (necromancer) in the Cliffside Fractal uses a hammer. The animations and manner in which he wields it are sufficiently “necro-y”. Now if we could just apply corruption to our foes…

You know its 2 guardian and other 2 warrior skills, the hammer just looks “necro-y” because it has pink tentacles whirl around and the head is quite dark.

When ya got pink tentacles, do you even need anything else?
THAT’s what we need; wieldable octopi !!!
No, really, all kidding aside. Think about it. Wouldn’t “wielding” living creatures be very much in-line with being a necromancer? I’m not talking familiars or summons like one would associate with mages or illusionists. I’m talking creatures that the necro actually brandishes as weapons. Think snakes, scorpions, spiders, drakes, bats, and all manner of weird, otherwordly, ghastly, or infernal creatures. Grafted, living, organic weaponry FTW !
An elite that fuses all your minions onto your character to create undead battle armor. Total geek out moment!!!
The second I saw that they might be adding weapons, I said I wanted guns that “shot” minions at people.
The most likely first weapons they give necro would be sword or greatsword.

So you want to strap dead animated animals, demons and the remaining life force of other beings onto your entire body, without actually being in control of their movements (since most undead are kinda sentient) and allow them to channel your powers? That is not only going into the realm of even zhaitan and joko would laugh at the obvious flaws AND its going into places even i wouldnt go (what says a lot) with the fact that most monsters are either tentacles, balls or… wurms
Would rather get Scythe as a 2-handed melee weapon that cleaved and was power based and worked with siphoning somehow.

And they’ve said multiple times they wont be making new weapon types anytime soon. They will be bringing in new weapons for all classes from the pre-existing weapons. It actually irritates me when people come up with unrealistic suggestions like scythes, because it doesnt help the discussion and it just derails the topic into some fantasy land.
OP post seems more like a mesmer. It’s purple after all :P

no, they aren’t. Shadowknights have been in nearly every mmo ever. as of now, we are the opposite of guardians. giving a greatsword to the necromancer makes us the complete opposite.

Scythes – gw1 – dervish. We dont have dervish anymore. And devs said they wont be making any new weapon types in the near future. So your still going off topic. Dont need scythes if we have an animation and skins to fill your need to be grim reaper. Make reasonable suggestions please (ie already exisiting weapons).
I feel like Hammer would be similar to staff but without the range. It would be cool to see a weapon that primarily supports MM (assuming of course MM becomes worthwhile).

its commonly suggested that necro hammer have a shadowscythe effect
- but i have to agree with spoj; suggesting new weapon types is a bit… annoying

We already have the precedence for spectral-like additions onto our weapons to make them look different, I’m all for that happening with other weapon sets if it makes things cooler, but please stop saying scythe.
When did the devs say they wouldn’t be adding new weapon types anytime soon? I thought they said that they would be adding new weapons but I could be mistaken. (and yes I know that they said they would be working on bringing existing weapons to all classes but I thought they also said they were working on new weapons entirely as well.)

I haven’t ever seen new weapon types overall being announced (not that they are), nor have I seen them say no. But as of now, no makes a lot more sense, because the resources to add in a sufficient number of new weapons is vastly more than to just start spreading the weapon love.
What’s the most efficient weapon for dealing out death and suffering?
The pistol.
Giff necros pistal. Clint Eastwood-reaper for 2014

