Q:

Hi everyone,

First off I wanted to say that I am having a blast playing this game, with the one exception that I am going mad trying to pick a class to get to 80. I currently have 8 level 15+ characters but I can’t figure out which one to just sit down and play.

What I like/am looking for that I’ve seen so far from other professions.

1) Perma swiftness – My engineer, with just 10 trait points had perma swiftness which I used and cannot forget. The profession must have something close to perm swiftness which is amazing in pve and wvw. I love flying across open land at a blistering pace.

2) Ability to run Power/Crit builds – I really enjoy seeing big numbers instead of a bunch of small ones ( I know its the same overall damage, but still). So I’m looking for a profession that will favor Power/Crit Builds with the ability to also go Conditions. Flexibility to run both effectively is what I really desire (for variety over time.)

3) Range – I want a profession that can perform at 1200 range effectively. I know most professions have some long ranged weapon, but I get extremely frustrated in WvW if I don’t have great range abilities.

So, is the Necro capable of these 3 things and I just haven’t seen it? Or is there some other class out there that can offer me Perma Swiftness, ability to go power or condition, and have great 1200+ range abilities for WvW?

Thanks. I know this isn’t all about Necro’s, but there is no general PvE or Profession Forum.

1) Necro cannot do this.

2) You will have plenty of flexibility.

3) Staff is the only 1200 range weapon in the Necro’s arsenal. Scepter is 900, Axe is 600, Dagger is 130/600 MH, 900 OH.

For what you’re looking for I would recommend either engineer or elementalist. Either one can meet all your criteria.

You can actually manage perma swiftness with the warhorn and one particular utility skill but it requires a bit a mix of boon duration increase, warhorn cd decrease and spectral skill cd decrease.

Without any of this (just the warhorn + spectral walk or whatever it is called) you can manage around 50s of swiftness and need to wait 10-12s before being able to do it again.

It’s not my fault if S/P is not popular !!!

1. Necromancers can’t keep it on permanently, but we do have quite a few mobility skills, including teleportation (that also happens to cause explosions). We’re pretty nimble regardless, but if built for speed, we can really get going.
2. Power Axes. Ranged damage that, if micromanaged properly, leaves people wondering what happened to all that health they had a second ago. Not quite as godlike as, say, a rifle warrior, but it’s close, and we have a lot more utility. Also, necros can cause bleeding on critical hits, making them an awesome class to run Precision on.
3. Not only is our staff range 1200, but with a trait, we can also drop wells at 1200. Wells have an enormous AoE radius, so their actual effective range is quite a bit larger. This gives necromancers lots of opportunities for backline play, especially in WvW. Our wells are also excellent as combo fields, letting you put up a lot of damage and conditions very quickly.

I hope this answered some of your questions. If you’d like, I’d be happy to post some of the builds I mentioned, as well.
