I keep dying
Practice practice practice. Play some PvP as a sort of “Trial by Fire” if you wish. Strafe keeping your camera centered on your opponent, and use your dodges sparingly. Necro doesn’t have much dodge capability, so make them count.
Just keep playing. This game has some new mechanics (as you’ve noticed), you just need time to adapt, it’ll feel more natural with time.
Practice dodging and attacking from outside the mob’s range. It is a lot of movement but you can do it. As Altroll said, you get at most 2 dodges before running out of stamina and having to recharge so kite the mob rather than standing in front of it. You can also distract it with minions but, if your minion dies, get some space between you and the mob fast.
Use the staff and put down marks in the path the mob will take to get to you blast away. When the mob gets close change to axe or dagger if you are power based and finish it. If you use specter, snare and kite a bit.
On lower levels, use heal each time more than its healing count is missing from your hp (just dont bother with strategy of it for now), make sure to strafe on bigger mobs, stronger attacks have a churning animation on the enemy *glitter around their hands/feet/plain long animation* kinda like most of Blackrock dragon bosses/Naxx stuff had. Also make sure to update your gear every 10~ levels.
Make sure to use your heals early and often. I noticed at one point when I started playing that I’d save my heal skill for when I was nearly dead (25% health or so) even though it only healed me for about 33% of my health or w/e. Find out the number / general point where you won’t overheal, and make sure to use your heal as soon as you hit that so you can get your recharge up for a second heal as soon as possible.
You’ll learn the finer points of when to heal later in the game, but at the start, just remember to use that skill.
Edit: Andele. Why. Why you do this. Why you ninja me so hard. :c
It’s pretty obvious, and nobody’s impressed.
Update it every 5 levels. Especially when you’re above level 60.
Just don’t go for Rares/Exotics until you’re level 80.
I was in lvl 20 gear when i was 80…. And I still facerolled… not sure why people need gear in this game. Not that I would ever say this class is fine/competent/fun/even remotely finished.
On topic:
1. Strafe
2. Dodge
3. Learn to kite
4. Practice
In that order.
When you are lower level you just die a lot more as a necro…I can now take on non-AOE champs solo, or 10+ mobs solo. It is a matter of getting your bearings straight and learning the class’s weaknesses and strengths. Stick with it and you will have fun in PVE.
WvW is still a work in progress for the Necro IMO.

For just questing/levelling I feel like scepter/dagger and staff are ideal weapons because you can kite mobs pretty easily while melting them with conditions. Staff #3, Staff #5, Scepter #2, DS #2, DS #3 are all great for kiting and keeping them off of you.
For PvE I use only staff and DS with four pets up along with speed sigil (because let’s face it, normal speed OOC sux).

Be careful about corruption utility skills. They all inflict conditions on your character. If you don’t know how to manage those yet you are just helping the mob kill you. Also, get well of blood for your heal, instead of the blood fiend. I find by the time I want a heal the blood fiend has died. It’s one less thing to have to manage.
I recommend Consume Conditions over Well of Blood for your heal.
Don’t worry about anything yet. Just try to unlock the weapon skills and learn what they do. Other things will come eventually.