Actually cold weaponery is way more effective at actually killing people, pistols are just more efficient at reducing possible retaliation (as a example anyone within 15m of a person carrying a gun could kill them with a dagger unless they are already aiming by the time the person with said dagger starts moving, as in dont bring a dagger to a gun fight is very inaccurate).
Also rifles have a higher total kill % than guns in terms of firearms even if the amount of times someone wanted to kill a person with a hugn is higher (so statistically even rifles more lethal than guns)
Now if we add the fact that a person on tyria holding a weapon instantly becomes a expert on how to use it and all the magic going on, not only would cold weaponery be the optimal choise, but even bows would be stronger than guns since the power the arrow would hit you with is proportional to the strenght the weilder puts into it.
Off the cuff, here’s a skill set I might like to see for a Necro hammer. I know it’s needlessly complicated and imposes an absurdly high burden of knowledge, but it’s exactly the sort of creepy, clingy, stalker, inescapable angle I’d like to see given to the Necro.
1.
A) Omen: Cleaving melee attack, heavy direct damage and regain 1% LF per target hit.
B) Tender Destiny: Same as Omen, except also applies a nonstacking debuff called Destiny for 5 seconds. Foes who move more than 600 units away from the Necromancer lose Destiny and the Necromancer gains 5% LF.
C) Inevitability: Cleaving melee attack, longer wind-up animation than Omen, even heavier direct damage, grants 1% LF per target hit, and applies a 2-second Cripple and is unblockable against targets who are debuffed with Destiny.
2. Ties that Bind: Smack your target in melee range for heavy direct damage and then channel at up to 600 range for up to three seconds. For each half-second that you channeled, the target gains a stack of Ties that Bind. Stacks last for 8 seconds. Every time your foe attempts to apply a condition onto you, you instead apply the same condition to them (with your condition damage and duration multipliers but the original condition’s base duration) and they lose a stack. Moderate cooldown.
3. A) Reaper’s Kiss: Smack your target in the heart in melee range for heavy direct damage and apply a dubuff called Reaper’s Kiss. Becomes Reaper’s Embrace.
B) Reaper’s Embrace: Instant skill. Activate to teleport your target to you from up to 1200 units away, and also Chill them for 3 seconds if they were more than 400 units from you. High cooldown.
4. Leave Us: Cleaving attack, 240 range, moderate direct damage, knocks back and cripples (4 seconds) all foes except your target, who is Immobilized (2 seconds). Moderate Cooldown.
5. Scorned Lovers: Targeted ability, 1200 range. Slam the ground, summoning 5 Shades from under the ground. These Shades will swiftly pursue your target for up to 15 seconds, are Invulnerable to everyone except your target, and take reduced damage from the target’s AoE attacks but have fairly low health. Shades deal heavy direct damage and apply a stack of Torment to anyone they pass through. If your target Stealths, the Shades will continue to follow them but they will Stealth as well for everyone except the target and cease dealing damage to foes they pass through. Not even the Necromancer will be able to see them until your target exits stealth. Upon reaching the target of the ability, they instantly grasp the target, dying but dealing heavy damage (dealing more damage the longer they had to run), applying 2 stacks of Torment, and applying a stack of Lover Scorned. If your target acquires three stacks of Lover Scorned, they are knocked down and Revealed for 3 seconds. Very long cooldown.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.

OK. Time for skill speculation. It’s hammer time!
1. Boink is a basic, slow as molasses in winter, direct damage just like staff but 50% stronger because it only works within 120 units.
2. Frosty Slammer chills for 2 seconds for half the damage of #1
3. Sickening Thump applies 5 seconds of poison similar to staff #4 but longer
4. Whack-a-Dredge does the equivalent of Warrior’s Stomp applying a 180 unit stun AoE with direct damage roughly the same as #1.
5. Perspiring Inspiration is an AoE 5 second Regen with 5 seconds of Vigor.

Merging with all one’s minions to form… Devastator… Classic!
I’ll take a swing at this. I tried to keep them somewhat similar to the guardian’s hammer because I like the idea of a necromancer corrupting a guardians power.
1)
Dark Hammer – cleave foe(s) with a heavy smash 130 range – 1/2s cast
Chilling Embrace – same as above but applies 1s of chill 130 range – 1/2s cast
Oblivion’s Gate – smash the ground creating an area that siphons health from those within (Combo Field: Dark) 180 range – 1s cast
2)
Unholy Scourge – smash the targets face while transferring a condition to them (possible cleave) 130 range – 1/2s cast – 6s recharge
3)
Endless Night – unleash a wave that blinds and damages in a cone in front of you while generating life force – 300 range – 3/4s cast – 15s recharge – 4% life force per target hit
4)
Grim Embrace – damage nearby foes while corrupting 2 boons (Combo Finisher: Blast) 240 range – 1s cast – 20s recharge – unblockable -prioritizes stability and protection because I hate you guardian-
5)
Vampiric Shroud channel for 3 seconds siphoning health and gaining life force; foes are chilled for 3 seconds if still within range when it ends 600 range – 3s cast – 30s recharge – 8% life force per tick
Likely OP but looks fun to play.

Bahahahahaha, Cultist hammer is now in game!
